In this short writing of only 1-2 two-pages double spaced, I want you to first read Washington
Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Then, I want you to respond to either story related to the prompt I am about to provide you. Thus,
you only have to write about “Rip Van Winkle” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
I am looking at least for a full page in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced. Include
an MLA header in the top left corner (name, professor’s name, class name, date) and page numbers or an
MLA header (last name and page numbers). Also, make sure to include a creative title (not just the
name of the assignment). If you are uncertain how to do this, go to this website and browse how to
format it: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html.
In Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” he addresses
darker and supernatural themes. Many readers often view these short stories as horror because they
conform to many aspects of the genre; however, it is more accurate to describe these stories as “gothic.”
Rather than gothic stories necessarily being scary, they are more accurately described as unnerving and
supernatural. But gothic stories often also have a sense of comedy to them. In this short essay, I want you
to tell me where you see the presence of both gothic and comedic themes the most in the story. At one
point in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Irving describes the town: “A drowsy, dreamy influence seems
to hang over the land, and pervade the very atmosphere” (42). So, where do you see in “Rip Van
Wrinkle” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” a “drowsy, dreamy influence” that creates a gothic yet
comedic atmosphere? I want you to quote at least once from either short story to influence your
analysis.
 IMPORTANT NOTE: Avoid the use of first-person pronouns—pronouns like “I,” “we,”
“my”— in this short writing.

Critique a Criminal Justice Policy at the Federal or State Level

Instructions

Critique a criminal justice policy used at the federal or state level that has notably been determined as failing to meet its objectives for improvement after an implementation plan was carried out to support that policy.

For this assignment, you will reflect on what you have learned this week and will develop a 3-page memo to explain and summarize why a criminal justice policy failed to meet its strategic goals. The purpose here is to become familiar with the parts of a criminal justice policy and to learn how the implementation of a new criminal justice policy using a strategic plan led to its failure so you can evaluate how to avoid such mistakes in your planning efforts.

Be sure to incorporate the following into a memo:

•    Provide reasoning about the purpose of the criminal justice policy and how it was implemented.
•    Discuss the basis for the plan’s failure and what resources were used to carry out the implementation of that plan.

Length: 3-page memo
References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources.

The completed assignment should address all the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations, and current APA standards, and adhere to the Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

PLEASE read the following directions carefully. Most points are lost for not following directions.

Find a current news article (within one year of today) that is directly related to a specific topic featured in the video or textbook for this chapter. Include the link to the article at the top of your submission and write at least a 100 word summary of the article. The summary must be 100% in your own words (do not copy and paste or even quote the article). The article should also be related to the United States government (not an international story).

After the summary, you must tell me in at least 100 more words how this article is clearly and specifically related to the textbook and video. Please make this section separate from the summary (a separate paragraph, for example). This section must make it clear to me that you read and watched the material.

In case this isn’t clear, this submission should be at least 200 words total.

You may only use the following sources: apnews.com, reuters.com, npr.org, 19thnews.org, nytimes.com, and washingtonpost.com. The last two sources allow a certain number of article views per month, but the first four give you an unlimited number of views. You may need to create a free account to access some articles.

You may submit the paper late, but you lose 5 points each day it’s late.
