The Benefits of Social Media

The rapid evolution of technology in the past two decades has made social media play a central role in the lives of the youth. There are both negative and positive attributes of social media. National representatives show that 95% of adolescents aged thirteen to eighteen can access smartphones, 88% have access to desktops or laptops at their homes (Jiang 2018). These platforms have presented many challenges to the youth, parents, health care providers and policymakers. This media has provided many benefits and opportunities to the youth.

Potential benefits

Social media has created platforms for promoting adolescent mental health in the sense of humor, entertainment, exploring their identity, and creative expression (Jiang 2018). They can stay connected with their peers and family members on day to day basis.  The public creates possibility to establish new connection online which provides opportunities to get online social support mostly those who cannot get communities of similar peers. For example, youth have online friends and they identify these friends as an important source of emotional support (Nesi & Prenstein 2015).  Promotion of adolescent mental health has gone a notch higher to include healthy care application on screening, treatment and prevention (Moreno et al. 2016 ).  On screening, prior work has shown potential feasibility of reviewing social media pages for any signs of depression or substance abuse (Moreno et al. 2016).  The immediate accessibility and potential scale of social media offers possibilities for youth mental health treatment including population that are hard to reach.

Self searching takes place online as well as off-line, the youth use these platforms for self presentation in the way they deem fit like posting pictures and sharing part of their lives. They also use social media to control how people perceive them this can help them to discover and understand themselves. They can practice their skills related to identity development like how to present oneself and self-disclosure (Hillier & Harrison 2007). Social medial is beneficial to youth with reading difficulties or struggling with sexual identity. They are able to find like youth with same challenges and be able to share their experiences thus boosting their confidence.

In conclusion, in past twenty years social media has been central part of the youth bringing both challenges and opportunities. Body of research has identified social media experiences that lead to mental health. They should identify how social media help identity development.  They should identify the best age to start using social media and what to restrict.

The boy in the striped pajamas is a movie about an eight-year-old boy named Bruno. During World War II, Bruno and his family had to relocate to reside near a camp where his father had been promoted to be the commandant.  Lonely and unhappy, Bruno wandered behind their new house and saw a camp with prisoners wearing prison clothes, which Bruno referred to as striped pajamas. He walked along the fence surrounding the camp and met a Jewish boy named Shmuel on the other side of the fence. After chatting with Shmuel, Bruno noticed they were age mates and became good allies. Bruno would sneak out frequently to play, chat, and give Shmuel food. Shmuel told Bruno about his family and that his father was missing. Bruno decided to sneak to the camp to help his friend Shmuel find his father. Shmuel brought a set of prison clothes to Bruno; he wore the clothes, left his other clothes outside the barbed wire, and went into the camp. As they searched for Shmuel’s father in the camp, they were taken along with other prisoners in a gas chamber. Bruno was never seen again, but his clothes were found. Bruno’s mother went back to their home in Berlin, and his father, full of guilt, agreed to be taken as a prisoner.

In reference to Gildersleeve et al., the movie deals with ignorance, ethnic discrimination, sympathy, and true friendship. Ignorance is portrayed whereby German civilians were aware that Jewish people were being afflicted, forced to migrate, deported, and killed. Germans were given possession of the belongings and properties of the Jewish. Ethnic discrimination was portrayed in the situation where only Jewish people were brutally murdered and afflicted, and German civilians were spared and even profited from the Jewish belongings. Bruno was sympathetic with Shmuel, for he had been separated from his mother and mistreated. He would sneak out food for Shmuel and even kept him company across the fence, showing a sense of true friendship. Although Bruno and Shmuel were of different ethnic groups and were separated by a barbed wire, Bruno and Shmuel remained very good friends. When Shmuel’s father disappeared, Bruno went as far as sneaking to the camp to help Shmuel search for his father when he was aware of the consequences of his actions. Even after being taken to the gas chamber where they were to be killed, Bruno still stood by his friend (Gildersleeve et al., 31).

I chose this particular movie because it deals with racism’s a social issue in our daily lives. The barbed wire fence surrounding the Jewish camp and separated Bruno and Shmuel metaphorically symbolizes people’s separation according to their social groups and races. According to the movie, the Jewish people living in the camp did not get enough food and water, and their living conditions were poor. They were also killed for being of a different heritage from the Germans. In the life we are living today, racism has influenced the lives of a lot of people. Job opportunities are fewer to people considered inferior and from different races, and even when they get the chance, they are underpaid. The theme of friendship portrayed in this movie was more reason for me to choose it. Shmuel and Bruno were best friends, regardless of their difference in their social status and religion. Their friendship was based on each other’s well-being (Gray, 127). Germans were not supposed to be friends with the Jewish, but still, that did not stop the two young boys from caring for each other to the point of even when they were going t be killed, they remained loyal to each other. The boy in the striped pajamas movie teaches us that social status should never hinder people’s friendship but rather help each other grow together without discrimination.

According to Rich et al., the message from the boy with the striped pajamas movie is we are all more the same and equal than we are different. Bruno and Shmuel being of the same gender and sharing birthdays symbolized equality. The friendship between Bruno, the Nazi’s son, and the Jewish boy named Shmuel, which was built under each other well-being and going against the set rules, brings out the truth that division is through personal impulse or random choice, not through set rules or any other reason. The movie also reveals that people use their power to justify the wrongdoings carried out against other people. Bruno’s father is the commandant who made sure the concentration camp was operational. In this camp, the Jewish were afflicted, and others were even brutally murdered. The Jewish living conditions in the camp were poor and lacked food and water, hence growing thin. Bruno’s family justifies their involvement in the Nazi’s authorities by saying that life is more of duties than choices, whereas they were accountable for the Jewish’s mass deaths. Bruno’s family felt the real cruelty of the gas chambers when their son died in the chambers. The message of interpersonal compassion is also conveyed. It further advocates that mistake of one generation should not be carried forward to the next generation. Children’s innocence might discourage them from discriminating and being harsh towards each other, but these characteristics cannot rescue them from cruel practices that others impose on them. Shmuel and Bruno were innocent, but Bruno’s parents were responsible for the mistreatment and discrimination of Shmuel and his family (Rich et al., 297).

Gray asserts that Bruno’s parents protected him from the brutal reality of the war but failed to monitor his movements, and that led to the start of his friendship with a prisoner and which at the end led to his death. The innocent character of Bruno was influential in the movie to facilitate the catastrophic ending. Bruno’s parents failed to tell him what his father’s job was all about or what was happening in the camp. He ignored the difference related to Jewish and Germans. To him, curiosity and loneliness were enough reasons to start a friendship, which made him not realize his parents’ discriminative nature towards the Jewish. However, there were some unrealistic events and infectiveness in the plot since all children who came into the camp was considered no use and killed, but Shmuel was in the camp. Assuming that Shmuel had been chosen for a medical experiment, then he would not have the chance to stay idle and in the outskirts of the camp most of the days because they stayed in the examination camps and the fence was heavily guarded (Gray, 121).

Racism was realistically represented in the movie, where only the Jewish people were mistreated. The issue of innocence and friendship was also realistically portrayed where Shmuel and Bruno were friends, and they had no clue that Bruno’s father was responsible for Shmuel’s misfortune (Rich et al., 2007). Racism and innocent friendship occur in the society we are living in today. The boy in the striped pajamas is of social importance. We live in a world where people have different social standards, which should not be a reason enough to mistreat them. Regardless of the difference, we are all equal, and we should treat everyone the same. Being compassionate is another social theme in the movie, and it is of great importance in that every person we meet is fighting battles that we know nothing about. Being kind and caring for each other can help us deal with all the problems we go through and eventually conquer them.

In conclusion, despite our capacity to weigh ourselves to others, we are no different from each other. We are all equal, regardless of our social statuses, races, or ethnic groups. The only thing that makes us different is what is on the outside, like what we wear, what we possess, or our body sizes, but inside we are all the same. What goes around, comes around. We can mistreat people, but there’s no guarantee the same thing will not happen to us at a certain point in our lives. Bruno’s family afflicted Shmuel and his family, and the same tragedy occurred to Bruno, who was the son of the commandant in charge of the camp. Even his father’s position during the regime did not protect him from being murdered just like the other prisoners. Ignorance can give us a sense of happiness and be dangerous at the same time. Not until we become conscious of our ignorance can the illusion end. In human nature, we make mistakes because we are not perfect, and these mistakes play a crucial role in our human lives. This movie helps us understand how these mistakes can negatively impact our lives, whether small or big. These mistakes can be carried forward to the next generation, regardless of their innocence.  Unless we are aware of our mistakes early enough, learn a lesson, and avoid repetition, their effects will always be adverse.
