The importance of language in the Abrahamic Religions.

Abrahamic religions descend from Abraham and believe that Abraham is their father in faith or a prophet (“Abrahamic Religions” 7). Religious language is the language that talks about God or gods. Religious written texts are the scriptures that religions hold with great significance in their beliefs and practice. This paper will explain the importance of languages and written texts in the Abrahamic religion and the differences and similarities in the way the texts and languages are used.

Religious texts provide purpose and meaning, hold religious purpose and meaning, create deeper connections with the divine, enhance the religious experience, guide communal and religious practices, and create a communal identity. They are considered the centre of religious traditions (Bayindir and Ustaoglu 284). Written religious texts consist of a compilation of mythologies, ritual practices, mythologies, spiritual aspirations, commandments, and ethical conduct.

Written texts are essential to individuals because they enable them to experience the teachings of the scriptures in their religious traditions first-hand. They offer inspiration to the individuals. Most scriptures have been made accessible to individuals through printing. Most religions, therefore, emphasize the importance of reading the scriptures. In the Islam religion, for example, the Quran is the centre of the beliefs and practices of Muslims (Bayindir and Ustaoglu 290). The memorizer, known as a hafiz, memorizes the whole Quran, which requires a lot of commitment.

Written texts are significant for community use. They are the base of their legal, social, and moral codes of conduct. They also guide rites of passage and rituals. For example, the Hadith and Quran are used as the base for Sharia laws in Islam. For Judaism, the Torah is used (Bayindir and Ustaoglu 298). These laws govern the proper conduct of the community, for example, how children, spouses, enemies, and the poor should be treated. In Christianity, we have the Bible that governs the way Christians should treat the creation of God and how they should live and carry o with their lives.

Religious language plays a significant role in guiding believers on how to pray, describe God, think, and interpret religious utterances. They create a sense of mystery through their metalinguistic and expressive nature (De Kadt 26). In Abrahamic religions, religious language protects the faiths from criticism. It enables plays the believers to understand the meaning of what is spoken about God and enables them to speak about God. It proves that these faiths are intelligible.

Religious language promotes and communicates religious discernment and commitment. Commitment is a type of attitude that focuses on the universe. It has a great intensity regarding personal relationships (De Kadt 26). On the other hand, discretion is recognizing a phenomenon of great importance. This recognition puts together the known and trains one to appreciate the world from a different perspective. Religious language plays the role of emphasizing the discernment that is associated with commitment.

Religious language also plays a role in helping believers morally by rebuking complacency and selfishness and conceptually by bringing in a broader perspective of the world. It employs innovations that challenge the metaphysical principles of believers, exposes them to a truth that creates a change in their lives and doesn’t leave them in possession of the power that they believe in having (De Kadt 27). This approach is used to understand God. They help believers be more open to understanding God without letting their selfish nature intrude on them.

Similarities and differences between the way religious texts and language are used in Abrahamic religions.

All Abrahamic religions use written texts and language to proclaim the nature and truths of God. They use religious language to protect themselves against criticisms from religious critiques (Albayrak et al. 286). Written texts are used to dictate the way of life of the three Abrahamic faiths. They form a base for the laws and rules that govern the lives of Muslims, Christians and Judaists. These texts create a form of identity for communities belonging to the various religions (Albayrak et al. 288). Religious language helps believers speak about God and understand what is spoken about God better. It creates a sense of commitment and discernment in the believers.

The differences in how the three religions use religious written texts and language are that Christians follow the teachings of the religious texts in the hope of gaining life after death. Therefore, Judaism does not have such teachings, and the believers don’t believe in reincarnation (Albayrak et al. 289). Christianity’s religious language and texts talk of the trinity, whereby God is in three different forms, while Islam and Judaism do not have such beliefs and teachings. On the other hand, Judaism written texts bring out teachings that emphasize the implementation of laws and following them. In contrast, Christianity, on the other hand, speaks more of acceptance and love. The other significant difference between the three Abrahamic religions is that they follow teachings from different written texts (Albayrak et al. 293). In Judaism, the prophetic revelation was from Moses; in Christianity, it was from Jesus Christ; and in Islam, it was from Mohammed (Albayrak et al. 294). The Authoritative secondary writings of Christian written texts were from Church Fathers and Ecumenical Councils, while Those from Islam are from Hadith.

Conclusion

Abrahamic faiths share a descendant, who is Abraham. Written texts and religious languages emphasize the truth about God. The believers use them to create a sense of possession and defend themselves against criticisms. The Abrahamic faiths share some similarities in using these religious texts and languages. They are all founded on the belief in God. They are used to govern the way the believers run their lives. There are also some notable differences in these writings and language. For example, Judaism emphasizes the implementation of laws, while Christians value acceptance and love.

The area of focus that I will be basing my interviews on is giving back to military families. As a family member of an active serving member in the military, I have always taken a keen interest in supporting the families of the military personnel and even the military veterans. The military families and the military members are the most significant examples of patriotism. They sacrifice a lot for the general good of the entire nation; therefore, offering assistance to the military community communicates the appreciation they so much deserve (Spears, 1998). To understand how best I can give back to the military community, I will be interviewing three professionals who can be instrumental in improving my understanding of the needs of military families. The three professionals are; an active military member, a behavioral health officer, and a family life counselor.

Interview with a military officer

Recent studies have shown that the deployment of their relatives impacts the family members of deployed military officers on military missions. It has been shown that there is a need to have corresponding interventions to support the family members. According to the officer, the military family includes the active members of the force, the veterans, survivors, and the caregivers. Some of these people may not be wearing the uniform, but they pay a lot of price for their links to the military. People continue to volunteer to serve in the military as a sign of honor, dignity, and patriotism associated with serving the country. However, as a military officer, one soon realizes there are a lot of challenges that they have to endure together with those close to them. As an active military member, the job comes with many challenges and risks. The risks involved are sometimes devastating to the families and the military personnel. The veterans also have a lot of challenges that may affect the community and the quality of life around them. Therefore, as military personnel who have seen the impacts and the challenges of the situation, his perspective help to understand mote the kind of support essential to the military family.

Interview with a behavioral health officer

Military jobs can be very stressful and have severe health impacts on the soldiers and their far-reaching families. From the viewpoint of a behavioral health officer, it is possible to have a deeper insight into the extent of the problem and how the healthcare and support system are handling the military personnel and related people who suffer from behavioral health conditions. When military member returns from deployment, they may find it very difficult to readjust to the civilian system. When the transaction from the military into private life becomes bumpy, many lives are affected. I was also able to find out the role of behavioral health care in the lives of military personnel, veterans, and people with links to the military. The interview shows that the impact on military service lives a significant portion of the military family members with behavioral health conditions.

Interview with a family life counselor

From the perspective of a family life counselor, I was able to find out that there has been increasing in the number of patients with military origins. One of the most common factors that cause trouble in families is the stress associated with the job. For instance, the family members of a military person have to tolerate changes of stations, sometimes even more than three times a year. The stressful situations in which they operate also affect their adjustment into family life, causing trouble in the families. The family life councilors work to help mend the cracks in the family and improve the quality of life for the affected families (Whelchel, 2015).

The professionals have allowed me to have a deeper understanding of the situation with military families. It has shown me that the military personnel and those with close relationships with them, like their family members, suffer many challenges. It is, therefore, necessary to offer any assistance to help alleviate the troubles they may phase. The interview has shown that the service needed by military families, need a multi-sectoral approach because it affects different categories of people within the population. It has been demonstrated that in an attempt to participate in community service, various sectors are working to achieve the same goal (Spears, 2010). Therefore, one should not only focus on a single industry but should look at the problem and possible solutions from any sector.

The interviews were essential for my vocational calling. As a spouse to a serving military officer, I have always had the motivation to give back to military families. Therefore, with the information I have collected from the interview, I will be better positioned to offer these families the right kind of services. I have also learned that a single sector of society cannot address military families’ challenges. For instance, the challenge could be regarding the health of a military peroneal, both physical and mental health; it could be the veterans who may be unable to find solutions for their challenges with their post-military life, among other challenges. Therefore I have more ground to cover, and the correct information supports mu motivation.

Considering the information I have acquired so far regarding my area of vocational calling, I can say that I have been able to grow in my field of interest. The interview has allowed me to have accounts of information from people who are already performing the duties I am interested in doing. They are already giving back to the families in a professional capacity. Therefore their position can only help guide and set a focus area for my vocational calling. I am now better informed and will be looking forward to offering services that seek to make the lives of military families more comfortable.
