Last Days of Solitary
Last days of Solitary is a film directed and produced by Dan Edge and Lauren Mucciolo. The movie was filmed at Maine State prison, where Dan Lauren had access to the solitary wing of the prison. According to one of the producers, the prison’s warden accepted their request to film because he knew the extent of what solitary confinement does to inmates (Edge, n.d). The warden wanted to change the system of solitary confinement in his prison. The movie directors got right the camera angles, which showed raw motions of how prisoners in solitary confinement behave. The film clearly shows the dangers the prisoners face when in solitary confinement. Examples of the risks include self-harm through banding their heads on the door and mental health disorders due to isolation. The film got the intensity that several prisoners in the country go through every day as they try and cope with their situation of isolation. The film got wrong the concern of the correctional officers because, in many prisons, prisoners in solitary confinement are rarely checked upon by the correctional officers. The correctional officers portrayed in the film were constantly checking up on the inmates in solitary confinement, and I think this is not accurate in real life.
The film producers and directors’ research into this film were primarily focused on the correctional sector of the criminal justice system. Before filming this movie, the producers and directors needed to know the prevalence of solitary confinement in American prisons. The producers and directors needed to research the violations that land the inmates in solitary confinement. The other necessary research that the film directors and producers engaged in is the psychological effects of solitary confinement. Such issues are essential for them to learn before they film such a movie because it prepares them for what they will see in a real prison.
The setting is a real prison, and therefore, there is nothing out of place that might confuse someone unfamiliar with the period the movie was filmed. Most prisons in the United States have looked the same ever since the past, with only a few renovations differentiating them from what they are in the present. Everything in the setting of Last days of Solitary shows a solitary confinement setting that allows viewers to get the correct perspective of what the film is trying to portray. Official (2021), shows several inmates talk about their experiences and what they are going through, making the setting accurate.
The last days of Solitary is among the movies that has represented the issue of solitary confinement to public members. Solitary confinement was not used for most of the 20th century, and it became popular during the second half of the century (Marcotte, 2017). Solitary confinement began gaining popularity, and through the film, people could see the effect it has on inmates. The film enhanced the widespread view that solitary confinement is a danger to inmates and that reforms should be made. Many prisons in the United States started to find reform measures to reduce the use of solitary confinement among its prisoners. After the film, the popular view was that solitary confinement affects the prisoners instead of helping them reform as required in correctional facilities.
The thoughts I have on this movie are that the producers and directors were brave to embark on such a task during a period when solitary confinement was at its apex. Not many people can take such a risk because many of the solitary unit inmates are dangerous and could have been harmed. The film was important because it made people see the real picture. Most of the inmates focused on showing how solitary confinement is a danger rather than a benefit to the correctional system.

Briefly Explain the Three Explanations Often Utilized by Historians to Explain the Manner of Latin America’s Development During the 19th And 20th Centuries?
Latin America is a region in the Central and South America and the Caribbean. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Latin America’s development began by protecting and advancing its political and commercial interests (Craig et al., 2015). Threats from military forces were involved after Roosevelt adopted the Monroe’s doctrine where European colonies were no more in the western hemisphere. The Roosevelt corollary was also introduced, and the Latin American policies became evident in the construction of the Panama Canal (Craig et al., 2015). The canal was part of Latin American developments that were meant to open a passageway that stretched from the Caribbean to the Pacific.
Briefly Describe Some Of The Ways In Which The Creole Elite In Newly Independent Latin American Countries Maintained Their Dominant Position Socially, Politically And Economically.
After the Latin America’s development proposal of building the Canal was declined by the Columbian government, America sent a worship team to support a rebellion that was between the Panamanians and the Columbian government (Craig et al., 2015). By so doing, the dominant political, social, and economic positions were maintained.
Briefly Explain The Role Of Great Britain And Then The United States In Latin American Economies And Politics, Inclusive Of One Example Of American Military Intervention.
The Great Britain and the United States were actively involved in protecting the economic and political interests of Latin America. The United States intervened several times in various countries in Latin America. American troops were sent by President Woodrow Wilson to force dictators from power. As a result, the United States Marines landed to maintain civil order as a way of military intervention.
What Is A Caudillo? Explain The Role Of Caudillos In The Political History Of Argentina During The 19th And Early 20th Centuries. Make Sure To Mention Juan Perón!
Caudillo refers to a strongman in Latin America who is sometimes a dictator and normally bears strong ties with the military. In the political history of Argentina, caudillos had a significant influence on the military and could mobilize them in attacks for successful battles. Juan Peros was an authoritarian and nationalist in Argentina who founded a movement known as Peronism (Craig et al., 2015). The nationalist movement was founded in 1940 and was influential in the military and politics.
Provide A Brief Overview Of The Mexican Revolution, Beginning With Francisco Madero And Ending With Plutarco Elías Calles.
The Mexican revolution governed Mexico in the late twentieth century. The Institutional Revolutionary Party emerged from the Mexican revolution in 1911 during the reign of Francisco Madero (Craig et al., 2015). Francisco initiated the Mexican revolution while he acted as the President of Mexico. During his presidency, he was influential in the revolution and served between 1911 and 1913 (Craig et al., 2015). He embraced change in Mexico, resulting in a democratic nation. In 1924, the IRI founder known as Plutarco Elias Calles became a Mexican president and was passionate about the modern revolution in the military.
Briefly Explain The Process By Which Slavery Eventually Came To Be Abolished In Brazil. Make Sure To Account For The Relevant Economic Sectors!
Slavery in Brazil was rampant in the 18th century when leaders used to take advantage of people by exposing them to labor under unfavorable conditions. Enslaved people used to have limited access to essential resources such as food, shelter, and clothing and were exposed to demanding tasks. In the 19th century, slave trade abolition moves began through legislation. The law that freed slaves was passed, enabling a free nation (Craig et al., 2015). The major economic sector that was negatively affected by the slavery law was the sugar economy, as most of the enslaved people used to work in the sugar company.

Question One
To be a successful leader while adhering to Christian principles and doctrines may be a challenge for those in leadership positions. Regardless of how many people one manages, a person can be an excellent leader and undertake the job in a manner that would make Christ proud with authoritarianism. Christian leadership may be demonstrated in various settings, including the workplace, family, church, recreation, and the larger society. A business leader may draw inspiration from biblical passages to guide their behavior. According to “John 10:11”, a Christian servant believes that Jesus devoted his life to save his flock. Asserting that leaders are working for the welfare of their servants. Christ is a good shepherd, and his flock is safe in my hands. His life is dedicated to protecting and caring for the sheep (Low & Ayoko, 2020). Again, “In Peter 5:1-3, “Peter urges leaders to s supervise and serve as an example for their employees so that they will act and perform in the same manner as them. Avoid leading for personal benefit or elevating their position over others. Peter also warns servants to act to set an example for other coworkers.
Question Two
A theology of leadership helps in striking a balance between the biblical story and situation analysis. This results in the advancement of both ecclesiology and operational leadership simultaneously. Studying both biblical and historical leadership settings may aid in extending research. The study of leadership traits and practices exploded throughout the twentieth century. The emergence of leadership theories such as trait, behavioral and transformational gave Christians a framework to use their newfound wisdom due to the fundamental disparities between these ideas and Scripture’s leadership style. Searching for these ideas inside Scripture seemed as if anachronistic was being employed too frequently. The servant and spiritual leadership theories have more links to Christian philosophy. A theology of leadership based on these beliefs may be dangerous, argues. The unique interpretation of biblical truth is lost when people follow the ideals and leadership of popular culture.
Theology and philosophy share a lot of the same concerns. It explores God’s relationship to the world, the human soul’s nature, and its relationship to God. Theology deals with all of these issues, as well. My perspective of philosophy is that it aims to provide rational, commonsense, and logical answers to the major issues about life and its purpose. According to our beliefs about God or a higher intellect, theology aims to address the same questions as science, using the same methods (Taves, Asprem & Ihm, 2018). The choosing of church leaders has typically been done in a non-biblical manner. Most of the time, the position of leadership is bestowed to the most outgoing, successful, or selfless individuals. God has given every one of us these great abilities, but they are not enough to get one an executive job at their favorite company. As an alternative, the Bible lays forth the requirements for church authorities in “1 Timothy 3:1-7”. Qualities such as fidelity in marriage, tenderness, and patience are included in this list of character traits. As shepherds of God’s sheep, leaders must be proficient in the practice of teaching the Scriptures. The Bible makes it plain that all elders have the same role: equip, rule, shepherd, teach, and administer. Every elder also serves as a pastor in a local congregation. Elders who are self-supporting are distinguished from those who work at preaching and instructing, and the pastor is usually the most prominent serving and instructing elder.

Reflection on “Sport, Ethics and Leadership.”
Leadership has been a common term used in different fields, especially business, sport, politics, and general society. However, to understand the real meaning of the word leadership, one has to understand the origin of the term leadership. Some of the many theories of leadership and even many perspectives have tried to define leadership. The leader should be practical and capable, and therefore there are many ways that the term leader has described. The resulting outcome of the leader’s activities, altogether with the observations and perceptions of the humans, is one of the determinates of who the leader is. At first, what a perceived leader did or did not do as well as how they performed the work for the organization and the group is what defined leadership, but now a deep knowledge of effective leadership and efficient styles of leadership are well shaped by the different experimental analysis and academic literature.
However, it may be challenging to deal with your followers as a leader, especially if you don’t possess the leadership skills. For instance, being a commanding leader may make it difficult to lead people to attain the set goals. For the past two years, there have been complaints about my leadership skills and, therefore, seeking God’s help, and glory for getting across this book, for the book has given me tips and understanding of a better leader. However, as a teammate, this book expresses better practices to maintain and even better examples defined in the book, as I explain in this paper. In addition, the book also gives the employees insights into how they can practice the discussed skills to advance their careers. Therefore my discussion connects the leaders, employees and teammates’ understanding skills with those undressed in the book.
The “Sport, Ethics and Leadership” book has changed my leadership skills. For instance, it has made me realize why I have been facing many complaints about my leadership qualities. For example, it has come to my sense that for me to be a successful leader, I have to influence the employees to achieve positive. The reading of this book has enabled me to realize that speaking rudely to my employees, especially when they have been late, without even wanting to know the reason for being late, it being unethical. I have also got the insight of having a vision for the company. Having been using a coercive leadership style before, I understand it is the right time to change the style into an affiliative style where I will directly involve my employees and make sure we go together (Bowen & Al, 2017b). It will enable me to build loyalty and trust with my employees. To improve my company’s successes and interaction with my employees, I have to practice the type of servant leadership to ensure I have engaged my workers in decision making, planning, and even managing at some point. It will enable me to create a better relationship with my employees rather than practice the power at the group’s top.
However, this book explains better the use of ethics, especially in sports. For instance, it is easy to relate the ethics in sport as expressed in the book with ethics in my workplace. Therefor e the book gives deep insight to the reader and is easily translated, making it efficient for the readers. I also like the book for it uses simple words that enable easy understanding and even gives multiple examples for the reader’s better understanding. Something else that I like about the book is that at the end of every topic, their case studies and reflective question are to be answered by the reader to test the understanding of the topic.
Besides, I’m afraid I have to disagree with the book in the case of the “great man” theory that claims that leadership is inherited or inborn. It is not valid, for I attended the leadership and management classes at my university level. Therefore I can confirm that leadership is made, and anyone can be a leader once trained and be willing to be. Nevertheless, whatever surprises me is the difference between the leader and the manager. I never thought there was a difference between a manager and a leader until I came across the differences between the manager and the leader as expressed by Warren Bennis in the book (Bowen & Al, 2017b). And the most exciting difference is that the leader does the right thing, and the manager does things right.
Otherwise, the topic of this book is what attracted my attention into getting to read the book. Having faced many challenges in my workplace as a leader, I felt that reading this book would help me overcome the obstacles. Additionally, topics one to three mostly answered my questions of how and why I have been facing complaints about my leadership. Topic three of this book has greatly influenced my understanding of the qualities I require to win my employee’s trust and create a good relationship, unlike the one I had before(Bowen & Al, 2017b). Otherwise, the aim to understand the relationship between the ethic, sport and leadership has also contributed to my reading this book.
However, as an employee, it gets to my understanding that I expect to work motivated by my love for the job and not the compensation associated with the work. As the book supports, I have been using a doer work style in my career. I feel it’s better to change to a supportive and idea-oriented work style. It is the right time to accept my working environment and adapt to it. Cheating is another issue that leads to penalties, especially as an employee and losing a job. Otherwise, I will ensure that I am cooperative and a good time manager for potential time management. Taking instructions and knowing the right things to do and doing them right is another way of preparing for my career advancement opportunity.
As a teammate, I understand that one has to be individually committed to a group effort, support the other colleagues, put the team first, be ready to listen and learn, and be positive and respective. An example is a whereby one player fools the other opponent players to give a chance to his team to acquire the ball and score.
As a leader, my leadership philosophy relates to the power and influence theory that I practised ineffectively. On the other hand, after the review of the book, I get to clap for myself, for I have also been a successful leader and practised different leadership skills as highlighted in the book. For example, I realize that I have been using a coercive leadership style that has somehow helped me run the company effectively. Nevertheless, regarding the challenges I have been facing, I have been a goal-oriented leader who aims to achieve the goals, which is one of my strengths.
However, I have realized that I have been a servant leader after reading this book and being sincere. It has been to my realization it has not been a suitable type of leadership for it does not give the employee the right and opportunity to express themselves. However, I find It better to shift to a participative leadership style because it involves the employees in decision-making, creating better relationships with the workers.
I will be required to ensure I understand my past issues that have been a problem for my leadership in the company. Then I will create a relationship with my employees by calling them and allowing them to address the issues concerning their complaints. I will then let them know my leadership styles and type changes and request their cooperation as I apologize and promise to change effectively.
The guidelines leadership values for my development include developing my employees, possessing innovation skills and being ethical and civil minded, especially when it comes to employee rights. Good communication values will also help in my development as a leader.
In conclusion, the “ Sport, Ethics and Leadership” has been a significant influencer to the leaders, employees, and teammates. As addressed in this paper, it gives insight into what it is expected to do. Therefore this paper is influential when it comes to an understanding the leadership skills, employees skills and teamwork skills as driven by the “ Sport, Ethics and leadership” book.
