Leadership and management Summary english essay help onlineLeadership and management
In the line of duty in the nursing job, we as nurses must work in the most conducive environment where we feel most comfortable, in any undertaking when the workers are comfortable with the conditions of work, they deliver to the best of their ability. Maximization of the output is the main aim in organizations and this same aspect applies in the nursing job, the people that work in this sector provide very vital services to people in the society and therefore need the best working environment (Labrague, et al 2020). When the nurses work in unfavorable conditions they may not deliver and at some point, may lead to high chances of nurses turn over. Nurses’ turnover is the frequency or the measurement of the number of times the nurses leave their jobs over a specific period. This may be yearly or even monthly. The cases of nurses’ turnover are those that do not happen voluntarily but are rather caused and driven by a certain issue. It may also refer to the number of times a given category of people or nurses leave a specific area in the nursing department and opt to venture into a different one.
Nurses’ turnover has got significant effects on the patients as well as the organizations. When there is a rampant level in the rate of nurses turnover then the service delivery will be as expected in the hospitals. The nurses in most cases act as the nearest families to the patients especially those that are admitted in the hospitals, they give them company and motivation to keep having a high spirit even in the worst conditions. When the patients get such kind of people beside them, it helps them get the hope of living to see another day when the nurses are not available due to nurses turnover rate, the patients do not get the proper attention, and this may lead to the stigma which may be very detrimental to the patients. An increase in the turnover rate also affects the stuffing of the organizations and when this happens it may take some time before the organization gets the best replacement for the gone nurse and this may also affect the patients as the relationship between a patient and a nurse is very important for the wellbeing of the patients. Finally, nurses’ turnover may interfere with the patients’ recovery process, this may happen when a patient has become comfortable with a specific nurse then the nurse leaves the hospital. This happens mostly in rehabilitation centers and may lead to serious relapses of the patient.
Professional standards are the set guidelines that are to be followed by a specific group of people or people in the same employment sector or profession that guide and state how they should undertake their duties. In nursing the main guideline is full commitment, in this case, the health provider is dedicated to deliver their services and the best care to the patients and to make the hospitals better places for both the professionals and the patients (Bonnice, 2019). When these standards are upheld and the nurses deliver the best of their abilities, then the rate of nurses’ turnover will be reduced to the minimum level. Also, the nurses need to be motivated by the employees as this will positively impact their service delivery and hence reduce the rate of turnover. It is also so that the patients and nurses have a good relationship as at some point the nurse can leave a job due to boredom in the line of duty, it is, therefore, necessary that the employers take into consideration the feeling of the nurses as it will help reduce turnover rate.
The leaders in the nursing department have got a vital role to play in this section to rectify the situation. The managers are rather known as the employees have the mandate to ensure that their employees are comfortable, and this can be done through; employment of many new nurses who will work hand in hand with the existing team. When there is a high number of nurses it will help reduce the amount of work that is done by an individual and this may act as an encouragement to the nurses and thereby reduce the rate of turnover. Also, the management team may decide to hold seminars for the nurses where they will be enlightened on how to carry out their duties and hence focus on their service areas. Finally, they may also consider awarding and recognizing the nurses that perform exceptionally well, this will make the nurses have the urge to do better thereby reducing the turnover rate as they aspire to be the best in their field of duty. The leaders in the various sectors also have the mandate to work hand in hand with the rest of the team as this will allow them to identify issues with the nurses before they become worse and push them to leave their jobs. The leaders should learn how to lead and not rule over the teams they have authority over.
In addition, the leaders may employ certain strategies to ensure that the turnover rate is reduced to the minimum. Some of the strategies include, working with the managers by acting as intermediaries between the nurses and the managers hence airing out the views of the nurses and the managers and this will create a good relationship between the two parties. The leaders can also be available always for the rest of the team such that they may find a person or people to report to in case of emergence issue, when the issues that affect the employees are handled and solved very fast it gives them the necessary confidence in the management team and this is a motivating factor that will help reduce nurses turnover rate.
The most applicable leadership strategy is the use of democratic leadership (Yarrow et al 2019). In this case, the leadership and the management team work together with the whole team without favor on any side, when this happens the whole team will feel comfortable as no one is neglected in the team. When this happens, the nurses will be able to work comfortably and cooperate hence this will reduce the nurses’ turnover rate, hence this is the most appropriate method.

Health information exchanges Discussion best essay helpdiscuss:
Health information exchanges were conceptualized as an information highway or a circulatory system for exchange of healthcare data. There has been a significant growth of health information exchanges since the Nationwide Health Information Network in the United States has been implemented. Common uses of health information exchanges are for public health initiatives, quality reporting, and shared information on high-risk populations. Health information exchanges ensure that each piece of health care information can be shared easily and is readily available for all. Health information exchanges are important in providing secure interchangeable health care information between doctors, hospitals, and patients. With the implementation of health information exchanges health care providers have been able to save time, provide appropriate care, and save lives by ensuring the most up-to-date patient health care information is readily available for all health care providers to utilize in the treatment and care or patients.

Study on Classical Social Theory need essay help: need essay helpIn this essay, I will demonstrate how the role of metaphysics and the state of nature greatly influenced Thomas Hobbess theory, and I will also analyse the different anti-positivist responses to his specific ideologies. Furthermore, I will construct a dialogue between Vico Giambattista and Thomas Hobbes.
First lets understand the term metaphysics is generally refers to the different branches of philosophy which are concerned with the first principles of the nature of existence or being knowing. Thus, these three branches, namely ontology, epistemology, and normative framework, implicitly entail different views on what constitutes being in the world, as well as differences in their conceptions of what the world should look like. Also, a metatheory is intended to organized theories so that they can be compared, and, subsequently, evaluated and judged. First of all, ontology examines the nature of all things that exist empirically, based on their categorization. An ontology, for instance, can make it possible to differentiate between different things in the world, such as the difference between rocks and humans, for instance. Second of all, epistemology involves both statements about diverse knowledges and statements about the production of knowledge itself. For example, what do you know to be absolutely true? why? Finally, the normative framework deals with questions regarding value, truth, and ethics. In this theory it focuses on analyzing things from the perspective of what we perceive they should be in our own personal judgments rather than analyzing them objectively as they truly are. The purpose of this paper is to focus on Thomas Hobbess work Leviathan as well as his ideas of metaphysics that are grounded in materialism, based on Hobbes assertion that humans are essentially machines that maintain themselves by working in order to maintain their basic functionality. As a result, Hobbes argues that every aspect of human nature can be accounted for in terms of materialistic ideologies.

Thomas Hobbes discusses in his work Leviathan, about the state of nature which he claims as being the idea that nature [] made men so equal in the faculties of body and mind (Hobbes, p.1). According to Hobbes, the state of nature refers to the state of men without civil society, or, more precisely, the state of men before civil society and becoming civilized. Consequently, Hobbes defines the natural state as the capacity for every individual to win to preserve himself, or indeed to seek any power that he can acquire. Furthermore, Hobbes also argues that no one is stronger than the other, either physically or mentally, as far as defending themselves from the threats posed by people who seek to preserve themselves by pursuing materialistic goods. Hobbess Leviathan was mainly influenced by this idea of the state of nature where it served as the main argument in support of his belief that humans are rational people who pursue their interests and fulfill their desires. Additionally, the state of nature provides a context for understanding how human being obtain their individual character outside the framework of a civilized and governed society. As part of his study of laws of nature in the state of nature, Hobbes argued extensively about the law of self-preservation. Furthermore, Hobbes shows in Leviathan that men are driven to obtain power in order to protect their lives. Due to the constant desire for power, men are forced into a state of war against themselves, where competition, diffidence, and glory constitute the three main factors that cause arguments and disagreements. As an example, Hobbes suggested that if two people desired the same thing, they would not be able to enjoy it together; they will, instead, become enemies.

Giambattista Vico was known to be one of the first anti-positivists who challenged the view of society based on its metaphysical understanding. Vico argued that things can be understood based on their first principles. He argued that in trying to do so, one flattens the meaning of the things they are seeking to understand and eliminates the messy aspect along with the diversity that exist within humanity. It was necessary for anti-positivists to discover something that would replace theology at the time, but which also celebrated humanity. Vico asserted that the only truth a person can be certain of is the one he or she has created for themselves. Therefor, humans are able to comprehend language and history, as they were the original creators of such concepts. Additionally, Vico continues to support his theory by sating that nature, which was nor created by humans, would therefore remain a mystery to humankind. Furthermore, anti-positivists held that history itself could be understood as being an oral transcription of primitive perceptions. Vico therefore was able to distinguish and understand a new form of historical difference related to cultural differences, differences in values, meanings, and terms as well as language differences. As a result, he determines that it is absolutely essential to analyze both the social and the historical worlds in a different manner than that of the natural world. In other words, focusing on the idea of self-understanding versus one based solely on observation. In contrast to Hobbes’s belief in metaphysical notions of things, Vico’s anti-positivist views assert that myths are having the purpose of telling the truth about certain types of societies, such as ancient Greek ones. This form of understanding is known as an etiological theory. Moreover, the use of mythologies by Vico was precisely what Hobbes tried to avoid with his ideologies. Human nature was seen by Hobbes as wicked, evil, and static, always intent on acquiring power. Vico saw it as non-static, with desires and aversions that are constantly fluctuating. Also, Vico strongly argued that humans have not created knowledge, but rather constructed it by means of historical development.

Conclusion: Although Thomas Hobbes’s whole argument in Leviathan is shaped by the state of the world and metaphysics, it is evident that the responses to his writings by anti-positivists, such as Vico, have attempted to alter beliefs in the present. Vicos response to Hobbes metaphysics beliefs was a way of trying to de-naturalize his ontology. As the positivists argued that we as human beings as naturally violent as creatures, seeking to obtain optimal power and preservation, the anti-positivists challenged such notion by arguing that with history, the understanding of different cultures, as oral representations, could provide insight on why humans act the way they do, or on the differences in cultures, values, meanings etc. Anti-positivists, for instance, might argue that humans are unlike objects in nature because they are capable of thinking and reflecting, therefore changing their behavior. Nonetheless, both Vico and Hobbes have provided valuable insights into the political, economic, and social conditions that constitute our current “society”.

Patient’s reluctance to complain history essay help
A great deal of past and recent healthcare concern has centered on the errors made in patient care or overall healthcare of people. Many suggest that the legalities of healthcare attempt to balance the expectations of society for healthcare and the mistakes of caregivers with thousands of successful events of exceptional care each year. Yet many cases of errors in care also often go unnoticed or unreported simply because a patient or family member is reluctant to complain about their or their loved one’s care for a variety of reasons. Why do you think patients are reluctant to complain about their care and what are some of the reasons for mistakes or errors in care? Discuss this in two different contexts: you as a patient, and your parent or child as a patient.

The smiling receptionist is giving validation of quality services. It helps form a positive first impression of the customers, and it’s an indication that the patients are welcomed in the Environment (Dahiya, 2020). Such an attitude is the driving factor behind customers’ satisfaction. Moreover, the receptionist’s attitude of offering assistance to the customers would result in a great customer experience, thus ultimately increasing customer loyalty. High customer loyalty is directly related to the number of frequent visits.
If the receptionist is constantly smiling and offering help to the patients, then it shows that she is highly attentive and responsive to her environment. Such kind of behavior is significant for strong analytical and decision-making skills. Resolving all types of issues for the customers in a wide array would enhance the problem identification skills of the receptionist that could ultimately strengthen her decision-making skills (Dahiya, 2020). Moreover, positive behavior could also positively impact her personality as she would learn to stay composed and ready for any situation. Overall, her performance would be positively affected with positive feedback from patients and doctors.

Moreover, she must have a high level of motivation to maintain positive behavior throughout the day. In other words, consistency is key to a positive workplace environment. Employees must have a set of skills to enhance their corporate image (Akhtar, 2020). However, the receptionist in the doctor’s clinic has an even bigger responsibility to ensure the satisfaction level of patients.

what kind of impact might the receptionist personality have on doctor’s patients?
For me it really is very important. Because it seem like every time I would go to doctor’s I would wand up in the hospital. So I’m so so nervous when I go to doctors it’s really comforting going in a seeing a smile on the receptionist face. And being there to calm us down and make me feel more relaxed, this really helps calm me down.
How might the receptionist personality and attitude affect their job performance and decision making skills?
It’s very important. One their making the patients relax and helping with all those patients to fill out all them papers for the doctor and information about our address and other important information. Attitude is key for any job not just receptionist but if they have a great attitude then just maybe it would make me relax so I won’t be so scared when I do see doctor. And personally if the receptionist has a great personality and attitude it would show she is a good attitude and her personality is caring and that is showing the patient’s and her employer she is very patient with the customer’s, and great at her job.
What else could the receptionist do help to improve the doctor’s office?
The receptionist can also call the patients to remind them of there appointments time and date. They can also keep the dictors office stay clean and comfortable for patients. She can really do the doctor’s bills and make sure payments are being paid. Set up there next appointments. And always have a great greeting for us the patient’s. The more we are relaxed the better it is for the doctor’s. The receptionist and the doctors see a lot of patients everyday, so if they are always respectful and patient it shows they really enjoy there jobs and it shows.

From the description of this particular receptionist it seems they are in the right field aligning good customer service as well as practicing good teamwork skills. When patients are entering a doctors office or hospital setting they already come with their own doubts or discomfort with having to check on their health issues. Positive energy upon arrival can help comfort patients although it may not relieve all the stress. One of the metrics that is recorded by the healthcare industry is patient satisfactory. According to an article from Healthcare News, When patients are satisfied with their experience it increases their likelihood to return to the facility. Research also indicates that when employees are engaged and satisfied with their work it correlates to higher patient satisfactory (Larson 2021).
The described receptionist seems to be outgoing and extroverted. Seeing that the receptionist is able to tend to the patients while also assisting other coworkers with some task shows that their personality allows for a high performance of work. Also one thing I take from being able to help other positions in a job shows a great deal of motivation and a greater understanding of the whole work process. With a better understanding of the work environment and flow, you can be better at delegating which task should be done first. Whether you should process all paperwork first or talk with patients on accommodations they might need.
As well as the positive attitude with both customers and coworkers, image is an important way to improve the doctors office. People like to be in a clean environment when taking care of health needs, professional receptionist image can help have positive affect on the company’s image. Being aware of the personnel will also help improve the overall service of a receptionist (Chron 2020). Most time if a receptionist is aware of who is at the office that day they will be able to better guide people to their designation.

Discussion on Communication styles easy essay helpCommunication styles always could build and sustain meaningful relationships, which is an essential part of achieving success in any area of life. The manager’s communication approach would have a detrimental influence on the rest of the team. A growing environment for distrust and misunderstanding will result from inadequate communication like such.
A lack of communication between management and employees or across teams can lead to dissatisfaction and anger at work (Chan & Lai, 2017). My devotion and dedication to the company might deteriorate if the manager does not have adequate communication channels. I will be dissatisfied with the workplace environment and seek employment elsewhere, causing the firm to suffer more work as replacements are hired.
The staff will feel more confident as a result of good communication. It moreover instills a feeling of connectedness, solidarity, and accountability in them (Jackson, 2019). Rather than dismissing communication as a motivator, the manager should begin to embrace the following techniques.
He should maintain the channels of communication open. A poor attitude can be caused by various factors, including a hostile work environment and rumors of ‘layoffs.’ He must notice and address these concerns if he does not want them to persist. This shows the workers that he is willing to communicate with them. As a consequence, they’ll feel much more comfortable approaching him when they have an issue.
The manager should keep them informed. Whenever you communicate successfully with the staff, you are not only boosting them in their judgment, but you are also establishing satisfaction. If there are important choices or adjustments inside the organization that will affect their employment, be honest and upfront with them. Let workers know well in advance if the business is being remodeled, and they may have to share workstations. In this manner, any concerns may be addressed before allocating office-mates. Do not deceive yourself. It will save your staff from seeing as though they’ve been caught off guard; that is a great place for them to lose confidence in you in the future (Osborne, & Hammoud, 2017).
Display an interest in issues and potential responses. It is a straightforward approach to demonstrate his dedication to resolving workers’ issues, making them feel appreciated. Returning to the office refurbishment, make sure you explain and acknowledge their concerns and how the changes will benefit the company. Maintaining a pleasant work environment requires communicating with your colleagues as well as being open at this time.
Provide regular feedback. Giving regular feedback would be another approach to boost engagement. For fear of their staff overreacting, nine out of ten bosses often avoid offering constructive criticism to company personnel.” As a result, just 29% of employees believe they “always” realize if their performance is on par with expectations. To tackle this problem, give regular feedback so that minor faults don’t become major ones. Workers will be more than delighted to pitch in and repair the situation if you do so. Once you have figured out how often your team wants feedback, please give it to them regularly.
Encourage team member participation. He should set up a time for his team to discuss and provide feedback. This implies that his communication strategy is consistent in terms of how and when these changes present themselves. Everyone will be ready to create ideas and engage in the debate in this manner (Zardasht et al., 2020). Employees, in most situations, desire to address problems since it allows them to feel heard

What impact would the manager’s communication style have on the team?
For being a manager, you need a lot of people skills. That means that you would have to be a great communicator to start off with. Then you would have to be a good example for the organization. But then you would have to be a good listener so that the other employees would have an impact on the others. That way they could become a great team like they should be. I believe that it is what it takes to be a great manager or a leader even thou they do not go together.
How would the managers communication style affect your own job satisfaction?
If there are some communication skills missing, then there then the whole leadership will have problems. If you have good skills, then you will go and get all these skills. I believe that if the manager had poor communication skills, then that would be a guessing game and it would not be a very good sight for any one everything would be in chaos because everything would be up in the air over everything. If the manager was not communicating very well then I do not think that the information will not come across the way it is supposed to and is being very misleading. So the work that is supposed to be done by today will not quite make it.
What kind of communication techniques could the manager use to be more inspiring leader?
The manager or managers could take a lot of training to begin with. Then they could pass it on to the employees so they will know what they are thinking as well as doing. Thank you for listening to me and thank you for reading my post.
2. Donald
The managers communication has a major impact on the teams performance and overall morale. It would set the tone of the workplace and ultimately the culture is created within the rules of its environment. If a manager has poor communication skills, then it is going to be hard for him or her to get to know their employees and vice versa. It is appreciated when someone has good communication skills because it is almost a form of respect in itself. You can be expecting someone to know something, or you can make sure they know it. A mangers communication skill would affect my job satisfaction, in ways I will work harder for people that I Know and have a relationship with. I currently have a manager that doesnt even know the first thing about what her employees do and it puts the employees in difficult situations because theres absolutely know avenue for communication everything is an order. It can be frustrating at times, but some people would rather not see their superiors, I would rather know who Im working for. Some communication techniques a manger can use to become more effective to his workers are to hold face to face meetings one on one and group meetings. Dont speak as a superior, their position already states their authority, create open door policies to encourage more voluntarily communication. Always be clear and substantive, reverify all information before telling employees to avoid confusion. A manager can also encourage criticism and let employees voice their opinions on the workplace and make sure they are heard. There are plenty of ways a manager can connect with their employees they just have to want to. A lot of managers have different goals and thats okay, but different personalities click with different people and can sometimes make or break a workplace.

Organizational behavior analysis english essay help: english essay helpOrganizational behavior analyzes the influence of social and environmental determinants on how individuals and teams function. The success of a company depends on people’s interaction, collaboration, and engagement. The efficiency and effectiveness of a company’s workforce are increased when organizational behavior is analyzed and understood. Organizational behavior also helps a company meet organizational and workplace culture objectives (Uhl-Bien, Piccolo, & Schermerhorn Jr, 2020). Given the values, culture, and goals of an organization and its workplace environment, employees react to distinctively different communication channels. People are likely to associate with coworkers and managers who have similar behavioral characteristics.
One of the critical advantages of organizational behavior appraisal is creating a suitable workplace environment for individuals. Many businesses have embraced a flattened, more typical structure after noticing this trend using organizational behavior modeling. It gives employees greater leeway in how they execute their tasks and with whom they engage (Kalwani & Mahesh, 2020). People like to work for organizations with a positive culture and a welcoming environment. They generally desire to work well with other workers and managers to realize the goals. Organizational culture also influences human resource methods and aids in resolving disputes. As a result, a profound grasp of organizational behavior can aid managers in the formation of much more productive teams and improve interaction with frontline employees.
Participating in the discussion board made me understand the importance of working in teams. Teamwork allows for a variety of viewpoints and insights. Suitable teamwork arrangements allow for a teams range of ideas, imagination, perspectives, possibilities, and problem-solving techniques. Members can discuss collaboratively in an atmosphere that supports teamwork, thus enhancing problem-solving more efficiently and decisively. Collaboration boosts efficiency and production (Asrori, & Tjalla, 2020). People become much more productive and efficient when they use collaborative tactics. Thats because it allows for the distribution of responsibilities, reduces personal stress, and ensures that work is done within a set period.
Discussion teamwork makes objectives more achievable, increases optimization, promotes job happiness and speeds up work. Learning possibilities abound when people work together. From the discussion, we learned from each others errors when we worked as a team. Working as a team helps people avoid mistakes in the future; they gain more perspective and acquire more ideas from their teammates. Synchronicity in teamwork is accomplished by group cohesion, common goals, collaboration, and motivation. People gain tremendous pride in success when they work together for the desired outcome, which motivates them.
Nothing is unclear because there is excellent communication both in live chats and during teamwork discussions. The school has provided a favorable environment and helpful learning strategies. Everything is fantastic the way it is now, and nothing could have yielded more additional useful information. Through communication, everyone can stay on the same page. Since the course commenced, I have learned many things, and I am eager to continue learning and gaining knowledge.

I definitely enjoyed the class you always learn something different but you don’t know that’s why we’re all going to college to learn knowledge is key in life.
What were the most compelling things that you learned about organizational behavior in the workplace? The fact that one of our discussion boards was about the receptionist that’s very interesting first person you see in a business is the receptionist or secretary the first impression just like when you meet people is very important. Show going through that experience with that class and researching that was very good along with the discussion board and how dealing with how everyone else in the class saw it and what they wrote or very good and compelling also I felt what was more important that we had a class on a business from Korea not the United States and yes travel broadens person’s mind and having did two tours in Korea I found that very compelling and interesting talkin about culture in structure an Asian people with their smile and laughter after everything that is said not knowing what people are thinking very compelling so here in America it’s not the same so learning and seeing that and taking me back was very compelling I enjoyed this class that was very good professor.
How did participating in the discussion help your understanding of working in teams. Is any thing still unclear that could be clarified? Reading everyone else’s discussion board always helps me give me a different perspective on how they solve the class and then structions of the professor and what he was looking for and how they prepare their discussion board in to read your research and have a different perspective this always is great and you’re right it’s like working as a team cuz you get to read their information they get to read yours and make a better discussion board and a paper for the class for everyone participation and understanding. No I’m clear I don’t need anything clarify I enjoyed the class.
What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information? I feel the music part of the class should be more in-depth and provide more information not only in this class but in all the classes that I have taken with Shih Tzu they should expand the Muse information just like the entire it should be more in-depth on what the professor is trying to get across in his class and provide additional information answers the professor already knows but he’s trying teachers so the Muse and the more on the intellipad should be in line with what the professor is trying to get across in his class.

I have always felt it takes an enormous amount of team work and organization to run a successful company no matter the size of the business. In our first discussion we talked about the receptionist and how their personality may impact everyone that has a stake in the company from the customers to the coworkers. Everyone could agree that, that is the type of teammate needed I saw how some classmates expressed rude attitudes was very off putting to their experience. Every player plays a role when it comes to keeping your morale up and productivity. I like how my classmate mentioned that a manager who is ineffective at managing a team it can cause the company or organization to lose capital whether it is money or human capital. I like to look at an organization as a machine that needs all of its parts well oiled to be able to smoothly maneuver through its time span. Learning how everyone has different motivations helps explain how hard it is to maintain a team. It takes an extremely skilled, people person to be able to put pieces in a way that can continue the success of a company as well as flow. It was mentioned how a pay raise can help motivate some employees compared to some who can use verbal feedback to help others stay motivated. Employee or member appreciation helps secure the organization. I would have liked to got more in depth about the different ways to keep motivation and innovation alive. Although it is case by case seeing different kinds of personalities such as introverts or extroverts ways of motivation would have been desirable for me. Overall Mr. Pahl did a great job of guiding discussions this semester. I liked how you completed a model to all the course work showing us great leadership.

Quality improvement in health care academic essay help: academic essay helpQuality improvement in health care is necessary to provide evidence-based care which is safe and effective to the population as it enables the organization to achieve its goals. To maintain a culture of safety, health care organizations use teams to collect and analyze data on areas of concern and develop a plan of action to improve those areas. (Helbig, 2018). An example of a continuous quality improvement that I can identify from my previous workplace is how to reduce surgical case cancellations by improving preoperative patient preparation practices. Inadequate preoperative patient preparation leading to cancellation of the surgery is a stressful experience to the patient and the family not forgetting the wastage of resources planned for the activity which is a loss to the organization. Cancellation of elective scheduled operations on the day of surgery leads to an inefficient use of operating room (OR) time and a waste of resources. It also causes inconvenience for patients and families. (Kaddoum, et al. 2016). Factors that lead to elective surgical cases being cancelled on the day of surgery include laboratory investigation values that are out of required range, not observing the starving period, poor communication on time of surgery, incomplete medical evaluation, or lack of financial clearance. Quality improvement strategy that can be applied to address the problem would be developing a standard operating procedure where the preoperative preparations for the patient are reviewed 24 hours before surgery and documentation of the communication to the patient, surgeon, anesthesia care provider and the OR manager is done before confirming the scheduling.

Uses and Misuses of Assessments a level english language essay help: a level english language essay helpINTRODUCTION TO ASSESSMENTS

Overview

Using assessments appropriately and effectively requires a basic understanding of:

Definition of the term assessment
Purposes for which assessments can be used
Validity and related concepts
Interpreting assessment results
Misuse of assessments
Ethical considerations

Each of these topics will be briefly reviewed below.

Definition

In this class, you will complete several different assessments to obtain feedback on your personality, temperament, behavioral preference or style, or other characteristics. Some writers differentiate among the terms personality, temperament, and character. For the purposes of this class, the distinctions are not important.

In addition, we will use the terms assessment, survey, questionnaire, and test interchangeably. In all cases, we will be referring to an instrument used to measure personality, temperament, behavioral preference, and/or other characteristics to help the test taker identify tendencies, strengths, talents, and/or development needs.

Purposes

Individuals and organizations use assessments for a variety of purposes, including (but not limited to):

Clinical/psychological counseling The assessments that we use in this class are focused on normal psychology and are not helpful for identifying or measuring psychological problems.

Employee selection Using any type of test, including a personality assessment, for employee selection requires that an organization comply with legal standards such as state and local laws as well as The Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures. In brief, an organization that uses a personality assessment or any other tool for selecting candidates must be prepared to:

Demonstrate that the assessment has no adverse impact. That is, research needs to have been completed looking at different demographic groups to determine whether certain groups perform on average better (as it relates to the organizations selection standards) on the assessment than other groups.
If adverse impact is found, the organization needs to be able to demonstrate that candidates who perform better on the assessment also perform better on the job. That is, the organization needs to prove that the assessment is a valid predictor of performance in the job for which the test is being used.

Forming teams or work groups Sometimes organizations will use assessments to form teams or to assign team members to specific project team roles. This can be useful. However, caution should be used. If an assessment is used to determine who has access to a professional opportunity of any kind, legally it is considered a selection procedure and must comply with legal guidelines (see above).

Career guidance Personality assessments can provide test takers with useful input when considering a career path. Typically, assessments that are used for career guidance provide feedback reports that give common career choices for people with similar characteristics. Of course, many people find rewarding careers in fields that dont seem to fit their personality profiles.

Team building When used appropriately, personality assessments can help teams work together more effectively. However, when peoples concerns about the process are not addressed or they are not coached on how to interpret and use the results, using assessments can be counterproductive.

Coaching Many executive coaches use assessments as part of a coaching and development process when working with individuals or groups. It is critical that the coach have a deep understanding of the tool being used, the constructs measured by the assessment, and how to interpret the results.

Self-development For this class, we will focus on using assessments to gain insight for self-development.

Validity and Related Concepts

There are literally hundreds (or, more likely, thousands) of published assessments that have been sold or made available for free over the years. Popular magazines often include assessments designed to predict everything from your best romantic match, to what kind of diet will work best for you, to the best way to motivate your child to do well in school.

Just because a personality instrument is published, however, doesnt mean that it is a good one or that it will actually predict anything of interest. Determining whether an assessment has value requires consideration of several factors:

The survey content

If the people taking the assessment dont understand the survey items, you cannot have any confidence in the assessment results. Similarly, instructions and rating scales need to be clearly written and easy to apply.

Another consideration related to the survey content is social desirability. Social desirability refers to a bias in which all or many people taking an assessment believe that others will view them more favorably if they answer a question(s) in a certain way regardless of whether that response is representative of how they actually are.

The reliability of the assessment

Test reliability refers to the stability of results over time and situations. For example, if you take an assessment and then take an alternate form of the same assessment and obtain the same results that would provide evidence that the assessment is reliable.

Similarly, if you took an assessment a year ago and took the same assessment again today, obtaining the same results, that process would provide evidence of test-retest reliability.

To the extent that your results changed, there would be evidence that the test was less than perfectly reliable. Most tests are not perfectly reliable. However, the better the assessment is, the more likely it is that on average most people will have very similar results upon retaking the assessment.

The validity of the tool for the purpose you intend to use it for

Using well-written test questions and instructions, minimizing social desirability, and creating reliable instruments are all important criteria for making valid predictions, but it is possible to have an instrument that meets those criteria, but is not valid.

For example, consider the following questionnaire:

What color are your eyes?
What is the name of the high school you went to?
What is your favorite movie of all time?

The questions in the sample assessment seem pretty clear. There may be some social desirability associated with Question B if some people think that it is better to have gone to a certain high school, but this would probably have little affect across large groups. Further, with the exception of a new movie coming out that some taking the assessment later deem to be their new favorite moving, assessment results should be pretty stable or reliable.

However, none of that means that the assessment is valid. Test validity refers to extent to which a test measures what it was designed to measure. So, if the intent of our 3-item survey was to gather individuals eye color, high school, and favorite movie, our survey is valid. If the intent was to predict how individuals will behave (or anything else), the survey is not valid.

Interpreting Results

During this class, you will complete and score a number of different self-assessments. Often you will find that the results are not shocking, but that they provide you with a slightly different perspective that will give you further insight into your tendencies, strengths, talents, and/or development needs.

Many assessments provide you with two levels of feedback. The first level focuses on your results at the dimension level. In some cases, you will receive both a label and a score. Usually, the higher the score is, the better the results will seem to fit. The second-level results focus on how those dimensions fit together to form an overall personality type. When interpreting your results, be sure to thoroughly understand the dimension-level results before focusing on the big picture.

Occasionally, you may find some aspect of your results to be surprising. When this occurs, keep in mind the following:

An assessment report is one data point. All the feedback tells you is that people who responded to the survey questions like you did tend to act in ways like those described in the profile.

Your results may not be accurate if you were, for example:

Tired
Ill
Distracted
In an unusually good or bad mood
Dealing with an unusual situation that is causing you to act differently from how you normally behave
Not clear about the rating scale
Confused about the meaning of some of the items
Not completely honest perhaps because you were uncomfortable stating that you act/feel a certain way (see discussion about social desirability above)
Not able to respond to all items.

Results are not all equally strong. For example, two people may have both been classified as extraverted, but may differ significantly in how extraverted they are. One of two may have received a very high score on extraversion and may feel that the feedback describes her well. The other person may have received a very low score on extraversion and feel that the feedback does not describe him well at all because he also displays many behaviors that are characteristic of introverts.

Misuse

Assessments can and often are misused. If you are reviewing your own assessment results, keep in mind the items mentioned above to avoid misinterpreting your results. In addition, some of the ways that assessments can be misused include:

Not following ethical guidelines (see next section).
Using assessments that are not valid or appropriate for the intended purpose.
Making broad assumptions about people or pigeon-holing them once you know their type or profile.
Assuming that because one (or even several) successful people in a particular role have been successful that that type is the best for that role.
Avoiding certain types because of the belief that they are bad, hard to deal with, etc.
Using type as an excuse (e.g., thats just the way I am and theres nothing I can do about it).

Ethical Considerations

Many assessment publishers provide comprehensive guidelines concerning the appropriate and ethical use of their tools. See, for example, guidelines related to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) by clicking on the link below:

Using personality assessments for development appropriately and ethically involves a number of steps, including:

Clearly communicate the purpose of the assessment and what assessees can expect from the process.
Answer assessees questions.
Provide assessees with good test taking conditions.
Remain non-judgmental about assessees results. Remember that for the kinds of assessments used in this class, there are no good or bad types.
Provide feedback on assessment results, including resources or guidance to help individuals understand their results.
Do not over interpret results. Assessment results provide information about tendencies. There are no absolutes.
Do not attempt to provide guidance that is beyond your capabilities. If you do not have a thorough understanding of the specific assessment and what it measures, you should not attempt to help others understand or use their results. Many assessment publishers require that those administering assessments to others be certified or meet strict educational requirements.

Conclusion

Most of the tools that we will be using in this class, are designed to measure defined personality constructs or an underlying theory of personality. Although all the tools have enjoyed some popularity, they vary in terms of how much research has been done to provide evidence of their reliability and validity as well as the results of those studies. All assessments can be used inappropriately, so understanding both the assessment and what it measures is critical to making effective use of your results.
