INTRODUCTION
English banking and financial services company Standard Chartered plc is based in London, England. At least 87,000 individuals are employed over more than 1,200 locations and outlets, including subsidiaries and affiliate companies. Consumer, business and financial and treasury services for institutions are all provided by this global bank. Even though it is based in the United Kingdom, it does not offer retail banking, and its earnings come mainly from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is part of the FTSE 100 index. OTC Markets Group Pink and OTC Markets Group Pink have secondary listings. Standard Chartered has been operating in the United Kingdom since 1853, making it one of the oldest banking institutions in the country. Standard Chartered is one of the central banks in the United Kingdom and is monitored by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority. Having been in business for more than 160 years, Standard Chartered has experienced and withstood all the major financial crises.
In banking, risk management is a critical component. Banks, like any other firm, face a variety of hazards. However, given the importance of the banking sector and the government’s stake in risk management, the risks weigh heavier on the banking sector than on most other industries. A bank may face various risks, and it is critical to understand how banks manage risk. Risks associated with credit, markets, operations, reputation, and liquidity.
Banks often make loans. Credit risk is the risk that a loan recipient may not be able to pay back the money they borrowed. This might cause cash flow problems, increased collection costs, and other issues. Market risk is the danger of the loss of value of an investment owing to market factors such as a downturn. This risk is also known as systemic risk. Operational risks are possible sources of loss resulting from any operational event, such as inadequately trained staff, a technical malfunction, or information theft. When a news article comes about a bank’s leadership is corrupt, the bank’s reputation suffers. This could harm their customer relationships, cause a drop in share price, and give competitors competitive advantage. Finally, liquidity risk refers to a bank being unable to repay its creditors on time It was during the financial crisis of 2008 when banks lost money on mortgage defaults, interbank lending halted, and credit to people and businesses dried up.
Banks must prioritize risk management to remain on top of, and ahead of the myriad significant risks, they confront daily. Bank risk management extends well beyond compliance, as banks must be on the watch for strategic, operational, pricing, liquidity, and reputational risk. Keeping track of these risks requires a solid and adaptable bank risk management programme. Since 2011, the number of specific regulatory changes that financial institutions and banks must watch worldwide has quadrupled. There are millions of proposed regulations and enforcement actions that firms must comply with across numerous jurisdictions. This necessitates that regulatory change management is a significant component inside any bank’s risk management programme. Regulatory change management may be defined as “handling regulatory, policy, and other procedures pertaining to your organization for your industry.” Regulatory compliance may be a tedious and expensive undertaking for financial institutions; thus, companies must have the suitable systems in place to detect changes to current rules as well as new regulations that influence the organization’s capacity to fulfil goals. It is also critical that firms be aware of any possible repercussions or fines if they fail to comply with the regulations. Once a regulation modification has been made, companies must analyze how they will apply the changes to their present policies, practices, and training sessions. As improvements are implemented, firms should begin measuring compliance with the amended legislation.
A bank’s optimal risk management strategy reveals key dependencies and control efficacy, showing important dependencies and control effectiveness. With a clear strategy in place, banks should be able to properly manage time and resources. Size, brand, market share, and many other factors influence a bank’s risk management strategy. To that end, all strategies should be consistent and executable. A typical risk management strategy involves identifying the fundamental cause of the risk, collecting and analyzing data to assess the risk, and prioritizing repair actions. Then, risk mitigation should be implemented to lower risk exposure and threat probability. Top risks and issues must be regularly addressed to keep the bank safe. Then monitor the hazards. Testing, metric collecting, and incident resolution should be continuous and proactive to ensure the controls are working. A link between risks, business units, and mitigation actions should be developed to identify upstream and downstream dependencies, systemic risks, and build centralized controls. Finally, a report detailing the risk management program’s progress should be created.
It was during the financial crisis of 2008 when banks lost money on mortgage defaults, interbank lending halted, and credit to people and businesses dried up. The financial crisis had a long-term influence on banking, resulting in a slew of new regulations throughout the globe. Before the financial crisis struck in 2008, rules implemented in the United States had pushed the banking system to enable more customers to own houses. Financial institutions throughout the globe purchased collateralized debt obligations, which were created by bundling subprime mortgage loans into a single security. As a result of the financial crisis, banks ceased lending to one another, making it more difficult for individuals and companies alike to get credit. To prevent another financial crisis after the global financial crisis of 2008, the Basel Committee proposed stricter capital and liquidity criteria for the world’s banks. After the G-20 approved the changes, known as Basel III, in November 2010, member states were left with implementing the rules in their countries (The Investopedia Team, 2021). Therefore, it is evident that some banks had not implemented adequate risk management plans and therefore were negatively affected by the crisis.
Unlike other banks that closed due to the crisis, Standard Chartered bank prevailed. This was attributed to their deep grasp on banking fundamentals: liquidity, capital, risk, and cost management. Although the external business climate was tough, the Group announced good financial achievements in 2008, measured by a 26% increase in Group income to over $14 billion and a 13% increase in operating profit to $4.6 billion. The Group further said that the Group’s foundations were in outstanding shape. In December, a successful rights offering bolstered the company’s financial condition. In addition to the bank’s high liquidity, which was bolstered by a steady influx of deposits, the group’s financials were outstanding, and it was clear what risks and expenditures it faced.
As a consequence of smart acquisitions, the bank enjoyed a superior geographic and product position. In 2009, they were well-equipped to deal with the escalating economic crisis. Bank’s end-of-year accomplishments included a solid operating margin delivered in the face of unexpected economic turmoil, the ability to remain open for business to customers, the ability to enhance their capital base through an issuance of shares in December 2008 and a conservative attitude to risk management, which helped minimize the influence of the sub-prime crisis (Standard Chartered, 2009).
In July 1997, the value of the Thai baht plummeted, sparking the onset of the Asian financial crisis. East and Southeast Asia were next in line. The financial crisis has affected the value of currencies, stock markets, and other assets in various Southeast Asian countries. Consequently, currency pegs harmed export growth to the US dollar’s value. Due to a sudden drop in exports and foreign investment, asset values began to decline. Fearful foreign investors began to withdraw their money. Due to the large-scale flight of capital, the currencies of Asia’s nations have seen their value fall. A lack of foreign money meant the Thai government had no choice but to float the baht the foreign currency market rate. In the wake of this, the value of the Thai baht dropped nearly immediately. Within a short time, the remainder of Asia was hit with a similar situation.
After the financial crisis, several nations realized the need increase their foreign exchange reserves in order to shield themselves against shocks from outside. Economic restructuring and currency weakening in many Asian nations led to a current account surplus. The extra money might be used to boost the country’s foreign exchange reserves. In the wake of the Asian Financial Crisis, many people began to question the government’s role in the market. Libertarians favour capitalism based on free markets. Government intervention and crony capitalism were seen as the leading causes of the financial catastrophe by many. A primary goal of the IMF’s structural adjustment programmes and those of other international lenders was to reduce ties between governments and financial markets and promote neoliberalism (Corporate Finance Institute, n.d.).
The crisis had devastating effects on the performance of the bank. Canada’s Scotiabank Group stated that it had reached a deal to purchase Standard Chartered Bank’s Mocatta Bullion and Base Metals on October 1, 1997. One hundred eighty individuals were working for Mocatta at the purchase, and ten offices across the globe and around 3,000 customers. The company held a stake in the New York State gold and silver depository Iron Mountain. The transaction was completed on December 1, 1997, and the Mocatta activities were incorporated into Scotia Capital Markets to establish ScotiaMocatta. Today, ScotiaMocatta contributes to making Scotiabank Group one of the world’s top bullion and metal trading banks (Scotiabank, 2019). Standard Chartered’s Asian investment banking businesses could not be revived no matter how hard they tried. They were shut down by the bank in 2000. Had effective risk management been adopted before the crisis, the bank’s investments would have survived.
The banking industry was severely impacted by COVID-19. Firms that had gone out of business could not repay loans because they had lost income. For the same reason, families whose members had been laid off or furloughed had less money to pay back debts. If repayment ability was permanently reduced, this might have had severe effects on earnings and bank capital and income loss. Second, banks suffered losses as the value of bonds and other traded financial products dropped. When there was no or limited income, businesses needed more cash flow to cover their expenses even if they didn’t have any. Borrowers had drawn down credit lines due to this increased demand. Fourth, banks had to deal with weaker non-interest income as demand for their various services decreased (Economics Observatory, 2020).
The bank’s annual reports in 2020, when the pandemic hit, indicated a decrease in profit. Operating income was down 3% and 2% on a constant currency basis in constant currency terms. Excluding the UK bank charge, operating costs, decreased by either 2% or 1% in currency – neutral terms. At the same time, credit impairment rose by $1388 million to $2294 million, while another $15 million loss was offset by a $15 million gain primarily due to the recovery of previously bad loans and a decrease in associate and collaborative earnings of 35 percent to $164 million (Standard Chartered, 2022).
Conclusion
Banks need to adopt effective risk management strategies to mitigate risk and enhance performance. Some crises can be foreseen and countered before they occur with an effective risk management plan. Risk management, therefore, enhances the performance of banks. Financial crises lead to underperformance of banks and even closure. Some banks merge to survive. Therefore, adopting an effective risk management plan is necessary for any bank that wants to survive and stay profitable. Even though adopting a risk management plan is accompanied by some costs, it is the best option for any bank.

report on a type of aircraft compare and contrast essay help: compare and contrast essay help
report on a type of aircraftThe report will be 2 (FULL) pages, APA format, 12pt font, double spaced, 1” margins. You might think I’m getting oddly specific here but if I don’t include this type of thing then some joker will try to cut the paper as short as possible. You will also have a title page with a picture of the aircraft, this is not included in you 2-page minimum. Remember, the 2-page minimum is exactly that, a minimum. If you have good information then there’s no problem with going longer. This is an opportunity to focus on one particular aircraft, so choose an aircraft- any aircraft within the scope of this class- and write about it. The sort of information to include is;What is its role, range, payload, design features, power plant, type of construction, materials used in construction? Where is it built, how many are flying, and who operates them? What design features deal with stability, drag, operating cost, and emergency features? The type of aircraft is : DA40 Diamond Aircraft.
