For this assignment, you will be analyzing the excerpts of Bartolomé de las Casas’s “A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies” and Bernardino de Sahagún’s “A General History of New Spain” in Latin American Voices, chapter 1. (In addition to carefully reading these accounts, you’ll also want to read Chasteen’s introduction to the chapter and his introduction to each excerpt. Let me know if you need copies of the documents)

As you read the accounts, note when each author is:

Describing a change – what has changed in Taíno (Las Casas) or Nahua/Mexica (Sahagún) society due to the encounter with the Spanish?

Describing a continuity – what has remained the same, or generally unchanged, in Taíno or Nahua/Mexica society? 

Providing context – both authors are writing primarily for an audience that won’t visit Hispaniola or Mexico. What context or explanations are they providing to their readership?

Delivering content – what information about events, people, ideas, or places are the authors providing? Why might they be focusing on this content in particular? 

What you’ll be submitting:

For this assignment, you’ll be filling out a table of examples with quotes and page numbers. After completing the table, you’ll write a short reflection (150-250 words) comparing and contrasting Las Casas and Sahagún’s accounts, including but not limited to their use of Native sources and informants, their views of Spanish behavior, and their authorial approaches or styles in presenting evidence and constructing an argument.

I do believe that the responsibilities influence live donor rates. Live renal donors are preferred but challenging to find for many reasons. Many people do not know or understand the benefits. Those who need the organ may not know how to ask or know the resources to begin the process. A renal transplant nurse coordinator’s responsibilities are coordinating the evaluation and preparation of patients and management of patients after transplant. (University, Transplantation Nursing Career Guide) The care of a patient before and after a transplant is a critical step in any process related to patient care. It sets the standard for future patients. Suppose one patient has an excellent experience and feels supported, encouraged, and educated throughout the process. In that case, they are more likely to recommend the procedure to those to whom it applies. 

As a veteran, the topic of veteran suicide is near to my heart. The VA conducts the most extensive suicide analysis yearly and enables the VA to provide safe and ethical care, reporting measures, and help to those at risk. (Va.gov 2018) The VA offers self-help resources, a 24/7 phone line, and mobile apps to support wellness. According to the data, veteran suicide rates have dropped from 22 a day to 17, and although that is still a high number, it shows that something is working and the resources available are helpful. (OAS, 2022)                                   

Creating a researchable question starts with PICO: population, intervention, control, and outcome. This strategy helps build the framework for the question.

Population: Patient or problem

Intervention: treatments or tests

Control: comparing treatments and standards of care

Outcome: the result

It is essential to ask the quality type of questions that insight thought and strive to make a difference to the population. Organization is vital in developing a question. It gives room for the researcher to figure out what needs to be done and the time frame in which it needs to be completed and ensure the funding is available.

Research Question

How, if at all, are the timing and location of suicide prevention appointments linked to veterans‘ suicide rates?

When it comes to the process of developing a researchable topic you have to first pick a topic that you are interested in, it is  relevant to the assignment and significant enough to warrant research.  Once you have a general topic in mind, it is important to refine your focus until you have a manageable topic. The research question should be specific and not too broad. Background information identifies and describes the history and nature of a well-defined research problem with reference to the existing literature(Library, 2021). The background information should indicate the root of the problem being studied, appropriate context of the problem in relation to theory, research, and/or practice, its scope, and the extent to which previous studies have successfully investigated the problem, noting, in particular, where gaps exist that your study attempts to address(Library, 2021).

The above research question Is specifically asking for the suicide rate for veterans. This question has a specific topic and problem. The background evidence and problem is suicide amongst veterans and what’s linked to it. This type of research will require hands on research including speaking with veterans that have attempted suicide and also families of veterans that have committed suicide. Knowing their demographics and percentage of appointments made for veterans to discuss suicide prevention will also be beneficial to the research.

How to Analyze a Case Study

Knowing how to analyze a case will help you attack virtually any business problem.

A case study helps students learn by immersing them in a real-world business scenario where they can act as problem-solvers and decision-makers. The case presents facts about a particular organization or decision. Students are asked to analyze the case by focusing on the most important facts and using this information to determine the opportunities and problems facing that organization, the people within the organization or decision. Students are then asked to identify alternative courses of action to deal with the problems or decision they identify.

A case study analysis must not merely summarize the case. It should identify key issues and problems, outline and assess alternative courses of action, and draw appropriate conclusions. The case study analysis can be broken down into the following steps (FICER):

Facts- select the most important facts surrounding the case.

Issues-identify the most important issues in the case

Courses of action-Specify alternative courses of action.

Evaluate- each course of action.

Recommend- the best course of action.

Let’s look at what each step involves.

Identify the most important facts surrounding the case.
Read the case several times to become familiar with the information it contains. Pay attention to the information in any accompanying exhibits, tables, or figures. Many case scenarios, as in real life, present a great deal of detailed information. Some of these facts are more relevant than others for problem identification. One can assume the facts and figures in the case are true, but statements, judgments, or decisions made by individuals should be questioned. Underline and then list the most important facts and figures that would help you define the central problem or issue. If key facts and numbers are not available, you can make assumptions, but these assumptions should be reasonable given the situation. The “correctness” of your conclusions may depend on the assumptions you make.

Identify the key issue or issues.
Use the facts provided by the case to identify the key issue or issues (or decision) facing the person(s) or organization. Many cases present multiple issues or problems. Identify the most important and separate them from more trivial issues. State the major problem or challenge facing the company or person(s). You should be able to describe the problem or challenge in one or two sentences. You should be able to explain how this problem affects the strategy or performance of the organization or person(s). You will need to explain why the problem occurred.

Specify alternative courses of action.
List the courses of action the company or person(s) can take to solve its problem or meet the challenge it faces. For instance, for information system-related problems, do these alternatives require a new information system or the modification of an existing system? Are new technologies, business processes, organizational structures, or management behavior required? What changes to organizational processes would be required by each alternative? What management policy would be required to implement each alternative?

Remember, there is a difference between what an organization “should do” and what that organization actually “can do”. Some solutions are too expensive or operationally difficult to implement, and you should avoid solutions that are beyond the organization’s resources. Identify the constraints that will limit the solutions available. Is each alternative executable given these constraints? Be practical in your approach to selecting courses of action.

Creating courses of action requires thinking outside the box. To do this think about all the people (company as well) involved in the action, what stake they may have in the action, and how best to meet their objectives. Sometimes “walking around in everyone’s shoes” will give you a new insight to the situation or issue and thus lead to a new course of action.

Evaluate each course of action.
Evaluate each alternative using the facts and issues you identified earlier, given the conditions and information available. Identify the costs and benefits of each alternative. Ask yourself “what would be the likely outcome of this course of action? State the risks as well as the rewards associated with each course of action. Is your recommendation feasible from a technical, operational, and financial standpoint? Be sure to state any assumptions on which you have based your decision.

Recommend the best course of action.
State your choice for the best course of action and provide a detailed explanation of why you made this selection. You may also want to provide an explanation of why other alternatives were not selected. Your final recommendation should flow logically from the rest of your case analysis and should clearly specify what assumptions were used to shape your conclusion. There is often no single “right” answer, and each option is likely to have risks as well as rewards.
