The planning phase of the action research is vital for the success of the research. The reason is that planning makes things clearer and easier. It is better to work on a plan that to undertake something without knowing exactly where to start and how to proceed. In other words, the planning phase entails laying out the sequence of activities, events or procedures that are to be undertaken in the research or other project. It sets a clear path to be followed from the beginning to the end, and provides also a means of evaluating the progress. The actual actions undertaken are compared with the plan to make sure everything is going as planned, and possible deviations corrected. The planning phase of the first iteration in this action research carries all these benefits and implications of planning.

The key outcome of the planning phase is a detailed action plan- that is, a set of the actions that are intended to be undertaken in the action research. It answers the questions of who is going to do what, how and when is that to be done? In this iteration, the key goal is to establish the evaluation standards or benchmarks. To achieve this goal, there are several things that needs to be done and in a certain sequence in order to arrive at this. These are presented in the planning phase. The various items to be considered in the planning phase include the following:

The types or organizations to refer to, and their practices

The organization to be evaluated for the action research, and its practices

The information needed about these organizations

The sources of the information

How to collect the information about these organizations

How to analyse the data

Establishment of best standards or benchmarks

With these things in mind, the next thing to do is to develop a plan of how to undertake the above mentioned activities. This considers that the iteration entails an assessment of several firms often regarded as the best firms in the industry and assume their practices to be the best practices and then use them as standards with which to evaluate the such, the plan for this iteration is as follows:

Search for companies that use java for high performance computing. In most cases, the internet serves as a good source for this information contained in adverts and commercials, as well as consumer insights and rankings.

Compile a list of about ten of these organizations with best ratings.

Search these companies to establish their practices. Again, this information is abundant on the internet in websites and databases. Companies will always try to differentiate themselves from the competitors by providing information about their practices and they are different or unique. The plans would yield no value if everything ended at the planning phase. As such, the plans must be put into action, they have to be actualized. This is now the action phase of the action research. This might be considered as the most important phase because it is the real doing and the actual pursuing of the goals. In simple terms, the action phase aims at undertaking the activities, procedures or events as outlined in the planning phase following the sequence established therein. As mentioned earlier on, things do get messy in that there might be deviations from the planned actions, but it should be understood that the action phase has to follow the plan. Any modification should be for the betterment of the plan and perhaps the intended outcome. Deviations from are not uncommon because planning simply does not fully take care of uncertainties in the future. Expectations do not always turn out to be so, and this may explain why the action phase is the most critical of all the phases. The deviations may even ruin everything.

In the first iteration, the actions to be undertaken are as outlined in the plan and little deviations also came up. For example, the plan sought to asses about ten of the companies that use java for high computing, but five were what was actually used in the action research. This was because of inadequate data for some of the companies, and also cases of duplications. However, everything came out fine.

The actions that were actually undertaken include the following:

Data about the companies was collected. The data collection methods that were employed include observation, and library search. Internet search focused on the websites, databases, and consumer blogs. The data sought included issues of security, recognition customer needs, satisfaction of customer needs, innovation, customizations, etc.

The data analysis was done, and this entailed filtering the data obtained above by means of compiling a list of common practices. Other unique practices were also compiled on the basis of their innovativeness and creativity, customization issues, competitiveness, etc.

The list of best practices was then compiled. These practices were then labelled evaluation standards or benchmarks, set ready for the iterations that followed.

Phase concluded.

As seen from the above actions, the phase was concluded when the goal is reached, that is, when the standards were established. This ushered in the next phase of the action research and first iteration.


After undertaking the actions and attaining the desired outcome, the next phase is observation. In essence, observation phase entails studying, monitoring, and recording in order to assess the outcome, its effectiveness, challenges in the action and planning phase, and also any interventions used. In simple terms, the observation phase is almost purely studying the planning and action phases in order to learn several aspects of the iteration. These aspects may include the expected outcome, actual outcome, what was done, why the things were done the way they were done, if there a better way, what was missed, etc. the observation phase also entails checking if everything that was necessary for the iteration was incorporated. The factors for success are also noted and challenges and constraints analysed. The study of the entire iteration also helps in the detection of flows and possible solutions to the problems encountered. Since this iteration entails setting the standards for the evaluation, it is prudent to assess the actions to see whether the best standards were set to avoid biases in the entire action research.

The observation of the first iteration revealed several things that are vital for the action research. One observation pertains to the difficulties in gathering data caused by the fact that not all company practices are adequately documented. Secondly, the intensity of customizations taking place in these companies almost made it impossible to establish standards because the companies seems very different. Generalizations are a bit difficult. Apart from these challenges, it was also observable that only mere deviations were required, and that entailed reduction of the companies from ten to five. Everything else proceeded as planned.


The last phase of the iteration is the reflection phase. The reflection phase is often a recap of the lessons learned throughout the iteration- that is, from the planning phase, action phase, and the observation phase. This is about revisiting the whole iteration to understand the things that took place, how they took place and why they took place. It is in this phase that one recalls everything including the success and challenges. Just like in the observation phase, the challenges are a key focus in the reflection phase. The reflection on the above mentioned challenges would reveal things that were not done right and perhaps develop an explanation. All in all, this phase is important because there are other iterations to follow which will also require plans, actions and observation. The lessons learned in the first iteration are important for the following iterations. Things that were not done right will perhaps be done right in the next iterations, thanks to the reflection phase that reveals all that is essential for the overall success.

My eating pattern ties into the concept of holistic health and eating philosophy. This is because i try to ensure that my diet is balanced and contains all the necessary elements required by the body for optimal functioning. Holistic health is attained by practising various aspects of health living such as eating and exercising among others. By observing a balanced diet in my eating I am able to get all the body’s micro and macro nutrients. Foods such as fruits and vegetables tie into the eating philosophy since I am able to attain most of nutrients that are destroyed in food as a result of prolonged cooking. My food diary is not a typical representation of my daily diet since I tend to skip meals and eat past the stipulated eating time. During weekends for instance, I don’t adhere to the set down eating timelines which makes the diary less of daily diet.

My average intake of the five food groups and discretionary calculated over the two day period illustrated in table 2 is not in line with the Australian dietary guidelines and recommendations. Although my daily average food intake from the table entails all the five groups of food recommended by the Australian dietary guidelines and recommendations, the grain and vegetable intake is lower than the amount stipulated by the dietary guidelines and recommendations. According to the Australian dietary guideline recommendations, the amount of grain and vegetables should be slightly higher than all other food groups. The higher amount of grains and vegetables in the diet is attributed to the role played by the two food groups in facilitating optimal body functioning. Vegetables provide the body with macro and micro nutrients, vitamins and fiber. Nutrients and vitamins are responsible for optimal function of the various body organs and improving the body’s immunity. Fiber in vegetables is used by the body to improve digestion and prevent diseases such as diabetes, coronary diseases and reduction in obesity. Just like vegetables, grain is a significant source of nutrients, vitamins and dietary fiber which play significant roles in facilitating optimal body functioning.

My diet over the two day period has got high amounts of proteins which is contrary to the Australian dietary guidelines recommendations. According to the Australian dietary guidelines recommendations, proteins in the diet should be kept low since high amounts of protein in the diet are harmful. This is because high protein diets such as dairy products and red meat often translate to obesity which increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases. High diets may also translate to kidney issues as the body may have difficulties eliminating protein metabolism waste. In order to align my average intake to the Australian dietary guidelines, the amount of vegetables and grains should be improved and proteins be reduced.

State which three nutrients you chose to analyze and after referring the reader to table 3, were there any nutrients that were significantly higher or lower that the recommended intake for your age and gender?

The three elements that will be analyzed in table three will be Protein fiber and calcium. My analysis of the three elements from table three established that the protein content was higher than the recommended daily intake. The fiber content on the other hand was lower that the recommended daily intake while the calcium content was in line with the required daily intake. The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) for protein is 0.8 grams per body weight’s kilogram. This therefore implies that my Dietary Reference Intake is 50.4 grams of proteins. From table 3, my average intake was found to be 78.3 grams which was 28.3 grams above the recommended daily intake. Based on the foods that I consumed over the two day period, the high amounts of protein intake in my diet can be attributed to the egg content in the egg bacon content and the dairy products from the Oreo. Due to the harmful effect of high levels of protein in my diet, the protein level should be drastically reduced. This could be achieved by replacing some of the protein sources in the diet with grains or vegetables.

The Dietary Reference Intake for fiber is 25 grams per day. However, the recommended amount of fiber tends to vary slightly between the male and female genders. The recommended dietary intake for an adult female is 25 grams of fiber per day while the recommended intake for a male is 35 grams of fiber per day. From table 3, my total fiber intake was calculated and found to be 16 grams which was lower than the recommended daily intake of fiber. The deficiency in fiber requires that I should introduce foods with high fiber content into the diet as a way of improving fiber content in my diet. In order to improve the fiber content in my diet, I should consider increasing the sources of fiber content in my diet while minimizing protein sources. This could be achieved by replacing the egg roll bacon with vegetables as vegetables are high sources of fiber content in the diet.

The level of calcium in the diet was found to be sufficient. The calcium level in the diet was found to be 1500 milligrams while the recommended dietary level for calcium is 1300mg for an adult. This therefore makes the amount of calcium in my diet to be within the recommended dietary intake range. The high amount of calcium in my diet that enabled me to attain the recommended diet range is the Oreo which is made up of chocolate cookie sandwich and vanilla cream. Cream is a diary product and has got high calcium contents which played a significant role in improving the level of calcium in the diet. Due to sufficiency in the amount of calcium in the diet as a result of Vanilla cream, Oreo should be maintained in the diet in the same quality and quantity.

From the above analysis, there is need to improve this diet by incorporating different foods. The egg bacon should be eliminated since it is a high source of protein in the diet. As a result, the vanilla cream from the Oreo should be left to be the only source of proteins in the diet. This is because dairy products have been known to produce low levels of proteins. In this case, Oreo will serve as a source of both calcium and protein in the diet. In addition, fruits should also be incorporated into the diet since it is the only food type that is missing from the diet and is a rich source of nutrients and vitamins.

My current intake has got significant deficiencies with regard to nutrients, vitamins and fiber. This is because food groups that are high sources of nutrients, vitamins and fiber are lacking in the diet. Vegetables, fruits and grains are usually high sources of vitamins, nutrients and fiber in the diet. However, since my diet lacks the above three aspects I am likely to suffer from various complications as a result of dietary behavior. Lack of the three nutrients mentioned above could result in various diseases as would be discussed below.

According to Mealha et al. (2013), one of the primary diseases that I am likely to suffer due to the lack of fiber in my diet is constipation. Constipation can be understood to be lack of sufficient bowel movement. Due to insufficiency in bowel movement, an individual suffering from constipation is likely to suffer from having trouble with bowel movement, swollen belly that might be painful, discomfort when passing stool, too much gas inbuilt, very hard stool, very small stool and constant throwing up. Constipation could result to a number of medical complications such as colon cancer, anal fissure, gall stones, indigestion and hemorrhoids among others (Mealha, 2013).

Vegetables and fruits are rich sources of nutrients, vitamins and fiber. Due to the lack of fruits and vegetables in my diet, I am likely to suffer from various illnesses as will be discussed below. The first disease I am likely to suffer from due to lack of fruits in my diet is cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of sodium and potassium which plays a significant role in regulating an individual’s cardiovascular health. However, in the event that any of these two nutrients miss, one is likely to suffer from a number of cardiovascular issues. Similarly, my lack of sufficient fruits and vegetables in the diet is likely to translate into a number of cardiovascular issues such as hypertension and varicose veins among others (Lawrence, Gandy and Douglas, 2016).

Due to the low fiber content intake in my diet, I am also at risk of diabetes. This is because soluble fiber tends to swell while passing through the gut hence slowing down the absorption of food nutrients such as glucose and fatty acids from the digestive system to the blood system. This plays a significant role in regulating blood sugar levels thus lowering the risks of diabetes and high levels of cholesterol. However, in the event that sufficient fiber lacks in the diet, the absorption of glucose and cholesterol is unregulated hence putting one at risk of diabetes (Mealha et al., 2013).

Obesity is also another issue that one can be faced with due to the lack of fruits and vegetable in the diet. Fruits and vegetables have a high fiber level which translates to a low energy density hence fewer calories per unit. As a result, the consumption of fruits and vegetables provides bulk to one’s diet but doesn’t overload the body with calories. In addition, the high fiber content regulates absorption of fats into the body hence preventing obesity. This therefore implies that my lack of fruits and vegetables is likely to translate to obesity. This is because the other food groups consumed such as lean meat and dairy products have higher calories. Due to the low density and high calories associated with other foods such as proteins, an individual has to consume to feel satisfied which translates to obesity (Lawrence, Gandy and Douglas, 2016).

What are the primary improvement that require to be made to better your recommendations?

The first implementation to be adopted towards bettering my diet would be the minimization of proteins in my diet. This could be facilitated through the elimination of egg bacon in my diet and replacing it with a food group that has got a higher fiber, vitamins and nutrients content such as fruits and grains among others. This could be achieved in my diet through replacing egg bacon with vegetables and grains. An example of this would be the introduction of corn and lettuce in place of egg bacon.

The second implementation to be made in my diet towards meeting the Australian dietary guidelines recommendations will be the introduction of fruits during meals in the course of the day. This is because fruits was the primary food type that was missing from the diet. Similarly, the diet had a low fiber content that would be significantly improved by the introduction of fruits in the diet. The fruits should be consumed after the consumption of other foods during meal times. Various fruits have various nutrients contents hence their incorporation will go along in improving the diet’s content.

The third implementation to be made towards bettering my dietary recommendations is the replacement of iced mocha with natural pure water. This is because iced mocha has got a very low nutritive benefit and is likely to cause issues in the body due to lack of any significant nutrient. Water on the other hand serves several functions in the body such as hydration, maintaining an osmotic balance, washing down toxins and maintaining a neutral PH among others. However, it should be noted that water cannot be served as a meal hence would be served during meal times while iced Mocha will be replaced nutritive foods such as grains among others.

Different food alternatives should also be introduced with the aim of facilitating an improvement in the food content. Oreo for instance as a diary meal should be replaced with fresh milk. This is because fresh milk has all the required nutrients unlike Oreo which has been processed hence resulting in loss of these nutrients. Another alternative to be introduced is fish as lean meant due to the various nutrients it provides instead of white meat.

My diet routine should also be strictly adhered to on the basis of aspects such as time and food served. As a result, I should ensure that I eat at the correct time and avoid junk foods such as noodles with low nutritive benefits.

Most of us have things we are fond of and even collect. A look around the office might reveal books, sports memorabilia, figurines, or any number of other items that possess a degree of intrinsic and extrinsic worth to us. However, what happens to “all of that” upon our death? Perhaps a spouse or children will inherit those things. But, will those items have the same value to the heir? Over and over the same story emerges. Heirs may preserve a few items that are meaningful to them, but much of what we spend our life collecting or adoring gets donated or disposed. Similarly, all of those things that we thought we “owned,” will survive us, and someone else will be called upon to determine what happens to them next.

So, what do we truly own? Sometimes we feel like what we have worked for and achieved is “ours.” But the reality is that everything we build and possess is only “ours” for a short period of time. Thus, we are not owners – we are stewards – entrusted with the care of resources for the short time we inhabit the earth. Thus, the important question is: are we good stewards?

The same is true of every leader. Leaders are not owners of resources as much as they are stewards of resources. The move from an owner mentality to a steward mentality can represent a substantial shift in perspective. During LDR-410: Leading with Wisdom, Vision, and Values, you are going to explore the nature of being a steward – a good steward. You will read a scripture passage each week and reflect on a key term or idea about stewardship as well as other implications for your owner à steward shift in thinking and doing as a leader.

Workshops two through 6 will examine the good steward theme as it emerges in Luke’s gospel. However, for this workshop, we need to investigate a foundational theme imprinted in Scripture. The Bible proclaims, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it” (New International Version Bible, 1973/1984, Psalm 24:1(new tab)). The biblical answer to the question – who owns it all? – is God! He is the only, real owner of anything.

In the book of Deuteronomy (where our reading for this workshop comes from), Moses recalls (Deuteronomy literally means repetition of the law) God’s work to lead the Israelite people out of their time of bondage in Egypt and toward the “promised land.” In chapter 8, Moses warns the people not to forget God’s ownership and work. He is the source of all that they have now and in the future. Even though they have had to (and will) work hard to build their nation, Moses points out that God gave them such ability. The biblical testimony of reality is: God owns it all. God provides our abilities. We are not owners. We are stewards.
