Uniforms in both current times and ancient world have been widely used in different areas as well as fields such as religious, professional and educational. They are mainly used to distinguish the relevant group to their specific characteristics for example; the military uses uniforms to distinguish them from civilians. The current generation has seen the adoption of uniforms in many sectors including the military, medicine institutions, private companies as well as other organizations. Schools have not been left out either.

Establishing an identity

Uniforms play a very key role in learning institutions as they mark each institution. This is to say that the use of uniforms helps in establishing an identity for every institution. Students can be easily identified from their uniform. This not only makes the institution proud but also acts as a safety precaution. In case of any disaster, accident or unrest of any kind, people can always identify the victim as a student of the school whose uniform he or she is wearing. Identity is very important when it comes to communities; it enhances originality and helps in promoting the institution based on its beliefs, culture and performance (Avvisati & Francesco, 2014). The students or members of the institution feel obliged to do exceptionally well so s to maintain the status quo of their institution. In inter institutional activities, the uniforms are also important in identifying the specific students of every institution and this reduces the work load on teachers who at times end up having to spend a considerable amount of time trying to locate their students from the crowds.

Maintaining culture

Uniforms also promote the culture and standards of an institution. Institutions whether professional, religious or educational, use uniforms to identify their culture. Every community of people normally has a distinct characteristic or set of values that are unique to them from the pother communities. The use of uniform helps promotes the culture of the institutions that are associated with that uniform. For instance, paramedics wear uniforms to distinguish them from other people so that in case of a disaster, they are allowed to access the place and lend a helping hand. It is also easy to identify the military from civilians, students from outsiders, doctors and nurses from the public and amongst themselves and in many other ways that everybody has in one time of their lives or more experienced (Steinfeldt & Jesse, 2013).

Promoting equality

The use of uniforms promotes equality among the students. It makes them all equal because they are not judged based on how cheap or expensive their outfits are, but at which school’s uniform they are wearing. This is a standardization tactic that institutions use to level the ground and make the environment fit and friendly for each other. The use of uniforms helps the administration to concentrate on more important issues of academic nature than to spend important time resolving discrimination cases. This is because if individuals are left to choose what to wear, chances are high that some will feel superior hence making the not so lucky in fashion look inferior and this could lead to discrimination. In class set up, the students wear same color, design, and prints whether they’re bright, dumb, Christian, Muslim, black, white or any other cultural-social set up (Happel & Alison, 2013). This increases concentration in lessons as there are no disruptions from flashy clothes, interesting designs or accessories. Everyone resembles the other and this promotes equality among students from all walks of life.

Standardization tool

Uniforms act as standardization tools also which distinguishes students from the members of staff. It is not always to distinguish the different groups of people within an institution since the age factor does not always apply in all institutions. So as to know who is a teacher and who is a student, uniforms are used to mark the students so that it may be easy to note the difference. The use of uniforms has been seen to help in maintaining discipline in schools as well. Students do not feel too motivated to act crazy when they’re in uniform. They always feel like they are being watched at all times and this psychological games helps in keeping them in check and away from bad behaviors. Again, keeping students in uniforms helps in discouraging the student-teacher relationships which sometimes end up with adverse effects to the two parties involved. It is easy to distinguish a teacher from a student so this makes it extremely difficult for them to talk or meet exclusively within the institution without raising suspicion from fellow teachers and students.

Promoting decency

They are also able to maintain decency in uniforms he way they dress up as the uniform is normally standard across the whole school. This is because the unregulated dress code is completely liberal and may not be influenced by the school authority. To discourage the unpleasant dressing in school, uniforms are preferred as they are designed to fit perfectly in the setting and have little if any room for modification. Suggestive, highly revealing clothes are avoided and in the case of male students, their hygiene is closely monitored to ensure that they only wear tidy, smart clothes to match up the institutions status claim. The media influence would make students dress up to the extremes but with uniforms on, there is always a limit. It is important to regulate the clothes worn in school as a way of preparing the students to be responsible when they are done with their education. It improves their subordination to staff members hence maintaining discipline (Karl, Katherine Leda McIntyre Hall & Joy Peluchette, 2013).

Encouraging neatness

Finally, uniforms are not punitive tools but items of identity and are a good way to remind students of where they are, and what is expected of them whenever they’re there, besides, people look cute in them too. Uniforms are basically beautiful when students or workers wear them. The environment on which they operate stays interesting and beautiful. The matching colors and design are just so beautiful to look at especially in groups. They make the students look neat, young and pretty. Students are constantly reminded of the core reason of their stay in school and this encourages them to work harder in their academic work. When students do not wear uniforms, it is possible that the fancy clothes will distract them as well as their teachers and in this way the quality of learning will be considerably reduced.

Reservations to use of uniforms

On a different note, there are people who feel that uniforms should not be worn because with the argument that every specific person has a right to express themselves socially, physically and verbally and this right extends to the way they dress. Their argument is that forcing student to wear uniforms is restrictive and prevents them from expressing themselves through style, fashion and taste. Others feel that their children look ugly in uniforms because some of the uniforms are not so attractive, uncomfortable and should be abolished to allow students to wear what they feel comfortable in. members of some religious communities also feel that making students wear uniforms makes them miss their religious obligations as some religions require the members to dress up in a certain manner. Their ideology is that the freedom of worship is denied by enforcing the use of uniforms in the institutions. For instance, Muslim girls are required by their religion to wear a religious gown known as the hijab at all times. It is however difficult for learning institutions to allow a few members of the students’ body from a certain religion to ignore the set rules and regulations in the name of honoring their religions because other students from other religions or groups of interest may decide to follow suit and wear civilian clothes in the institution (Happel & Alison, 2013).

Looking at all the factor, it is clear that the use of uniforms has more positive benefits than what critics would call negative implications. Uniforms are seen to encourage the best practices as well as keep students in check while they concentrate in studies. A good example why uniforms are a good policy is that even the major sectors that work in the interest of the citizens, use uniforms. Members of the defense forces from all the categories are known to stay in military uniforms at all times. Doctors as well and members of staff in the health sector have uniforms that distinguish them from the rest of the people (Karl, Katherine Leda McIntyre Hall & Joy Peluchette, 2013). This is very important and essential to know that uniforms play a very useful role and should be encouraged. There can be provisions for the important cases that need to be addressed like the case of religion. Sufficient provisions can be made especially during admission so that when someone signs up, they very well know that they will be required to abide by the policies. It is therefore clearly important to note that the use of uniforms has more benefits than the reverse.
