In this weeks discussion we will be examining the importance of airport self-inspection programs in depth and why they are crucial to the smooth normal day-to-day operations. In order for an airport to maintain the certification under 14 CFR part 139, an effective self-inspection program ensures the airport is operating in compliance with Part 139 standards. The duties of the airport are to define self-inspection procedures in the airport certification manual; and provide sufficient, qualified personnel with the equipment and resources to conduct self-inspections in accordance with the provisions of Part 139.327. It is crucial to perform a thorough airport inspection in order to guarantee the safety of the traveling public by properly inspecting such things as Paved and unpaved areas, Safety areas, Markings and signs, Lighting, NAVAIDs, Wildlife, Fueling, and Obstructions. The FAA will annually inspect the airport to ensure it is complying with the standards of Part 139 operations. Additionally, each certificate holder must Prepare, and maintain for at least 12 consecutive calendar months, a record of each inspection prescribed by this section, showing the conditions found and all corrective actions taken. Self-inspections are completed for various reasons including Regularly Scheduled inspections and Continuous Surveillance inspections for Construction, fueling, ground vehicles, wildlife. There are Periodic inspections on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis for fuel farms, and surveys. Additionally, there are Special inspections due to accidents, incidents, meteorological events, and specialty construction projects.

For airports, a strong self-inspection program is essential to ensure compliance with the provisions of Part 139. The airport must have the ability to perform multiple types of inspections. These inspections can be daily, continuous, periodic, and special occurrences. The primary areas of inspection are the movement areas including runways and taxiways. In addition, depending on the program the airport may also inspect ramps, aprons, and other areas of interest. The airport must have qualified trained individuals to perform the tasks on the inspection. These individuals must also attend recurrent training to be best prepared. The FAA strives to provide the safest, most efficient system and continues to evolve SMS (FAA, 2020). This data-driven approach has allowed the FAA to enhance safety by allocating resources more efficiently and effectively. SMS can be implemented and scaled in a flexible fashion. It was found that SMS improves overall training and safety awareness as well as the evaluation of hazards. The implementation of SMS will provide further safety beyond that of Part 139. Further with the automation of the Part 139 process, it is more affordable and sustainable. Real-time operations and the ability to benchmark the data better prepare the individuals (Malaviya, 2012). The automation also provides a path for Part 139 airports to successfully implement SMS.

Getting Started with The Clinical Practicum Experience

Description of Clinical Specialty

The clinical specialty that I have selected for my Practicum experience is the Infectious Disease Clinic at the VA Medical Center. This clinic renders services to individuals who have chronic illnesses such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. Approximately 95% of that patient population’s sexual orientation is homosexual, however, a small percentage is heterosexual (male and female). Early diagnosis of HIV directly correlates with an improved prognosis of the disease. Patient knowledge of his or her HIV status may substantially reduce his or her risk of transmitting the virus (VA Medical Center).

Expand and Advance Knowledge

This specialty is going to allow me to expand and advance my current knowledge which will allow me to improve the quality of care I will provide to the patients. In the nursing field, expanding knowledge is essential to make better decisions on patient care and the ability to communicate it with other healthcare personnel, thus strengthening the interprofessional communication and continuity of care. I will have direct interaction with patients who are living with this infectious disease. Working closely with other members of the interprofessional team such as the pharmacist, social workers, nutritionist, and psychiatrist, will enable identification of problems related with patient’s being compliant with their medication regimen. I will have direct access to the patient health records and the ability to assess what unforeseen issue may be preventing compliance with their medication regimen. The knowledge gained from working with patients that are HIV positive will help me to achieve better patient outcomes and optimize efficient delivery of care.

Well Defined Objective

According to Deborah Chatterjee (2017) learning objective is a description of what the learner must be able to do upon completion of an educational activity. A well-written learning objective outlines the knowledge, skills and or attitude the learners will gain from the educational activity and does so in a measurable way (p. 2). A learner must always incorporate the mneumonic SMART- Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound to assist in formulating a well-defined objective. One well-defined objective I plan to accomplish during my Practicum experience, which will help to facilitate my professional growth, is: Objective: Evaluate HIV patients’ compliance with monthly injectable antiviral medication versus oral antiviral medication. My objective aligns with Essential VII: Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes. In order to obtain compliance from this patient population which I will be working with, it is essential to incorporate interprofessional collaboration in order to achieve clinical prevention and health promotion goals that will assist in improving patient and population health outcomes (AACN, 2011, p. 22). Having an interprofessional team collaborating to address the problem with medication compliance is essential in analyzing the root cause of patient’s issues.

Nurse educators work in various types of environments, including preparing student nurses in the classroom setting to training staff in the emergency setting. Nurse educators would be responsible for orientation, lecture speakers and educational opportunities. Other responsibilities include serving as a mentor for staff members, collaborating with other educators to develop educational activities, identifying needed educational preparation, and establishing policies and procedures to assist with best practices (Duquesne University, 2018).

For my clinical experience, I have chosen to work in an urgent care. I was very excited about this setting as I have a degree in public health, and this setting will deal with patients’ social determinant of health issues as a result of the location of the clinic. Not only is the nurse educator’s role to teach staff members, but patients as well. Prevention begins with patient teaching. Arkansas State University (2018), explains that patient education is a critical part of the nurse’s job. Educating a patient empowers them to improve their health, as a result of them being involved in their own care. Benefits of patient education include prevention of medical conditions; decreasing noncompliance with taking medications, checking blood pressure and blood sugars; reducing hospital readmissions; and grasping the will to be independent and self-sufficient.

This setting will allow me to advance my knowledge in urgent care setting matters that affect patients, and how I would be able to educate staff on those important topics. I truly believe that one of the main ways that prevention occurs is through nutrition. One of my desires and goals to have in this setting is teaching patients as well as staff on the importance of nutrition, and educate them on how this can directly affect a patients health, emotionally and physically.

One of my goals will focus on teaching patients as well as staff on the correlation of a phenomenon called leaky gut and mental health. One study showed that individuals who suffered with suicidal behavior had increased markers of gut permeability (Ohlsson, et al., 2019). Leaky gut occurs when there is permeability in the junctions of the stomach lining, where food toxins “leak” through. This creates havoc in the gut leading to inflammation and “leaky brain”. I would like a SMART goal to be: Patient will be able to name three causes of leaky gut after the nurse educator educates them on what leaky gut is in their visit to the urgent care. The SMART goal for the staff would be: the staff member can name five treatment plans/interventions on how to heal a patients leaky gut after receiving an information session from the nurse educator.

Essential VIII of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing essentials is clinical prevention and population health for improving health. Health disparities are on the rise and disproportionately affect low-income communities, people of color, and others who are vulnerable. One of the ways for improving the health status of the United States population is through clinical prevention and population health activities. Over 50 percent of the preventable deaths in the United States are due to unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). Teaching patients and staff members the importance nutrition has on an individuals mental and physical health can help improve the health of the United States, one patient at a time.

Description of Selected Practicum Experience

The specialty area chosen for the practicum experience is palliative and hospice in medicine in the acute care setting. The nurse practitioner in this setting receives referrals for hospice and palliative care. The nurse practitioner works collaboratively with the intensivists and hospitalists to understand the patient’s prognosis. Once the nurse practitioner reviews the patient’s history and collaborates with the care team about the patient’s prognosis, she meets with the patients and/or families to discuss and establish goals of care. She works collaboratively with the patient’s care teams to help facilitate meetings with the patient/family care goals. They can range from initiating a hospice consult, initiating comfort measures, or initiating the compassionate extubating of a patient.

Practicum Experience Contributes to the Development of an Advanced Nurse Educator

This practicum experience will contribute to the development of an advanced nurse educator through multidisciplinary team collaboration. This experience will allow me to work with multiple individuals on the patient’s care team to establish the patient’s goals of care and work with the team of doctors and nurses to provide compassionate care at the end of life. This site will also offer the opportunity to apply the advanced health assessment course knowledge.

Learning Objective

Learning objectives help guide the learning activities by connecting the education to help the learner reach the desired outcomes (Chatterjee & Corral, 2017). Learning objectives are developed from the learning outcome or the goal of the educational activity. Learning objectives are things that a learner should be able to demonstrate in a short timeframe. The objectives ensure that the focus of the learning meets the learner’s needs, and the learner can demonstrate the knowledge they gain at the end of the course. The learning objectives are specific areas of focus that will help the students obtain the course outcomes (Bjerke & Renger, 2017). For a learning objective to be effective, it needs to follow the SMART method, which means the objective needs to be “specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely” (Chatterjee & Corral, 2017, p. 2).

One learning objective for the practicum experience is: Upon completing the practicum experience, the participant will be able to discuss the role of the palliative care nurse in the acute care setting.

Objective Aligns with The AACN MSN Essentials

The AACN MSN Essentials define the expertise, knowledge, and skills that all nurses prepared in master’s nursing programs need to acquire (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). The objective aligns with the AACN MSN Essential I: Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities because I will learn how to collaborate with multiple disciplines to care for the patient and the patient’s families during the time spent with the nurse practitioner. By learning the nurse practitioner’s role as the palliative care nurse in the acute care setting, I will be able to understand better how she uses clinical reasoning to care for patients who have uncertain clinical prognoses and how to incorporate concerns of family, significant others, and communities into the design and delivery of care (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011).

TG1.1 Defining Variables

Classifying Variables by Type

Tableau infers three attributes of a column from the data that a column contains. Tableau assigns a data role to each column, initially considering any column that contains categorical data to be a Dimension and any column that contains numerical data to be a Measure. The data role of the column, in turn, affects how Tableau processes the column data as well as which choices Tableau presents in the Show Me visualization gallery (see Chapter 2).

Tableau also classifies a column as either having discrete or continuous data. Tableau uses the terms discrete and continuous in the sense that this chapter defines, except that Tableau considers all categorical data as discrete data, too. Tableau colors a column name green if the column contains continuous data and colors a column name blue if the column contains discrete data.

Tableau also determines whether the data type in the column is one of several data types. In the Data tab (shown below), Tableau displays a hashtag icon (#) before the names of columns that contain whole or decimal numbers, displays an Abc icon before the names of columns that contain alphanumeric data, and displays a calendar icon before the names of columns that contain date or date and time data. Tableau precedes a data type icon with an equals sign if the column contains the results of a calculation or represents data copied from another column. Tableau presents a Dimension or Measure name in italics if the name represents a filtered set. In the illustration below, Number of Records in the Measures list is a calculation that is also a filtered set.

To change the data role assigned to a column, right-click the column name and select Convert to Dimension or Convert to Measure from the shortcut menu. To change the assignment of discrete or continuous to a column, right-click the column name and select Convert to Continuous or Convert to Discrete from the shortcut menu. To change the assigned data type, right-click the column name and select Change Data Type and then select the appropriate choice from the shortcut menu.

To change the data role assigned to a column, right-click the column name and select Convert to Dimension or Convert to Measure from the shortcut menu. To change the assignment of discrete or continuous to a column, right-click the column name and select Convert to Continuous or Convert to Discrete from the shortcut menu. To change the assigned data type, right-click the column name and select Change Data Type and then select the appropriate choice from the shortcut menu.

In the preceding illustration at left, Tableau has classified Region Code as a continuous (green) measure that has whole or decimal number data. Region Code is a recoding of Region that uses the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 4 to replace categorical values. Therefore, Region Code should be a Dimension that contains discrete, alphanumeric data. For the column’s shortcut menu, the three right-click selections Convert to Dimension, Convert to Discrete, and Change Data Type ➔ String would be necessary to proper reclassify Region Code. (“String” is the Tableau term for alphanumeric data.)

TG1.4 Data Cleaning

Use the Data Interpreter.

For certain types of structured data, such as Excel worksheets and Google sheets, Tableau can apply its Data Interpreter procedure to examine data for common types of error. For an Excel workbook, the interpreter will not only import corrected values but insert a series of worksheets that document its work into the workbook that is being used.

To use the interpreter, check Use Data Interpreter in the left panel of a Data Source display (shown below left). The panel display changes to Cleaned with Data Interpreter (shown below right), when the data cleaning finishes and Tableau has imported the data to be analyzed (in the illustration, the data from the Data worksheet of the Retirement Funds Excel workbook.)
