As COVID-19 has indelibly changed how we all interact on a daily basis with each other, it has also created a segment of the population that embraces activities that are engaging the desire to exercise in a safe environment. We have particularly identified three sports and exercise activities within our industry and expertise whose activities use equipment that corresponds precisely towards developing this new market.
Situational Analysis
The three project proposals were conceived to produce the following strategic objectives:
Increase revenues annually, over the next five-year period, by 10% annually.
During the next five years reduce operational expenses by an average of 3% annually.
Ensure that the project deliverables have minimal environmental impacts whenever feasible.
Align benefits for the local community with strategic objectives.
There are several anticipated risks that apply equally to each of the proposals that are made in this emergent opportunity development case. First, in all new product development projects, the primary risks include demand for the product and competition, as these are inherent in any industry where sales drive revenue. This makes effective planning, marketing, costing, and timely consumer delivery critical to increasing the odds of successful market penetration on sustainable sales growth. Several measures will be discussed that will apply to the specific project proposals as they will require some different criteria to evaluate each, but some basic tools will be employed across each as basic indicators of delivery milestones and analytic cautions when altering tactics when challenges to the original project proposals plan become evident.

Option 1. Golf Wearables: GPS Watch Production
The first project candidate is golf watch R&D and production. Golf is an ideal sport and leisure during the COVID-19 pandemic for it being a contactless activity. The sport is currently played by more than 25 million Americans, which is approximately 7.5% of the United States population (American Heart Association, 2020). Furthermore, despite the pandemic, the number of golf rounds played in the United States had a 25% increase in July 2020 when compared to the same month in 2019 (National Golf Foundation 2020). It is predicted that we will observe a steady rate of increase in the number of golfers worldwide; providing an entry-level golf wearable device to the market is expected to bring significant revenue to the company.
A marketable golf watch should have the following capabilities: basic watch functions, Global Positioning System (GPS), simple fitness tracking sensors, connection to Bluetooth/WiFi, a screen size no less than 1-inch, long-lasting batteries, user-friendly interface, and accompanying mobile apps. The most recent golf watches currently available today also have smartwatch capabilities; however, our company will not be competing against other companies flagship watches. The project would be focused on introducing a line of cheap, affordable, and entry-level golf watches to the market to minimize production cost and to target entry-level golfers. We anticipate that this project will increase our annual revenue by 10% for the next five years. The R&D and operational costs per device manufactured are projected to be $100 and $50, respectively.
Although the wearable device concerned with our project would not be as powerful as other companies products, many constraints and dependencies still remain due to high levels of technologies and complicated regulations associated with GPS, software, and wireless functions. Our choice of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is the United States GPS, which utilizes L1 1.575.42 MHz frequency. The downside of using this system is its precision deviation up to 5 meters (Rainham, Krewski, McDowell, Sawada, & Liekens, 2008) and the companys lack of knowledge in building a wireless GPS receiver. Therefore, it is recommended that Lavender Sports Group establish a partnership with a wireless communication company during the research and development phase. Another concern for the project is the companys limited software engineering capabilities. This issue can be easily resolved by acquiring a software development team specialized in mobile applications.
Another potential risk is poor product viability. The electronics market tends to have very dynamic consumer demands due to frequent updates in technology, designs, and regulations. It is consumers beliefs and current trend that a wearable device will have an upgraded version every two years, thus R&D and manufacturing cost will remain as variables.
 
Option 2. Home Gym Training System Production Exercising at home has become more and more popular due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the variety of fitness equipment available for individual and family use. The Lavender home fitness equipment fits the need and creates a homework-out routine that fits into your schedule. With a home gym, you plan your exercise routine into your program rather than trying to manage your schedule around getting to the gym. Having your home gym gives you the freedom to train when you want to work out, whether it’s when the kids are off to sleep, during your favorite television program, or bright and early before the rest of the family is awake. The Lavender home exercise equipment provides a different variety of health and wellness benefits and creates a chance to make fitness a family affair.
The fitness equipment market worth an estimated $ 12 billion in 2019, and it is expected to grow an average of 4 percent each year till 2026. The industry is an ever-changing landscape and thriving as one of the worlds largest and fastest-growing industries. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic currently affecting fitness clubs, the market is expecting a surge in-home fitness equipment in the coming year, and a diversion from the fitness centers. Also, a rise in obesity has seen the demand for fitness equipment increase over the years. To establish a successful launch of the Lavender home exercise equipment, we estimate the sales price of each home fitness equipment to cost $2,500. And we anticipate 1 million Lavender home equipment to be sold, which will generate a revenue of $2.5 billion in the year of launching and after that, an estimated 15 percent increase in sales. The R&D cost for each home fitness equipment is $800, while the operational and administrative expense is $400, which brings the estimated total cost for each home equipment to be $1,400.
The Lavender home fitness equipment is a smart work-out machine that provides blood pressure and heart rate monitoring features for its user and gives a body max index chart that aligns with the age and physical strengths of the user. This machine keeps a record of every progress made by the users for analysis and helps the user set a goal. The ultimate goal of the Lavender home fitness equipment is to allow users to monitor their health, such as; weight loss, heart strength, and improve joint flexibility.
 
Option 3. Entry Level Tennis Racquet Line
The last option submitted for development is a line of entry-level tennis racquets. The sport has been identified as an emerging market because of its natural disposition toward social distancing. The global tennis racquet market size was valued at USD 351.8 million in 2018 (Grand, 2020). Further growth from now until 2025 was projected at 12% with the largest concentration of sales (51%) occurring here in America. These figures reflect studies conducted before COVID-19 had begun to change the sports inductees landscape. With the inception of this pandemic and the naturally social distance confirmation of the sport, a significantly larger market share within the industry are likely. For example, the data obtained from Tennis Australias online court booking system indicates, Tennis Clubs across WA have experienced unprecedented growth in court bookings, with comparative data showing the growth of more than 140% across the 21 West Australian Book-a-Court venues for the month of May (Jones, 2020). And, here in the U.S. Aaron Mullennix is the director of tennis at Charlotte City Tennis, and says he’s been getting calls from experienced and rookie players (creating a) spike in popularity amid COVID-19 (Jones, 2020). Our proposed construction for the racquet would be carbon fiber. In general tennis, racquets are largely constructed using this material, As of 2018, carbon fiber held the largest share of 79.3% in terms of revenue. This product has gained significant popularity among consumers due to its lightweight property. Carbon composites allow managing the distribution of weight around the racket more accurately. (Grand, 2020)
One of the leading deterrents those new to the sport is the average price of a racquet. The range starts at around $50.00 for a low end fully carbon fiber model to $350.00 for the most advanced frame models. There are advantages to introducing a new line of carbon-fiber racquets to compete in the marketplace now because 1) the technology is well known enough that replication of the existing technologies is much simpler than when they were introduced back in the early 1990s (High-Tech 2004), 2) the material required to produce is readily available in manufacturing, and 3) the basic design and manufacturing process are also well known, employing techniques already used by Lavender sports in our carbon-fiber fishing poles, skateboards, and aftermarket bicycle parts. The risks in this option are more related to marketing, as competition abounds. However, by employing a targeted marketing campaign aimed at sports that are likely to have new consumers who are looking for budget-conscious options, we believe we can build a consumer base in the entry-level market with an eventual target to grow with them as they improve into more advanced racquet options. Creating customer loyalty with racquets has proven to be a solid technique, as brand loyalty in the tennis apparel and equipment industry tends to be high.
Additionally, the risk may also be considered in the project delivery timeline, such as designing, producing, advertising and market release schedules need to be designed to gain market segments as soon as possible in an effort to leverage as many entry-level consumers as possible while the sports trend in growth continues.
Recommendations/Evaluation
The Home Gym System is the most viable option for the company to pursue; the product scored the highest in all the categories that were essential in the companys strategic goals. The initial team will include a production and design team of two individuals, one project manager and a project accountant. The main role of these individuals is to create a plan for a successful product through proper research and development.
The success of the product will be measured by the number of Home Gyms sold as well as the overall contribution of the product to the companys profit margin. The appropriate mitigation of risks associated with the production, marketing, and financing will also heavily influence the success of the product. These risks will be monitored through frequent updates as the project progresses.

Simplified Scoring Model
Lavender Sports Group looked at three options to add on to the companys portfolio of products to contribute to the companys strategic goals. Our simplified scoring model is based on the current business market, financial success, and the overall fit into the business portfolio. The final weighted score was determined by weighing four different categories to measure which product fits into the company, then the project with the highest score was selected. The Home Gym system scored the highest in Return Of Investment (ROI), Company Fit, and Revenue. COVID-19 Self-Testing Stations
 
Introduction
A worldwide pandemic of respiratory illness called Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted several businesses around the world. Many are left unmanaged, and are going out of business, leaving the community without jobs. While many businesses have been forced to shut down permanently, New World Innovations, Inc. has developed a way to get our business back up and running, bringing employees back to work while functioning within pandemic compliance.
We will install an automated COVID-19 self-testing station outside of our business entrance. This project is an environmentally friendly way to reduce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and waste. The project will utilize cost effective measures to test employees for signs and symptoms of the virus such as a fever, before they enter their building by eliminating the need to employ specific staff for screening. Additionally, implementation of this testing station will decrease the use of cleaning supplies. This will help with budget needs as cleaning supplies are in limited supply and the cost of them have increased. The implementation of the testing station will also reduce person to person contact by automating the testing process. Ensuring public and employee safety is a priority, so keeping these stations outside keeps a safe social distance and the virus out of the building.

Business Needs
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the closing of our office building for three months. Based upon recommendations of reopening guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we decided to screen for the virus potential of anyone who enters our building (Resuming Business, 2020). This includes a screening of body temperature to make sure no one with a fever enters the building. At the present, we are employing staff to stand at the entrance of the building and, using a thermometer scan gun, take the temperature of the person who wants to enter. This involves not only personnel cost and the related disposable PPE they use such as face masks and gloves, but this method also puts that employee at risk each time they screen the entrant. In a desire to reduce overall cost of COVID-19 prevention, to reduce the environmental impact of the disposable PPE used by screeners, and implement contactless screening, we propose building and installing a self-directed screening station at the entrance of the building. We have the technology, qualified staff and facilities to build this fairly quickly onsite. The station will include an automatic temperature reading. If the user does not have a fever, the word Approved will print out on a slip of paper, accompanied by a picture of the users face, and time and date the temperature was taken. They will show their approval paper to a receptionist who is sitting behind the recently installed protective glass. Persons without this paper will not be allowed to enter the building. The paper used is made from recycled products and the paper itself will then be recycled, reducing our carbon footprint in the process. This contactless screening station will allow us to comply with CDC recommendations for prevention of disease spread, while protecting our employees and maintain our commitment to being environmentally friendly. Using our own building as a test site, a successful implementation may in turn lead to a new business line of providing such stations to other businesses.
Analysis of Situation
As the world continues to battle with COVID-19, changes need to be made to ensure that returning to work and daily living is safe. The current method of using people to test employees who enter the building is costly and increases contact between people. The goal of this project is to adopt a new method of automated Coronavirus symptom testing for employees to return to work and reduce the contact with individuals who may be positive for the disease. Objectives for this project include implementing an efficient and effective technology to test employees for COVID-19 symptoms on a daily basis and accurately identify associates with a possible positive diagnosis. Another objective is to reduce the environmental waste of PPE being used by the testers by 90 percent. Reducing human error by automating the testing can also prevent associates with COVID-19 symptoms from entering the workspace and increasing chances of spread of infection.
The organization needs to be able to create an increased budget for the energy bill as the automated system will use electricity from the building to function. There will also need to be a backup plan in the case the electricity goes out rendering the testing machines in-operable. There will be a learning curve for employees as they learn how to use the machine properly so as to lead to accurate results.
There are few risks associated with this project. One known risk is the possibility of unreliable results allowing associates who possibly have COVID-19 into the building and potentially infecting other employees. Although there are not many, the risks of this project are magnified as the potential failure could lead to a greater societal impact and should be taken very seriously. If this project fails, the company could risk their reputation as there may be a rapid spread of the disease in the community due to the failure of testing for COVID-19 in this project.
Decision criteria that will be used to assess courses of action include criteria that is required, desired, and optional (Project Management Institute, 2017, p. 31). The required criteria is the technology and equipment being used must be reliable, effective, and efficient to ensure accurate reporting of results. The desired criteria for this project are equipment that is energy efficient and does not require a lot of electricity to operate at full capacity. It is also desired that the equipment and test are easy to operate, and results can be interpreted without misunderstanding. The optional criteria would be to have the equipment be small and less intrusive, taking up less space in the entrance of the building.
Recommendations/Evaluation
COVID-19 has affected businesses in various ways, and as a result some businesses have had to create new methods and procedures to resume work while maintaining safety. The safety of the employees is especially important; therefore, it is essential to the company to establish a safe work environment for them. To guarantee an employee safety, it is recommended we install a self-directed screening station outside of the building for employees to utilize prior to entering. There will be a feasibility study involving 20% of employees to make sure the project will be effective. During the feasibility study, the employees will be evaluated on how they will utilize the self-directed screening station. The staff conducting the trial is required to complete the online training before the feasibility date. The feasibility study can either be successful, or unsuccessful and if any unexpected problems should arise, the issue will be corrected, and a new feasibility date will be scheduled. Once the feasibility study is successful, more employees will be scheduled to return to the building until all employees have returned.
The project management team will play a significant role in implementing the self-directed screening station. Assumptions and constraints carry out an important role in forming a risk plan, therefore, the project team must analyze these (Usmani, 2019). The plan will be built around the participation of the team and senior management. The importance of management reviews of the testing station and communication with the key stakeholders and senior management will continue upon completion of the project.

Simplified Scoring Model
Next World Innovations, Inc. evaluated three candidate projects: an electronic document filing system, renovating a school for COVID-19 compliance, and installing a COVID-19 temperature monitoring system. All candidate projects were considered due to their relevance worldwide.
Electronic Document Filing System
Creating a digitalized system to transition all hard copy documents into an E-filing system. This will allow the company to become eco-friendly. Additionally, it would allow employees to access information from anywhere at any time. As companies become technologically advanced, an E-filing system would ensure that processes are up to date.
School Renovation
Renovating a school to meet COVID-19 guidelines will ensure that schools are meeting health standards as students and educators return to the classroom. Currently students of all ages are not able to attend school in person due to the pandemic. This renovation will adhere to CDC guidelines, providing a safe environment for students and educators to learn and work.
COVID-19 Temperature Monitoring Stations
Currently, we employ staff to take the temperatures of anyone wishing to enter our building. With the current set up, the person to person contact is increased for every individual that comes into contact with check in staff. PPE is being discarded at a fast rate. Gloves are required to be changed in between each person and the temperature monitor cleaned before and after each use. To ensure that the organization is monitoring employee health prior to entrance while decreasing the use of PPE and cleaning supplies, a hands-free temperature monitoring system will be installed. This system will be cost effective and minimize human contact while maintaining safety.
Evaluation Criteria
Each project was evaluated utilizing five selection criteria: cost, social impact, economic impact, project length, and development risk. Each criterion was given an importance weight between 1 and 3. An importance weight of 1 is considered not as important as a score of 3. Each category was then given a score based on the specific criteria within each candidate project. A scoring system between 1-10 was used. A score of 10 indicates the best possible outcome whereas a score of 1 is the worst possible outcome. The importance weight was then multiplied by the score to obtain a weighted score for each criterion. Building a community garden on empty plots of land will enhance the beauty of the city and benefit its residents. Apartment dwellers do not have the space to grow gardens in the city, and the shared plots of land will be available for prospective gardeners to turn unused land into a greenspace producing a variety of crops of vegetables and fruit.

The organizations objective is to provide an additional resource for a community through the building of a garden. The completion of the garden will yield multiple benefits for residents of the community and fulfill a disparity within the neighborhood. The building of the community garden was identified as an opportunity due to limited accessibility to garden resources within this neighborhood. A contributor to this problem is the infrastructure of the community; there is a lack of garden space in inner cities that disenfranchises residents of resources. A critical success factor of this project is the positive impact it can have on the community. This project will be deemed successful if the residents of the community utilize the garden and benefit from its resources.
The organization is adept to develop a strategic project management plan that identifies deliverables and requirements to meet the goal. Gaps in the organizations capabilities include the resources to build the garden; contractors will be employed to account for this gap. Throughout the project, the team will use cost and qualitative return on investment (ROI) as decision criteria. All decisions will be based on the cost and community benefit associated with the development activities.
Risks for the building the garden include budget, time, and community impact. Unforeseen issues could impact the allocated budget and can cause the organization to spend additional capital. Additionally, all project management activities will be scheduled and time-sensitive. Potential hurdles in development could cause delays and affect the timeline of the project. Lastly, community impact could be a potential risk as the development of the garden could disrupt residents.
Recommendations/Evaluation
This respective project will require many parties to be involved. The parties involved shall encompass community outreach representatives on behalf of the city, Environmental scientists that can support in a role of advisors with regards to environmental regulations and water laws, and botanists that can advise to which vegetation can work long term. Gathering these individuals with their respective expertise, will require a plan that will allow each individual to work on the project while not getting in each other’s way. A few constraints that will inevitably be crossed, will be that of sticking to allotted budget and time schedule. Due to the ongoing pandemic, these constraints may be exasperated. It is no mystery that this project will have many risks involved ranging from weather/environment issues, contractor quotes/work, and budgetary issues. To combat budgetary concerns, a budget will be composed and proposed with full transparency so that the community will have full knowledge of the projects financials. The budget will include quotes from independent contractors to fill the roles needed to successfully get this project going. An open forum discussion with the community of what we are trying to accomplish with the community garden and the positive outcomes will be held.

Simplified Scoring Model
Our firm was presented with three project options. Those options were to supply technology such as tablets or laptops to grade school children, to undertake the installation of a new internet grid in a rural community, or to build a city community garden. These projects were compared using a set of criteria that were assigned a weighted importance value which were then compared between projects (Palcic & Lalic, 2009).
Each criterion was compared individually to the other criteria, so that only two criteria were being compared at a time. Each comparison was given a value between 1 and 9, 1 being equally important and 9 being the highest possible superiority of the criteria over the compared criteria (Palcic & Lalic, 2009). These values were then averaged for each criterion giving the final weighted importance for each. Each criterion was then evaluated between projects and a score was given. For these scores between 1 and 9, 1 represents the least beneficial outcome for the firm, while 9 represents the most beneficial. For example, a high project cost would be given a lower score, as this would be less beneficial for the firm. Finally, the scores were multiplied with the importance weight, giving the total scores for each project, allowing the team to make its decision. Introduction
Communication theory is a broad concept that explains the production of information on
how it is transmitted and how the message is conveyed. The theory views communication as an
integral part of the modern age activities and businesses (McDermott, 2009). In an organization’s
decision-making process, the formulation of laws and regulations require effective
communication (Sherry, 2019). Attribution theory is a concept concerned with how to explain
courses of events and behavior. It also examines gathered information and how it is combined to
form a casual judgment and explanation events. Attribution theory is a significant factor in
workplaces concerned with perceived causes of failure and success. This theory intends to help
people know the reasons for their actions and attribute causes of behavior (McDermott, 2020).
This literature review aims to analyze how communication and attribution theory help in dealing
with workplace crisis management.
Discussion
When an emergency occurs in the workplace, effective planning and a quick reaction are
required. A crisis leads to a non-conducive environment to perform effectively. Crisis
management is a complicated factor requiring intervention from the employees and the
leadership structure (Honigmann, Mendy, & Spratt, 2020). There are various types of crises that
can occur in an organization. They include terror attacks, technological emergencies, natural
disasters, violence, confrontation, organization misdeeds, and disease outbreaks (Coombs, 2007).
These crises are a threat to the organization’s operations and management, and therefore, prompt
measures should be introduced. This paper reviews the implementation of communication and
attribution theory in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has set an unprecedented nature that has caused one of the
most abrupt disruptions of the decade. Workplaces are the most affected, reeling with fear and
uncertainty due to its tremendous effects (Honigmann et al., 2020). Furthermore, the disease
could represent the ultimate test of resiliency for companies. Dealing with a crisis requires
strategic planning coupled with effective policies to mitigate its impact. In tackling the COVID-
19 crisis, both internal and external communication is a vital factor. COVID-19 is an infection
that quickly spreads from one person to another, causing strained health conditions and death.
This is a threat to the work employees and brutal to the economy. Strategic planning should be
done before the crisis to facilitate ease of crisis mitigation. When a disaster occurs,
communication should be well established in the work environment (Coombs, 2017). An
organization can publicize the plight in websites to attract support from the external
environment. In the internal environment, intranet sites can be used to ensure a smooth flow of
information. COVID-19 is transmitted faster because of its capability to thrive on a surface for a
long time (Charoensukmongkol & Phungsoonthorn, 2020). If a COVID-19 case is reported in the
workplace, the sites will enable direct access of the information, and preventive measures are
taken to prevent further transmission.
Attribution theory is a concept that is very effective in dealing with COVID-19 in the
workplace. The approach provides the validity of the question “why,” which helps develop a
course of action (McDermott, 2009). The facets of the crisis influence the attributions and
reputations held by stakeholders. Understanding the stakeholders in the workplace, therefore,
improves post-crisis communication. When COVID-19 is reported in a workplace, crisis
management is likely to perceive the event’s cause is internal. Through the attribution theory, the
employees can explain the cause of the crisis relating to some factors that can be mitigated.

Conclusion
In conclusion, human beings are prone to assigning causes of actions depending on the
situation. This is a significant factor in crisis management as it facilitates developing an effective
mitigation plan. Through communication theory, a crisis can be evaluated and appropriately
managed. Therefore, it is safe to say that communication and attribution theory intervention
effectively deal with a severe situation like COVID-19 in the workplace.

Summary We argue that although attributional processes appear to affect virtually all goal and reward oriented behavior in organizations, they have not received adequate attention in the organ- izational sciences. In this Incubator, we encourage scholars to unlock the potential of attribution theory to develop more complete explanations of organizational behavior. Copyright # 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Introduction
Attribution processes have been underutilized in the organizational sciences, yet have tremendous
potential to explain a wide range of workplace behaviors. The validity of attribution theory and the
tools to measure attributional processes are well-documented and frequently used by social
psychologists (Martinko, Douglas, & Harvey, 2006). We suspect that the underutilization of attribution
theory in the organizational sciences may have originated from concerns raised in the early-1980s that
cast attribution theory in an overly negative light. In this Incubator, we address those concerns and
demonstrate that attributions are relevant to many organizational phenomena, with a particular
emphasis on attribution styles, which are stable and reliable predictors of human behavior (e.g.,
Martinko, Harvey, & Douglas, 2007).
Definition, Role, and Function of Attributions
When we refer to attribution theory we are referring to the work of Heider (1958), Kelley (1973), and
Weiner (1986), which defines attributions as individuals explanations for the causes of their successes

and failures. The basic premise is that people have an innate desire to understand the causes of
important outcomes in their lives and that their attributions influence their responses to these outcomes
(Heider, 1958). Typical attributional explanations for outcomes are ability, effort, the nature of the task,
and luck.
Attributions are individuals beliefs about the causes of their successes and failures (i.e., rewards
and punishments) and influence expectancies, emotions, and behaviors (Martinko et al., 2007).
Recognizing that behavior is influenced by rewards and punishments, as almost all organizational
scholars would agree, and that attributions influence behaviors, it follows that the entire range of
organizational behaviors that are influenced by rewards/punishments are also affected by attributions.
Because rewards and punishments are important, individuals have a vested interest in knowing their
causes.
In addition to attributions for specific events, recent research demonstrates that attribution styles are
useful for understanding individual behaviors (see Martinko et al., 2007). Attribution styles are stable,
trait-like tendencies to make certain types of attributions that affect behaviors across situations.
Attribution styles can affect interpersonal relations and, as these relations unfold over time, the effects
of styles become more pronounced. Thus, although a specific attribution may not predict relationship
quality, the consistency with which a style manifests itself over time may have significant impacts on
work relationships. Research indicates that attribution styles are related to perceptions of the quality of
leader-member relations, victimization, aggression, entitlement, self-efficacy, and the perceived
desirability of job candidates. There is also reason to believe that attribution styles are related to other
outcomes, such as organizational citizenship behavior, justice, and burnout. Next, we discuss why
attribution theory has been underutilized, and discuss areas where attribution processes can help
address organizational research questions.

What is a Video Essay?
A video essay (also known as audiovisual essay) is the basic equivalent to a written
essay, except that it is produced into a visual format i.e. a video. The term video
essay as it is still evolving and derives from film studies. From the screen studies
perspective, it is a video that analyses specific topics or themes relating to film and
television and is relevant as it comments on film in its own language.
 
This guide refers to the video essay from the context of the academic audiovisual
essay as a multimodal form that combines written, audio and visual modes to
communicate an idea. As a structure, the video essay is thesis-driven, and uses
images with text so that the audience can read and interpret the idea or argument in
a multimodal way.
 
In educational settings, the term video essay is used broadly for teacher/student-
learner generated video and as a vehicle to transmediate between written-text to
digital forms. Through the video essay form, students are able to achieve learning

Stories such as this one spoke of the strong sense of unity that held the Egyptian population together and enabled them to speak out and achieve results. Many of the Middle East’s most famous artists wrote songs about this feeling of togetherness during this time period, and one song in particular, Boshret Kheir by singer Hussein al-Jasmi, encouraged the Egyptian people to take a stand, as one:

A fundraising effort that has no goal, for example, that is intended to raise as much as we can or that continues until a certain total has been achieved, is therefore not a campaign. A goal and deadline known only to those within the organization may bring discipline to their efforts, but it does not influence the thinking of prospective donors, so that approach is not a campaign either. A campaign has aspecificdollar goal and adeadlinefor achieving it that areannouncedto the public, in order to capture attention and motivate timely action by all who need to be involved. That includes individuals within the organization’s leadership. By committing the organization and themselves to a goal and deadline that is publicly known, the board and CEO raise the stakes for everyone (Dove, 2000; Kihlstedt, 2010).
Specific Purposes
The annual-giving program may include general appeals that are based on the overall case for the organization. But a campaign is undertaken for a specific purpose or purposes, not just to raise more money. It is centered on specificobjectivesthat relate to strategic priorities of the organization. Those may include a new building project, a renovation, needed equipment, endowment, program support, increased annual giving, or some combination (Kihlstedt, 2010). The purposes are justified with a case that relates them to the organization’s broader strategic goals.
Rated Prospect Lists and Specific Asks
Campaign fundraising is based on the principle of proportionate giving, discussed earlier in this text. In other words, prospects are asked to give in proportion to their capacity to do so, based on ratings the organization and its prospect researchers have developed. They are not asked simply to give what they can. The latter type of initiative might be called acollection, but it would not meet the definition of a campaign. In a campaign, the top prospects are asked for specificamountsfor specificpurposes, based on an assessment of their financial capabilities and interests.
Sequential Fundraising
The principle ofsequential fundraising(Brakeley, 1980) is central to the success of a campaign. A fundraising effort that begins with a solicitation of the organization’s entire constituency is not a campaign. It is anappeal. It is unlikely to maximize giving because it does not engage the power of standards and visible role models in order to guide donors as to what their own response should be. In other words, it does not activate the social influences on giving that are important to raising donor sights.
Campaign gifts are solicited from top down and the inside out (McGoldrick & Robell, 2002, p. 141). Asinsideout implies, the first groups to be solicited include members of the governing board, top prospects, past donors, and often the organization’s staff. The campaign then gradually rolls out to prospects in more distant circles of the organization’s constituency, as defined and discussed in. The top-down/inside-out process unfolds over the course of the campaign, and discipline in following it is important to maximize support, although sometimes difficult to sustain. Rolling out the campaign prematurely runs the risk of preemptive gifts that lower sights throughout the pyramid (Dove, 2000; Kihlstedt, 2010). Consistent with the principle of sequential fundraising, campaigns are conducted in phases, discussed soon.
Organized Volunteer Leadership
Organized volunteer leadership is characteristic of a campaign. As discussed earlier in this text, people tend to follow the example of others whom they admire or with whom they wish to be associated. This principle has been fundamental in the practitioner literature (e.g., Seymour, 1966) and is supported by theory discussed in(e.g., Harbaugh, 1998). The visible engagement of prestigious volunteer leaders is thus a critical ingredient of a campaign strategy and authenticates the case for support. Such leaders are enlisted to serve in visible roles as campaign chairs or cochairs or as members of the campaign leadership committee. And, of course, the example of their own leadership gifts and active engagement in cultivation and solicitation also are helpful (Fredericks, 2010; Kihlstedt, 2010).
Emphasis on Major Gifts
Although comprehensive campaigns usually encompass all gifts to the organization during the campaign period, including annual gifts, all campaigns emphasize the solicitation ofmajor gifts. Thinking back on the discussion in, this emphasis is essential in light of thePareto principle, which suggests that 80 to 90 percent of the dollar total comes from just 10 to 20 percent of gifts to the campaign (Weinstein, 2009).
Another traditional campaign axiom is therule of thirds, attributable to Harold J. Seymour (1966). It holds that about one-third of the campaign total comes from the top ten gifts, a second third comes from about the next one hundred gifts, and the final third of the total comes from all other gifts, in smaller amounts. The importance of major and principal gifts in today’s campaigns may render Seymour’s (1966) exact proportions obsolete, but the general point is still correct: a successful campaign relies disproportionately on major gifts.
Phases of the Campaign
Consistent with the principles already described, a campaign is conducted inphases. Various authors define the phases somewhat differently and offer varied inventories of what tasks are to be completed in each phase (e.g., Dove, 2000; Kihlstedt, 2010; McGoldrick & Robell, 2002; Pierpont, 2003; Worth, 2010). But most descriptions include many commonalities.depicts phases of the campaign in a diagram I have devised but is generally consistent with what other authors describe.
There are two broad phases, aquiet phaseand apublic phase. The quiet phase encompasses a time when planning and preparation for the campaign are well-known among insiders, but the campaign has not yet been announced to the general public.
Some people refer to this as thesilent phaseof the campaign, but I prefer the termquiet, since some peopleoften manyare aware of what is happening. As the term suggests, the public phase occurs after the goal and deadline for completion of the campaign have been announced.
