The abbreviation LGBT stands for the definition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and 

Transgender is a sexual condition that people are associated with in their life, which is different from most people in society. The movement was majorly formed to protect the welfare of the 

people with the above highlighted sexual conditions in the community; this was meant to 

advocate for their full acceptance and appreciation in the community in which 

they lived. Almeida, J., Johnson, R. M., Corliss, H. L., Molnar, B. E., & Azrael, 

D. (2009). This is since most of them are discriminated against in their lives; due to the social and cultural norms associated with the 

societies in which they live. The LGBT movement started as early as the 91st century 

BCE, and over time, it has continued to grow in advocacy and level of operative 

activities in which its members engage themselves.

The members of the LGBT include lesbians, the gays, bisexuals, and transgender 

people in society, as well as organizations that are for the idea of doing 

away with any form of discrimination against the LGBT in society. In the light of the nature 

of the membership of the LGBT, there is the consideration of initiation, impetus, and 

resistance. Almeida, J., Johnson, R. M., Corliss, H. L., Molnar, B. E., & Azrael, D. 

(2009). Initiation is the activity of incorporating an individual into a group of people with some similar underlying characteristic; the momentum is the force that facilitates 

the happening of some action or perception in society and resistance is the 

resistance to comply with or accept something in the community. All of the above terms are 

associated with LGBT initiation, whereby people with the same sexual orientation are 

incorporated into the LGBT movement; impetus, whereby the LGBT movement coerces 

society to accept the various sexual conditions. Moreover, resistance, whereby the people 

in the community are against the norms of the LGBT in their lives.

          Through their activities, the LGBT movement is considered successful for various reasons. First and foremost, through its educative motive to the society, the people with different sexual conditions have been accepted as part and parcel of society, which is seen through the change in legislation in various countries to allow marriage and association with the people without any form of boundaries. Bilodeau, B. L., & Renn, K. A. (2005). Moreover, there is the removal of the multiple misconceptions in society about people with different sexual conditions, enabling their easy association with people due to reduced prejudice. In brief, the significant achievement of the LGBT has been the fight for the accommodation of their members in society, despite the cultural and social perspectives associated with them; to a large extent, it has been achieved in many countries. Renn, K. A. (2010). Concerning the LGBT, the theory that applies to its state of activities is the functionalism theory, whereby there is the perspective that society is a system of various joint parts that work in unison to maintain a state of balance in the course of the multiple activities that they engage themselves with. Considering the LGBT, society is composed of people with different sexual conditions, who should be characterized by living in harmony through the activities they engage with. This is the primary idea of LGBT, which is towards enhancing the accommodation of all people in society despite their differences. This underlines the significance of LGBT in society, as it is towards the total of all people despite their slight differences. 

 

Challenges LGBTQ Students Face in Schools:

1. Whether to “come out” in class, publicly during class participation or privately 

in-class assignments.

2. When outside of class, whether to acknowledge or hide one’s sexual orientation or gender identity when conversing with fellow students, teachers, counselors, and staff.

3. How to respond when a fellow student, instructor, counselor, or staff automatically assumes that one is heterosexual and engages in “heterosexual talk” (

4. How to respond when one hears disparaging, anti-LGBTQ (i.e., homophobic) remarks from fellow students, teachers, counselors, and staff, whether the comments are made innocently, jokingly, or maliciously.

5. How to respond when a fellow student, teacher, counselor, or staff learns about the LGBTQ student’s sexual orientation/gender identity and begins to treat the student “differently” (i.e., more reserved and distant, more impatient and dismissive, or more marginalizing and judgmental).

6. How to respond when someone learns about the LGBTQ student’s sexual orientation/gender identity begins to make negative stereotypical assumptions or becomes hostile. (Relatedly, when being disparaged or bullied for one’s sexual orientation/gender identity, whether to report the incident to campus authorities and concern over whether school officials will investigate and take the incident seriously.)

7. When a new spiritual friendship forms, there is inner conflict over whether to “come out” to the new friend and anxiety over how the new acquaintance might respond.

Teachers can help LGBTQ students as :

1. Post-Safe Space Signs

You can designate your classroom a “safe zone” through stickers or posters on your classroom door. This lets students know you’re LGBTQ-friendly and are willing to challenge anti-LGBTQ language or harassment. In addition, the AFT states that safe zone stickers let students know that teachers, counselors, and administrators are “open to discussion of LGBTQ issues in the context of classwork or just in conversation.”

2. Start an LGBTQ Organization at Your School

The AFT points out that school-based extracurricular groups have the “potential to shape school climate, address inequality, and affect student performance.” LGBTQ student organizations show great promise in “reducing discrimination against LGBTQ students, promoting their well-being, and fostering safe and affirming school environments.” These groups provide support for LGBTQ students, and they can help create awareness in schools and help to counteract discrimination. They can also ensure that school policies and curricula are inclusive. Offering to start such a group at your school or becoming an advisor for an existing one can help ensure that students have positive experiences at school.

3. Stand Up Against Homophobia

GLSEN reports that research has shown that “LGBTQ youth face bullying at significantly higher rates than their peers, and the consequences, such as increased rates of suicide, can be heartbreaking.”

Educators can help change that. GLSEN provides lesson plans on bullying, bias, and diversity that teachers can use to help educate their students. Students of all ages sometimes use homophobic words or expressions in the classroom. Teachers need to let students know that such speech is unacceptable. Teaching Tolerance provides an activity guide to help teachers handle remarks like this in the school.

4. Integrate LGBTQ Topics into the Curriculum

The Human Rights Campaign suggests teachers integrate LGBTQ people and topics into the classroom. When assigning issues for science, history, and art, including LGBTQ people like Harvey Milk (politician) or Alan Turing (computer scientist). GLSEN also provides an LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum so that students can see themselves in their lessons and so all students can have an authentic understanding of the world around them.

Another critical feature of doing good social work is to understand the way our own family history has impacted us.  This assignment is designed to help you explore your own family influences, while also developing skills for creating and assessing genograms.  This is a multi-step process:
Step 1– Throughout the early part of the semester, gather information from your family members about four generations of your family (parents, grandparents, great grandparents; their siblings and their families, etc.).  It is understandable that there may be less information about older generations but do your best to get what information you can. More information will help you to see intergenerational patterns.
You will need to gather basic information on the family members, such as names, ages, year of death if deceased, education, occupation, notable characteristics, addictions, etc.
You should also collect information about relationship dynamics (e.g. divorces, relationship styles/ parent –child interactional styles), family stressors, as well as family accomplishments and strengths.
Ethnicity and cultural information is important to include as well. If some family members are immigrants, indicate from what country and the year of immigration.  Strengths as well as challenges should be included.
If one has been adopted or in foster care, use the family you identify with most clearly as your family of origin (where you know more of the people and their stories).  You will indicate existence of other families as ‘bubbles’ next to the symbol for you. (If you have multiple foster families or other circumstances, feel free to talk with your instructor about how to focus your genogram.)

Step 3– During class, we will work in dyads to help each other recognize themes/trends/dynamics in one another’s genograms. While interviewing one another, try to incorporate new information into the genogram that arises from your discussion.  Your sensitive use of questions and help with guiding analysis of your partner’s genogram is expected and confidentiality must be strictly observed. You will only share your information with the partner in class, NOT the whole class.
Step 4– The final “project” is due on____(week 12):  It consists of the fully delineated genogram (it should be rich with information) as well as a 7-10 page paper identifying the trends and patterns you have been able to identify in your genogram.  If you bring your genogram to class rolled up, put your first name on the outside of the tube. Identification of psychosocial traits and patterns is the main focus of this section.  What are the strongest or most prevalent traits and patterns you see? that they do not have to participate. They will receive no benefit from participating, but they
will help you earn points in your methods class. Get their informed consent verbally.
 
B). Have them read the instructions for the study on the top of the first survey page. Answer
any questions they may have
 
C). Have them complete Part One. For this portion of the survey, participants will provide
their demographic data. If they are uncomfortable giving some of this information, they do
not have to provide it.
 
D). Make sure they read the instructions at the bottom of the first page. It is important that
they know that most participants complete the anagram task within 30 seconds. Let them
know that you will time them to see how long it takes them to solve the anagrams. Use a
watch (or the stopwatch on your i-phone!) to measure their time in Part Two.
 
E). The anagram task is in Part Two. One version of this task is very easy (It has the words
LEMON, TAB, and CINERAMA, which can easily be rearranged to spell MELON, BAT,
and AMERICAN. You will see the letter E at the bottom of the page, designating the easy
condition). Another version of this task is moderately difficult (It has the letter M on the
bottom of the page, and has the words LEMON, WHIRL, and CINERAMA. Both LEMON
and CINERAMA can be rearranged, but WHIRL is impossible to rearrange). Finally, the
hard version (denoted H) has the words WHIRL, ORANGE, and CINERAMA, and only the
last word can be rearranged. As you time participants, you may see those in the moderate and
hard group having a hard time. Keep timing until they tell you they give up. For all three
conditions, write down how long it took them to complete the task on the bottom of the page.
 
NOTE: This study has one independent variable (Task Difficulty) with three levels (easy,
moderate, and hard). We may also look at gender as a second independent variable with
two levels (male or female), which would make it a 3 X 2 design. Your dependent
variables are in Part Two is a). whether they complete the third word (CINERAMA)
successfully, and b). their time to complete the task. Make sure to write down their time
(in seconds).
F). Finally, have them complete Part Three. Our remaining four dependent variables are in
this section (ease of the task personally, ease for others, frustration, and ideas about whether
it can be done in 30 seconds). Once they complete this part, debrief them on the study design.
For this debriefing, tell them we are conducting a study on learned helplessness. Tell them
that the word CINERAMA appears on all versions of the survey, and can be turned into
AMERICAN, but that some people got words that cannot be rearranged (like WHIRL and
ORANGE). Most will probably find this experiment funny, but let them know that the study
in no way says anything about their intelligence level with regard to anagrams.
 
Tell them your two hypotheses:
 
First, we predict that people who are in the hard condition will be less likely to correctly
rearrange the word CINERAMA to spell AMERICAN. Those in the moderate group
should be able to spell AMERICAN a little more frequently (but not always), while
almost all of the people in the easy group should be able to spell AMERICAN. This is
because those in the hard and moderate groups are impacted by learned helplessness –
failure on previous words will make them give up on later words, even if those later
words can be solved.
 
Second, we predict that people in the hard condition will find the task hard personally,
think most other people will find the task to be hard, will be most frustrated with the task,
and will think almost no one will be able to complete it within 30 seconds. Those in the
easy condition should fall at the other extreme: find it easy personally, think others will
find it easy, will show little frustration, and will expect most people to complete the task
within 30 seconds. Those in the moderate group should fall between those two groups.
 
2). Hold onto your surveys, as you will need them for your lab. You will enter data into SPSS
and analyze it with your lab instructor. Each student is responsible for collecting data from three
participants (one participant for each level of Task Difficulty – easy, moderate, and hard).

For example, specific symptoms such as neurocognitive impairments, social problems, and illusions may exist in schizophrenic clients, but are also contributing symptoms for other psychotic disorders.
