Film Music Evaluation

Field of Dreams

This theme music sets a tone of anticipation in the beginning. The melody is simple and slow and tells you that this will be a serious topic. The various segments of the music are probably meant to represent the mood and tone of various segments of the move. Although I have not seen this movie, the music would tell you that the emotional themes include family, magic or spirituality and nostalgia. The music never goes into a quick pace of anything else that would signify high levels of drama. The last segment of the piece gave me a sense of mystery. Some of the sound effects used provide a feeling that there may be something totally unexpected at the conclusion.This theme music uses a variety of musical approaches to convey the mood. In the opening you hear what sounds like a string quartet playing in harmony with uniform timbre. The French horn leads to crescendos of bass and chimes that implied to me a sense of anticipation when layered with the strings. There was no real rhythm to this portion of the theme. The next segment reminded me of an old ragtime, solo piano part without accompaniment. This is what gave me the feelings of family and nostalgia about this music. The final segment adds more texture and adds some use of technology through sound effects that I could not identify. They also use strings and horns again but with a lower pitch that sounds more mysterious especially with the “snake-like” sound effect cutting in.

Terminator Salvation

I have not seen this film either but have seen previous Terminator movies so I am familiar with the mood. Right away, the emotion of the music is dark, scary and tense, which is how most Terminator films could be described. The song also builds in intensity and volume as it goes on, which tells you that the movie will do the same thing. The middle passage of the music gave me a feeling that some type of great journey was going to happen. Since I have not seen this movie, I listened for clues in the music as to what the ending might be. What the music seemed to be saying was that something either very sad or very solemn would be happening since the music was quiet yet suspenseful and technical. Intervals of low-pitched horns mixed with high-pitched strings climbing the scale in triplets in fast intervals seems to be a common pattern for suspense building movie music. Along with some traditional percussion instruments, the tempo is set with the sound of what sounds like an anvil hitting hard metal on every other beat. This is meant to represent the metal the Terminator is made of, in my opinion. The mood is built by using dynamics. The melody is changing very little but the volume increases, as if the Terminator is getting closer to you. Synthesized high-tech sounds at the end blend in to give the futuristic feel, since that is another part of these movies. One sound could be described as a failing radio on a spaceship.

Taxi Driver

I have seen this movie, which made it interesting to hear how music was used to express the story and themes. This is also a dark and suspenseful movie, and the music gives you that feeling as well. There is then a middle section that sounds light and peaceful that is contrast with the darker theme. This could be trying to show that this (Travis) character has two sides of his personality in conflict, or could be representing different parts of the movie, like the more innocent Jodie Foster character. This music did match well with the plot and adds to the drama and suspense. Percussion with an accelerating tempo is used in this theme. This could be conveying that the character will also be changing. It is just a simple snare drum set against horns that builds up speed during each phrase, but that is enough to set the mood. The saxophone or clarinet theme is a big contrast with the darker them. The harmony is just a simple piano part that could be described as homophonic as it plays this simple accompanying part. The clarinet uses leaps in the piece along with bending tones that sound like a soft, soothing, smooth jazz piece. When it cuts back to the darker theme and the drum part, the dynamics change and the higher volume implies that the dark side wins out, which is what happened in this movie.

Lord of the Rings

The mood of this music starts out very happy and jovial with the flute and violin playing a simple part that reminds me of old Irish music. This tells me that the movie has some fun and happiness in it. The music also sounds like what is usually used for background music in movies set in the great outdoors. You get a feeling of space and wonderment like you would walking through a magical canyon you had never seen before. Some of this piece also give a feeling of ceremony or formality. Since I have not seen this whole movie, this could have something to do with a formal ceremony between characters. The tone gets darker and makes me think of struggle later in the piece, even though the instrumentationis basically the same, with more layers of strings added for dramatic effect at certain points. Even though this is a fictional movie, the time setting is obviously long ago so they may be borrowing from instruments and song forms of hundreds of years ago. The flute and violin date back centuries so these instruments set an old-style feel with the simple, happy melodies. An ostinato pattern is used later in the theme with the wind and string instrument playing two notes in each phrase with different timbre for each instrument type. The high-pitched harmony of string instruments against this give the feeling of a larger, important gathering. The solo flute sound uses echo, harmonics and dynamics at some points in time that make it sound like music is being played in a big outdoor space. Since most of the movie takes place outdoors, that is consistent with the plot.

Twelve Years a Slave

The story of a free man brought back into slavery for twelve includes drama, suspense, struggle and victory. You can hear all of these things in this theme, even though they just use simple instrumentation to set the mood. There is no joy or lightness in this music and only a sense of sadness. The way the theme ends gives a feeling of a man standing on a battlefield after a great victory, against the odds. This theme is also timeless because it doesn’t use any synthesized parts or technology that you can hear, so the same instruments were available in the 1800s when this movie is set.The instrumentation is very simple, which makes it impressive that it can covey so much emotion. I am not sure what key this music is set in, but a minor key might be giving the music some of the sadness that comes through. The only instruments are strings, so the timbre is consistent, and the harmonies seem to accentuate the sadness and gloominess by creating chord patterns that sound darker in combination than they would as solo parts. The victory theme at the end uses a simple horn phrase in a different key symbolize that one person had triumphed against the odds and the key change could represent a change from suffering to victory.

State estimation is a most important real-time control algorithm in energy management systems that is vulnerable to attack by false data injection. Hackers circumvent the bad data measurement detection system and implement malicious data modification. It will lead the power system to overload and loss stability. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the false data injection attack will be given. A basic strategy for defensing the false data injection attack will also be introduced. By reviewing the literature, an implementation of cyber-physical co-simulation will be presented to valid the applicability of the countermeasure for this type of the cyber-attack on a microgrid.

With the increasing size of sensoring, communication, automatic control and intelligent processing integrated in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has been widely applied on power grid to monitor the reliable operations. Consequently, cyber-security has been considered as a more crucial factor, especially in some critical microgrids that ensures critical loads to be kept secure and operational even in presence of contingencies.

Supervisory control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is a comprehensive data processing system that is normally used for operation monitoring in industrial organizations to maintains the security and reliability of a power grid. The sensors measure the bus voltages and power flows in a power grid. Then the measurements are transmitted to the control center. Engineers can estimate the state of the grid by analyzing the measurement data via state estimation, thus control the grid components. However, SCADA systems have been facing a lot of threats with the intention of gaining unauthorized access since they have been used in field. The self-vulnerabilities of the SCADA systems may one of the important factors that lead cyber-attack to happen, as well as caused severe system instability and financial losses.

False data injection (FDI) attacks are actions of injecting malicious measurement to against state estimation in electric power systems. In an FDI attack, an attacker compromises measurement from grid sensors that undetected errors are introduced into estimates of state variables, and thus cause a loss to power system. FDI attack research was firstly published in 2009. Up to now, many researchers have contributed many strategies and methods to defend against FDI attacks. This paper is going to investigate two methodology that can be countermeasures for FDI attacks – Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF).

Feasibility and validation of your approach:

The project is proposed to implement the FDI in CPS model, and valid the CRC and UKF methods according to a simulation. An NS3 based and PowerWorld interfaced cyber-physical co-simulation for smart grid will be used for simulating the microgrid applications. The simulation results will be the FDI defensing success rate by a several of random attack tests to the system. After the simulation, the results will be analyzed and be compared.
