Technology and Media

Online communication: linking technology, identity, and culture I Andrew F. Wood,

Matthew J. Smith. – 2nd ed

The internet connects a system of global addresses. It uses a transmission protocol that allows private and public transmission of information. As the internet continued to evolve, features that made online communication easy were developed. Smart mobs were established in 2002. They are networks that use media, which is sophisticated so that users can interact with their environment better. Smart mobs gave mobility for wireless technology. It was a great form of evolution for online communication that shapes the behavior of human beings.

The internet displays several characteristics that make it suitable for online communication. According to Morris and Ogan, the internet is a form of mass medium. Users can access many mediums that help them access and use what they need, for example, the use of email and the World Wide Web. Although the internet is seen as a channel of study, it is also a medium of education. Scholars are continuously looking into ways of how communication happens online. They want to understand how information is shared between users and the relationship between public and private information. Additionally, the internet has qualities that distinguish it from other forms of communication. These are packet switching, multimedia, interactivity, hypertextuality, and synchronicity.

When it comes to ownership, no one can claim to own the internet. In 2000, British Telecommunications PLC (BT) wanted to patent some features of the internet like Hyperlinks. The move was not as successful as the internet is a network of networks, and no single element can operate effectively in isolation. The unsuccessful attempt to patent means that internet users can have an easier time browsing without additional costs incurred.

Tech Tally: Approaches to Assessing Technological Literacy (2006)

Chapter: 2 Defining Technological Literacy

When it comes to technology, most people associate it with computers. Technology, however, is more than that. It is in medicine, business, agriculture, and any innovation that aims at making our life more comfortable. For humans to thrive and flourish, the connection between the social world, the natural world, and the designed world is essential. In the natural world, little modifications or interference can be made. The social world has norms and cultures that guide on co-existence. The designed world is where conscious creations are made suitable for a specific purpose. It is at the heart of the developed world that technology sits.

For a more fundamental understanding of technology, a well-defined system of naming is essential. Taxonomy in technology makes it easy to name and easily categorize inventions in technology. Medical technology is associated with any diagnostic design that makes treatment and prevention of diseases easier. Transportation technology is the innovation of systems and processes that cause the movement of people and places easier. Technology can, therefore, be seen as a way in which human beings improve the world to match their needs. The designed world aids this process by providing elements and artifacts for this process.

Technology literacy is a basic understanding of technology. An individual can be termed as technologically literate when they understand the dynamics of technology in everyday life, appreciated the history of technology and its genesis. A tech-literate person should also understand how technology shapes the social world. Critical thinking is essential when thinking about technology. It helps one to ask pertinent questions regarding the benefits and risks involved in technology. A critical thinker in technology can participate when appropriate and informed decisions about technology are made.

Specific skills are crucial when it comes to assessing technological skills in an individual. Hands-on crafts, such as operating basic technical appliances, are vital. These skills include the ability to surf on the internet and using Ms. Word applications. Basic technological literacy should consist of the ability to solve mechanical as well as technical problems in home appliances. A technologically literate person needs to design processes that aim at solving technological problems. If such a venture is unsuccessful, the person should look up solutions regarding the technical difficulties from a variety of sources.

Examining the Blog-Media Relationship

Mark Tremayne

The impact of the blog on the media cannot be underestimated. Over time, bloggers have created content that resulted in conversations around the world. Activists rally and propose their cases on blogs, which lead to media attention then mass action. As the internet has continued to evolve, the rate at which information is spread through the online platform increased. Bloggers use a feature known as a filter to bring to light some issues and ignore others. Bloggers generally filter content to do with technology and politics as they generate a lot of interest. In the 1990s, the Clinton and Lewinsky scandal was blogged until it became a worldwide trending topic. The case gave birth to online journalism. Another event that resulted in media influence through blogging is the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The blogosphere is a network shared amongst bloggers ideal for research. In this network, information shared is archived, and therefore it can be traced to the first blogger who shared about it. Within this network, bloggers have explicit rights to share links with content. The interface is unique because the rate at which it is evolving is faster compared to other systems. As the world of bloggers continues to grow, mainstream media perceives them as a threat. As opposed to mainstream media, the blogger’s platform is cheap and easily accessible, therefore attracts many online users. Advertisers find them more affordable to the market since they command a significant part of their audience.

Generally, bloggers create traffic of people by linking their blogs with other bloggers. When they get enough readerships, search engines rank them among the top. When online users try to obtain information regarding a particular topic, some of the high rated blogs will appear. This is how the bloggers command a broad audience. The resultant effect of this is creating followers and content for their readers. The influence generated by the bloggers makes them set trends on the media. Bloggers like creating a controversy that will surely capture the attention of readers. The downfall of Senator Trent Johnson in 2004 is such an example. After creating a debate and comments from the public, such a story made it to the mainstream media.

The information that is available in public is vital in shaping narratives and because that is what makes sense to people. Search engines are becoming popular as opposed to libraries and other reading resources. Although search engines are critical in providing information, their role and function can, at times, be misleading and misinforming. Search engines generally are not for retrieving data, but instead, search engines are for advertising and marketing. Therefore, this feature of search engines can be used to propagate oppression and promote vices.

The algorithm for search engines must be coded to give users the information that they are looking for rather than auto predict what the search engine thinks the user wants to know. The algorithm should be changed so that accessing information will not be turned to become commercial and influence the outcome of the user.  When search engines become commercialized, they promote a narrative of information that is not necessarily true. Such algorithms that filter information to fit what is trending are detrimental to society and the world of academia. Some of those algorithms are responsible for promoting bias and inequality across the globe.

Teenage Pregnancy and Adverse Birth Outcome in Canada history assignment example: history assignment example

Teenage Pregnancy and Adverse Birth Outcome in Canada

Conclusion

The primary goals and objectives of performing this particular experiment were to determine the incidence of low birth weight, preterm birth, and stillbirth infants among adolescent pregnant women when compared to adult women. Our findings once combining all of the Canadian data shows a 25% increased risk of low birth weight in teenage women, an 8% increased risk of preterm birth, and a 20% increased risk of stillbirth in adolescent women compared to adult women.

Preterm births refer to infants born before the actual maturity dates by adolescent women. Increased effects of preterm births have critically elevated the rates of low birth weight infants among infants. Aside from low birth weight infants, stillbirths are another problem where infants die before they are delivered. Studies by Callaghan et al. (2016) estimated that about 66.7% of infant deaths in Canada occur among the infants who are born preterm. Preterm is a biological term that is often used to describe the babies who are delivered before 37, which is the regular maturity date (Goldenber et al., 2012). However, Callaghan et al. (2016) further noted that among the two-third rates of infant deaths, about 17% solely die due to the health effects that are associated with preterm births. According to Callaghan et al. (2016), about 97% of the infant deaths that occurred for those who were born at <32 weeks of gestation, had less than 1500g of weight, making less weight a vital cause of death in Canada. Although the study did not include the rates of stillbirth among the population of preterm births, it outstandingly indicated that approximately 66% died strictly within the timeframe of 24hours after delivery. For this reason, it can be concluded that preterm birth is among the critical leading causes of infant deaths in Canada (Anderson & Smith, 2015).

According to Lisonkova et al. (2012), about 30% of completeU.S infant births were preterm. Among this population, the study confirmed that 8% of them were stillbirths, while about 10% died within a period of fewer than twenty days from the dates of delivery. Conventionally, Lisonkova et al. (2012) postulated that besides the increasing rates of stillbirths by the year 2012, neonatal death rates were steadily rising as well. Neonatal deaths and stillbirths are two closely used words that more or less vary in meaning, based on the timing of infant deaths. Ravelli et al. (2011) defined stillbirth as infants who die between 20 weeks of conceiving pregnancy and time of delivery, whereas the neonatal period is when a child dies in the first four weeks of life.

However, Bronstein et al. (2018) tried to evaluate the reasons for the increased rate of preterm in the U.S and Canada than other nations across the world. Accordingly, Bronstein et al. (2018) found that the rates of low birth weight infants in Canada and U.S were 15% and 23% respectively; and 8% and 26% of preterm births in Canada and U.S. Finally, the study concluded that Canada and U.S had 11% and 19% rates of stillbirths; and 35% of neonatal births in both countries. Consequently, the most detrimental causes of these trends were discovered to be increased infection rates of obesity, heart disorders, and poor health status (Lawn et al., 2019). Twells et al. (2014) found that rates of obesity in Canada and the USA were 24.3% and 36.2%. Joffres et al. (2013) also depicted that about 3% and 8% of total adolescent pregnant women in Canada and the U.S suffered from heart-related infections, respectively. In a nutshell, the high rates of these health impacts in the US than Canada explain why the level of preterm and stillbirth is slightly higher in the U.S than in Canada (Kirk et al., 2010).

Besides, reports by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention organization in Canada stated that low socioeconomic status and high rates of substance use among adolescent women were also contributing towards the high rates of teenage pregnancies and associated challenges such as preterm births, stillbirths, neonatal births, and low birth weight infants. Wong et al. (2014) stated that substance use among teenage pregnant women in Canada is 23% among the 300 women studied in various maternity healthcare institutions. Wong et al. (2014) further derived that out of the sampled 1000 adolescent pregnant women in Canada, 8% were alcohol addicts, and 4% of the population were also smoking. CDC Works 24/7 (2020) found that out of the sampled adolescent pregnant women, two-thirds came from low socioeconomic status.

The current literal data about teenage pregnancies and adverse birth outcomes in Canada and the U.S shows a smaller extent of the relationship with the already existing data. Perhaps, most of the past meta-analysis done by most researchers were general and were done for the large population of the U.S. However; there is more likely that future researchers will find it more comfortable to perform a meta-analysis on this research topic because current research studies engage both the U.S and other states or nations like Canada (CDC Works 24/7, 2020).

Meanwhile, the vital strength of this study is that comprehensive data is provided during the analysis, which shows some percentage of relationship with the present updated data, regardless of its lower rate. Therefore, any further research will be carried out using the available data, a fact that proves how important the information was. This is regardless of the fact that less research was done on nations like Canada in the past; thus, the process of collecting accurate information was quite cumbersome.

Nevertheless, the fundamental weaknesses of this research study are that it did not include several variables that are vital for drawing conclusions and recommendations in an attempt to solve the problem of teenage pregnancies and related adverse birth outcomes. For instance, although the analysis shown above indicates that stillbirth rates may seem to be lower in some nations, neonatal death rates have increased in the past two decades. Moreover, the study failed to explain the reasons for the figures obtained. However, the current data outlines that increased preterm, stillbirth, neonatal, and low birth weight infants are a result of high rates of obesity and heart diseases in both the U.S and Canada.

Conclusively, these weaknesses denote that further research should be done in the future to ensure that all the identified variables are utilized, and accurate data collected for use in analyzing the problem and suggestion of liable solutions. Also, more data is currently available; thus, future research is more likely to use the same in interrogating the challenge of teenage pregnancies amongst the adolescent women in Canada and the U.SA.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  DBA focus Management & Leadership history assignment help

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  DBA focus Management & Leadership

When trying to advise organizations on leadership, I realize that many professionals view my military experience as irrelevant and useless.  Even when I disclose that I graduated from a litany of professional leadership academies, taught leadership at several military schools and two major universities, and received accolades for leading, both in and out of combat, my affiliation with the Army destroys my creditability.  I even became certified Six Sigma (Lean and Green Belt), Project Management, and completed an MBA to offer familiar credentials, but people were still apprehensive of my military experience.  Somehow people only equate military leadership with combat and crisis and fail to understand that these leaders are trained in a highly organized and developed system that continually educates members at all levels.  I believe that obtaining a Doctoral in Business Administration from Temple University’s Fox School of Business will enable me to translate lessons learned from the military and recalibrate the skills and concepts for leadership development for the private sector.

Leadership is a process of influencing people through purpose, direction, and motivation to complete a project.  Organizations require leaders to align professional attributes, capabilities, and behaviors as effective agents for their teams.  Because organizations intend to thrive on predictive and dependable outcomes, leadership training is engineered to cooperate with the strategic focus and goals.

In the private sector, the barrier for leadership trainers is low, and many of the experts have never experienced being a leader but are used to train organizations.  Unproven and ineffective training concepts have accompanied the practice of using inexperienced leaders for training.  Recent trends reflect the results of poor training, which are partly responsible for lagging leadership skills witnessed in all aspects of society, including politics, sports, education, and business.

The networks, resources, and mentorship of professors like Theodore Hill, John Deckop, Daniel Goldberg will greatly enhance my ability to create effective tools that can be employed by any organization.  As a 21-year veteran of the US Army, and leadership coach, I believe that my expertise will be enhanced through the academic rigor and practical demands offered in the Doctoral of Business Administration at Fox Business School.  My experience as a leader enabled me to achieve unusual high successes, unique challenges, and keen observations.  When I joined the Army, I enlisted in a culture of leadership that helped develop technical and tactical skills but also helped me overcome difficult people.  My first assignment was a hostile work environment as my immediate supervisor was a racist.  No matter what I did, he disapproved of my actions and existence.  My supervisor painted me as unfit for the military, but I always completed high-level work.  Consequently, I was moved to another company, where I became the best soldier among my peers.  While in my new unit, I won the division marksmanship competition, received the highest technical scores, and was selected to attend the US Army’s Ranger and Airborne schools.  Through my career, I was recognized as a sterling leader with induction into the US Army’s elite Audie Murphy Club, awarded as a top instructor, leader, and strategist in combat, teacher of future officers in the Temple University ROTC department, and entrepreneur.  The experience prepared me to become a thoughtful leader, as I acquired an appreciation for team member hardships, self-confidence, psychological safety, and growth.  Because I learned to transform my negative experiences into positive lessons, I was able to better lead and teach employees, students, and clients.

Pursuing a doctoral degree will help me research, explain, and expand leadership development acumen and become uniquely qualified to train individuals, teams, and organizations.  My intended area of focus is leadership development by incorporating training, performance, and assessment criteria into intense experiential sessions utilized to train entire organizations.  Additionally, I would like to concentrate on identifying key attributes, competencies, and behaviors that contribute to successful interactions between leaders and team members.  A secondary area of focus is the financial benefits of properly developing leaders and teams.  A lack of effective leadership can generate enormous financial losses that are rarely defined in an organization’s bottom line.  Companies are losing money through employee lawsuits, labor disputes, lack of regulatory compliance, employee retention, and many other areas that can be controlled and supervised.  Developing leaders that become stewards of standards, fairness, and performance enable an organization to enjoy a trajectory of sustained strategic growth.

I am extremely motivated to become part of the DBA program at the Fox School of Business because I believe that I can make a difference in this time of cultural and political turmoil.  As a Black Man who has led diverse individuals in successful teams serving our country in the military, I believe my contribution can be valuable for minority leaders and those leading minorities.  My ultimate goal is to encourage leaders to serve team members with integrity, positivity, respect, and fearless leadership.

plans to balance the time commitment required of the program with your other demands. art history essay help: art history essay help

Please describe your plans to balance the time commitment required of the program with your other demands.

My time commitment toward the DBA program is essential to my own business.  As an independent leadership coach, I am constantly doing research and evaluating training systems to stay abreast of trends and new research.  The project I have selected, Leadership Development, is an attempt to dive deeper into topics surrounding the development process and organizational success.  I am a father of 4 adult children, and my youngest adult, Anthony, is a sophomore enrolled at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.  The time commitment, work, and availability to focus on the DBA program will be my primary mission.

Being an independent contractor allows me to determine all meetings, projects, and products.  At the present time, my business has changed as e-learning has become popular for organizations with remote workers.  Although I only have one formal class online, Leadership Fundamentals, it requires replying to students, updating and creating material, and managing the e-learning portal.  However, the management of the e-learning platform is simple with the LMS technology on the company website.   More three courses are being developed, but managing the platform will not interrupt the progress of my academic work.  In many respects, I will be able to validate my research in the DBA program with clients, partners, and organizations through e-learning.

I intend to spend a lot of time on campus to conduct surveys, interviews, and opinions on my topic.  Also, Temple University’s athletic programs provide a fertile ground to extend my research on experiential training and assessments.  With the university’s permission, I would like to collaborate with various groups on campus to explore techniques that better prepare college students as future leaders.  Because my company’s leadership philosophy is rooted in the concepts taught by the US Army, I will be able to partner with the Temple University Army ROTC program to research and test.  Another advantage of being connected to ROTC is to offer community volunteer hours as leadership facilitators on future projects.  Partnering with the Athletic Department and the Army ROTC is possible because, as a former Temple University ROTC instructor, I was responsible for coordinating training events for cadets to include working with the Athletic Department.

As a disabled veteran, I will receive support from Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation department.  Upon acceptance into the DBA program, I must inform my counselor of the scope of work, department contacts, and schedule.  The VA counselor will become my advocate and advisor to ensure I stay on track with my goal and manage projects appropriately.   Not only does the VA advocate for my education, but they also provide opportunities to collaborate with government agencies for research, projects, and small business contracts.

The DBA experience will enhance my academic acumen, advance my personal business, publish research, and generate opportunities to teach.  Investing time, effort, and commitment to doctoral research will not be a problem as the program will dictate my schedule.

The Automated External Defibrillator: Key Link in the Chain of Survival world history essay help

The Automated External Defibrillator: Key Link in the Chain of Survival

Link: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/circ.102.suppl_1-60

An automated external defibrillator is an electronic machine that diagnoses severe cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia automatically. The portable device can treat such conditions through the application of electricity, which re-establishes an effective rhythm of the heart.

As a community health activist, I find it necessary to place AEDs among the trained personnel in the community. Many other societies in other countries have begun equipping security personnel, police officers, traffic marshals, firefighters, lifeguards, and any other society member willing to undergo the training with the portable devices. Notably, it is essential to equip families with patients suffering from various cardiac conditions with portable devices. Doctors state that the actions the first responders conduct in the initial minutes after a patient suffers from cardiac arrest are crucial in determining the survival of such a patient. Within the community, the average response time of the emergency times may not support the survival of such a cardiac arrest patient. The community would benefit immensely if the AEDs were locally available, especially within five minutes after a patient suffers from cardiac arrest. Besides, physicians have noted an increased survival rate in communities with early defibrillation programs even though many of those communities do not have out-of-hospital ACLS services. Many rural areas in the United States, such as Iowa, King County, and Southeastern Minnesota, have witnessed increased survival rates ranging from seven percent to fifty percent.

Secondly, I am a part of a group agitating for the inclusion of AED use as a basic life support skills. The CPR and the consequent equipping of society members with crucial CPR skills is one of the communal health developments. Similarly, the proper use of AED could match the results that the community witnessed after the adoption of CPR concerning saving lives. Though the AEDs are computerized and sophisticated devices, they are easy to use and very reliable. The main of the group agitating for mass education on AED use believes that the community should become the ultimate coronary care unit in line with the government’s efforts in advancing community health.

The inclusion of the AED uses a basic life support skill that will create the third link in the chain of survival, with the first two being early access to life support procedures and early CPR. The history of the AED use dates back to the experimental and clinical studies of Diack and colleagues. In the ensuing decades, many companies have developed their versions of the AEDs. Currently, some of the institutions that have adopted the use of AEDs in the United States include police stations, firefighter stations, and emergency medical services. The adoption of the AED use within a home setting is still a challenging frontier due to the lack of appropriate training. My friends and I are advising state governments to consider offering free training on the use of the AEDs to any willing member of society.
