As the shift progresses, the nurses of the PICU need to interact not only with each other, but also with other members of the medical center staff. Barriers to creating the most effective team are created not only by the skill levels, experience, and interpersonal dynamics within the team, but also by external conditions, like time and workload pressures.

Anna Jiang greets Christina Robledo, a respiratory therapist at SAMC, who is treating Maud, a young heart surgery patient.

Anna Jiang, RN-Pediatric Nurse: Hi there, Christina … I didn’t know you were working today.

Christina Robledo, Respiratory Therapist: Oh, yeah… they’ve got me hopping, that’s for sure.

Faith Olson, Nurse Manager: Christina … it looks like Maud’s blood gases aren’t what they need to be. I think we should call her doctor and make some adjustments.

Anna: Still, what harm is there in talking to the attending and making sure we’re on top of things?

Christina Robledo suggests some strategies that she, as a respiratory therapist, would like nurses to implement.

Christina: Excuse me… I notice that the beds here aren’t elevated between 30 and 45%. That’s an important part of the VAP bundle.

Anna: I didn’t see any mention of that in Maud’s orders.

Christina: I don’t know if all the doctors are putting it in patients’ charts, but we’re trying to make sure we follow the protocol. It has a really big effect on reducing pneumonia rates.

Anna: I’ve read about it, but I wasn’t aware that we’d decided to implement it here.

Christina: Well, I know they’re talking about making it policy, but until they do, I’ve just been trying to educate nurses about how to implement it. You nurses are the ones who do most of the items on the checklist, so I figure if I can teach nurses to start doing these things, we’ll already be there when the hospital administration puts it in place.

Faith: I think it makes more sense to get the policy in place, get people trained in how to implement it, and then move forward that way.

Anna: I agree. We can’t be implementing protocols at this level. There’s a way to do these things.

Christina: We’re talking about things like elevating the patient’s bed to greater than 30%, providing good oral care, and making sure you’re washing your hands. They’re easy enough to implement and they make a difference to the patients’ health.

Faith: I’m not arguing with you. It’s just that these things need to go through the right channels.

The team’s performance is directly impacted by the ability of members of a team to collaborate and communicate. In the first scene, Anna and Faith were attempting to collaborate with Christina regarding the care of a patient; however, Christina viewed their concerns as an attack on her personal ability to provide proper care for the patient. Christina’s emotional intelligence is playing a significant role in the care of their patient because she is unwilling to collaborate with the team.

In the second interaction between Christina and the nurses, there is a disagreement regarding bed elevation to help prevent pneumonia. Christina states, “Oh… because we can’t have nurses taking orders from a lowly RT? Whatever… do what you’re gonna do. It’s only pneumonia we’re trying to prevent.”
Christina’s comment indicates she feels the nurses are again ignoring her concerns or questioning her abilities. How could the nurses have handled this situation differently to minimize the conflict and make Christina feel like her contributions were valued?

Communication skills are an important part of managing team conflict. All caregivers have a common goal: high quality patient care. Instead of disregarding Christina’s contribution, the nurses could have been more receptive to discussing the matter with the attending physician or administrators, to inquire about the new protocols. Instead of simply disregarding Christina’s concerns, they could have stated that they needed to follow the current protocol; however, they would bring Christina’s suggestions forward to see if they can be implemented faster.

Conclusion

Under stress, health care providers can keep working together efficiently and well by paying attention to whether their responses to co-workers are emotionally intelligent. How could the providers in this activity have been more emotionally intelligent in their responses to each other?

Civil rights liberties is a term used to define the activities that have been carried out toward the attainment of equal rights. This was mainly pioneered by the black people in the United States. There was a lot of unfairness and oppression being orchestrated by the white people against the minority. This started in the early 20th century when there were intense levels of slavery. Over time, the black people started getting increasingly aggressive towards fighting for their rights and achieving equality. They took to the streets to express their stand and get support from the government and international agencies. Several landmark rulings were made in their favor to create a better environment for black people.

Summary of the case

Brown v. Board of Education is one of the rulings that have positively influenced the lives of black people in the United States. This case is known as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (NA, 2016). The ruling was made in 1954 and stated that racial segregation in public learning institutions violated the fourteenth amendment (NA, 2016). The court continued to break down the ruling, pointing out that the lack of equal opportunities and separate educational facilities for black and white people was an unfair act. One of the major challenges of the unfairness is that it allows the younger generation to normalize racism from an early age. Thus, it might be hard for the country to eventually be able to achieve equality in all its avenues (Wilson, 2015). This law was effective in nullifying the separate but equal rule, which had taken effect in the country for a long time. In this case, all the learners in the country would be accorded equal learning opportunities regardless of their age.

In the 1940s, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People started to put in effort towards ensuring that black people would have the same education opportunities. Essentially, this era was eh height of oppression and racism, as laws such as ” separate but equal” had been implemented. This law was implemented in a bid to ensure that black people would not use the same social amenities as white. Ideally, it stamped the superiority context, a major aspect of the division of the country’s citizens. The organization encouraged black parents to enroll their children in all-white schools. Oliver Brown is one of the parents that was denied the opportunity based on racism. Thus, the NAACP filed a lawsuit on behalf of the parent, stating that the equality of education in the all-black schools was relative of lower quality.

Case Outline

Name of the case: Brown v. Board of Education

Facts of the case: black students in the country were denied access to all-white schools. This was in a bid to reinforce the equal but separate rule. This rule ensured that the black people would have the same social amenities as the white, but they had to be different. In an attempt to normalize equality, the NAACP encouraged black parents to seek opportunities in all-white schools. Oliver Brown is one of the many parents that did not get access (López & Burciaga, 2014). This created the basis for the lawsuit, as the union wanted to ensure that the black children would get equal treatment as the white. The court consolidated a lot of the cases that were filed due to school-based segregation to come up with a ruling.

Legal action: the court stated that the “equal but separate” law violated the fourteenth amendment, which stated that one would not be deprived of his rights based on race. In simple terms, this amendment was made to ensure that there would be equal protection of laws for all the citizens of the country. The court stated that forcing the children to attend separate schools would create a sense of inferiority among them. The ruling was made as a general case, hence no legal action was taken.

Decisions or holdings; the court made a ruling for the plaintiff, stating that black children should not be exempted from accessing better learning opportunities. Ideally, the schools for black children usually had fewer amenities and resources (López & Burciaga, 2014). This is an aspect that would highly affect the quality of education that the children would obtain. For this reason, the court decided that the separate but equal rule violated the law on equality. All the citizens in the United States deserved to have access to the same utilities. Additionally, their rights and freedoms should not be limited by a lack of equality.

Verdict: the verdict for this case was based on an opinion made by chief justice Earl Warren, who was later joined by other justices (Wilson, 2015). He first started by analyzing the fourteenth amendment to establish if anything was stated regarding public education. He later dissected all the factors surrounding the education setup before making the verdict.

In conclusion, this ruling played a major role in protecting the rights and interests of children all over the country. It allowed the students to gain equal education and eventually led to the closing down of black-only institutions. This ruling not only influenced the quality of education but was also part of the effective plans toward the end of racism in the country

OFFICIANT: Today is a celebration. A celebration of love, of commitment, of friendship, of family, and of two people who are in it for forever.

You don’t have to have a ceremony to have a marriage. And when you think about it, the whole thing is kind of weird, right? You’re standing on a stage, looking fancy, holding flowers, and being stared at by a bunch of people that have crossed into your life one way or another.. So why do we do it? The marriage ceremony has been an important feature across nearly every culture, religion, generation, and society. We have thousands of important moments that happen throughout our lives, but this one is regarded as one so critical, we acknowledge its special status by sharing it with others. Why this moment?

Because despite all of our differences, love is what we all share. It’s the great unifier — our one universal truth. That no matter who we are, where we’ve come from, what we believe, we know this one thing: love is what we’re doing right. That’s why you both are standing here. That’s why you all are here to watch them stand up here. We have all loved in our lifetimes, and in this moment, we’re reminded that the ability to love is the very best part of our humanity

All of us here today have our own love stories. Some are short, others long. Some are yet unwritten, while others are just getting to the good part. There are chapters in all of our stories that are sad or disappointing — and others that are exciting and full of adventure.

Unity ceremony 

To celebrate their union, Steven and Holly have chosen to stain a Welsh love spoon, which was hand carved for them by a friend of Holly’s grandmothers in honor of Holly’s Welsh heritage. A love spoon is a decoratively carved  wooden spoon that dates back to the 17th century that was traditionally presented as a gift of romantic intent. There is also a history of “marriage spoons” where on the wedding day a bridegroom carries or wears a spoon. The spoon is normally decorated with symbols of love with the embedded designs all holding a different meaning. 

This spoon is based on one of the love spoons collected by Holly’s Grandmother. 

This spoon is a double spoon, which represents the union of two joined together. 

The heart represents that my heart belongs to you, or in this case, their hearts belong to each other. 

The link represents many aspects of the bond between them. It represents that they are inseparable, their love can not be broken, their destinies lie together. 

They have added their own details to the spoon and incorporated a compass on the top to guide them through their journey through life together. 

Wedding vows 

OFFICIANT: You fell in love by chance, but you’re here today because you’re making a choice. You both are choosing each other. You’ve chosen to be with someone who enhances you, who makes you think, makes you smile, and makes every day brighter.

You’re about to make promises to each other that you intend to keep. You’re going to vow to take care of each other, to stand up for one another, and find happiness in the other.
