Journal Article Critique: The Importance of Students’ Motivation for Their Academic Achievement
This article is a critique on a study by Steinmayr et al., on the role that motivation plays in a student’s academic achievements. It is inspired by the notion that motivation fuels how one approaches tasks and consequently their outcomes, and its influence from different constructs such as task values. The incoming sections will provide a detailed summary of the article with regards to the methodology and findings of the research to explore the efficacy of its contents. It will also present a critical analysis addressing different factors such as the author, strengths, weaknesses and limitations, before presenting a summary.
The authors used a mixed study design to answer their questions regarding the role that domain specific factors have on students’ grades. They applied both qualitative and quantitative approaches in data collection and analysis, with a portion of the tests being administered being questionnaires and others containing numerical based information. The sample size used was 345 participants from two schools in Germany which had the highest reported academic track. The data collected was analyzed through statistical analysis, with the researchers using relative weight analysis to predict the academic performance of the students. The analysis was performed in three distinct steps, with each stage being developed according to the three models used, with varying applications of the motivation variables. For each of the three steps, the researchers tested for how much the relative weight factors differed from each other, providing insight into motivational construct was most important in predicting academic achievements (Steinmayr et al., 2019).
In their study, the researchers found that in the three domains of general, math and German, from all the motivational factor predictors, the students’ capabilities of self concept and prior grades presented the strongest relationship with grades. Also, that excluding performance-avoidance objectives, the other motivational constructs showed significant association with school grades. Specifically, most of the respective correlations were evenly dispersed around a moderate effect size of r=0.30 (Steinmayr et al., 2019). Even when other factors such as intelligence and prior grades were considered, students’ ability for self-concept resulted in the highest degree of variation. The research found that when the variables were analyzed at similar degrees of specificity, the achievement incentives for hope of succeeding and fear of failing were in second and third place. This is regarding the importance of motivational factors on predicting academic results. Tasks and learning goals explained variation in math and German while in some exceptions the ability to self-concept explained less than 5%.
The authors of the research article are credible in research and publication, having conducted other studies in the subject, with Steinmayr and Weidinger co-authoring an article with other authors on Academic achievements. Furthermore, they are all practicing professionals in the field of psychology, affiliated with the departments in TU Dortmund University, Philipps-Universität & Heidelberg University in Germany. Consequently, they were not only capable of designing and conducting a study of that magnitude but doing so effectively. The main logic of the article was that different motivational factors such as ability self-concept, task values, goal orientation, achievement motives and intelligence could be used to predict grades. The assertions made by the authors were valid, supported by not only the results of their study but also previous related ones such as Muhammad et al., in 2014.
There were various strengths that came from using a mixed methodology such as the ability to mitigate the limitations that using either design in isolation would present. Furthermore, the approach enabled the researchers to present stronger support for their arguments and findings in addition to being able to achieve outcomes that were more granular. The theoretical portion of the study was comprehensive and provided the reader with strong bases for the arguments and peer reviewed secondary sources to support them. The use of three different models enabled the study to analyze the relative differences in each motivational factor, a new approach with better results. However, there were certain weaknesses associated with the mixed method approach, such as the design being complicated to successfully implement.
Furthermore, the approach often requires significant resources and skills to not only collect the information but also analyze it. The data was both qualitative and quantitative which would have warranted the skills to effectively interpret both in both time, money, and personnel. The size and design further added to the costs and time spent. Furthermore, there were few available studies that targeted motivational factors in a similar way which hindered the researchers from deriving specific hypotheses on their relative importance. There were certain limitations that the researchers and therefore study faced, such as the range of motivation constructs being limited. It also limited the focus to linear relationships between motivation and achievement, only using grades as an indicator of academic achievement and the limited population of only 11th and 12th graders.
This article provides important insights into how intangible factors such as motivational elements affect the results generated by students in learning institutions. It is an important addition to the existing and currently limited body of work which tends to focus more on extrinsic factors of motivation. The results that such research presents could be used to support larger studies across different regions, to determine the veracity of preliminary claims. Furthermore, they could serve as statistical based evidence for development of strategies used to help students improve their academic performance that complement existing approaches. This critique asserts that the research is not only relevant but also correct in its findings.

Harry Hartfield was looking over some recent travel brochures while consulting his recent Google search. Retirement is only 5 days away and he could not wait to see the Fiji Islands. He and his wife thought they would start with a restful break before they started their travels in earnest. Harry is the head aero engineer at Global Delivery Direct and has been in charge of purchasing the planes and maintenance for the last 15 years after being an employee with GDD 25 years before. Harry had worked up in the company to his current position and has seen a lot of initiatives come and go when it came to eco-friendly flying machines. In the last four weeks, Harry has been breaking in his replacement, Imogine Farthing, who is coming from their London branch. Harry likes Imogine and thinks that she will do well. However, she is keen to purchase the new Boeing 777 cargo plane. She thinks it will go a long way to improving their fuel consumption and air emissions in the long-run between Chicago and Singapore. The cost of the new plane is 3 times more than the Lockheed which Harry thinks will save fuel costs over the old cargo plane they are using now but will not have the same air pollutant emission reduction. While Harry thinks air pollution an important concern for GDD, he also knows that in the past these controls often make the cost of the plan high and the fuel consumption lower than the company predicts. Imogine does not agree. Harry knows it will be her call but wishes he could access old reports he made when he was making a similar decision earlier in his career. With that information as a base with updated figures, he may be able to persuade Imogine to change her mind. During his retirement party, Harry decides to tell Rockfish about this point in the hopes that he may know how to locate the reports. Harry thought it was worth the try. Rockfish said he would look into it but wasn’t sure what he could do.
Oddly after his encounter with Harry at the party, Rockfish began a short conversation with one of his sales managers, Amid Jordan. Jordan had been with the company for only three years and Rockfish was shocked to hear that he was leaving. Amid said that he sorry to have to go but he was offered a job in Orlando with UPS, one of GDD’s biggest competitors. In fact, UPS had been poaching many of his managers lately and he was concerned about proprietary information and good talent leaving the company. How could he stop people from leaving the company and taking their knowledge with them and he wondered about the reasons for their departures.
Harry’s retirement party was beginning to be depressing Rockfish thought not festive. The feeling was brought home when Harry began a conversation with a visiting shipping department head from their Asian branch. It turned out that she was here to try to rectify a major glitch in the process used to get letter packages to Malaysia. They found out that the problem was in the driver pick up times here in the states. The Asian branch has been asking that the time difference be adjusted for by three hours rather than the 1 hour as it currently was set. It needed to be fixed because he had a lot of unhappy customers with claims of late packages to deal with on his arrival home.
Rockfish began to think about the fact that all these stories were dealing with knowledge and its usefulness to the company. This point is one he has been hearing a lot about recently from Jane and now he is concerned about the issues brought to light from his discussions with Harry and Amid. Rockfish approaches Jane and says, “Okay I think you are right about your idea of setting knowledge management processes in place, but you will have to explain it to the Board of Directors. They need to see how it creates strategic value for the company before they will buy into the plan.”
