Change forces that made the organization to change when responding
The success of any organization in changing its operations is linked to its ability to adapt to the existing changes in the market. However, any change carried out in the Men’s shirt industry is always contributed towards by different forces that make it easy for the organization’s management to work towards adjusting its operations to fit the current market demands. From the case study therefore, the main forces that pushed the Men’s shirt industry towards making the decision change include the willingness of those in the management to adopt the proposed change and the type of relationship between the management and the customers served by the industry. Again, the need to change the production patterns of the industry through advanced technology application also contributed significantly towards expanding the industry. The results of the research and development department also contributed towards the change in the industry despite the disagreements that were highly experienced.
From the case study, it is clear that the Men’s Shirt Industry was setting its operations towards achieving better profits while at the same time adopting some of the best technologies in the market that had not been applied in the industry previously. Due to the need to expand its operations and make more profits in the market, the industry worked towards adopting some of the new technologies that made sure that everything that the organization adopted was in accordance to the change process that had been initially anticipated by the organization. The forces of change affecting Men’s Shirt Industry affect the attractiveness of the Plastiwear because it influences most of the decisions that are made in the organization industry. The performance of the shirt industry contributes significantly towards influencing most of the decisions that affect Plastiwar’s opportunity.
Levels of innovation and the type evident in the case study
Incremental innovation is a type of innovation that is made up of small but important improvements in an organization’s services, productions, and any of the other ways that an organization does its business. Incremental innovations refer to all the new and improved innovations that we come across every day (Klerkx, and Leeuwis, 2009). These innovations are accompanied by shifts that lead to massive improvements in how companies do their packaging, how they function, and a general enhancement of an organization’s supply chain (Duane Ireland, Kuratko, and Morris, 2006). It seeks to extent and diversify an organization’s product and services with the sole purpose of improving their profitability. One of the key defining characteristics of this innovation is in how it can be quickly communicated and visualized with the aim of offering something new that gets the attention of the consumers.
Radical innovation is a type of innovation that either supplements or destroys the existing business models. When introduced into the market, this type of innovation ends up blowing the existing systems or processes while at the same time replacing them with completely new systems (Fullan, 2012). Radical innovation is characterized by having parameters that are clearly stated and delineated as compared to the other types of innovations. Additionally, despite this innovation being accompanied by a significantly high risk failure, its adopters need to come up with strategies that will make its adoption better and more efficient.
Disruptive innovation is defined as that type of innovation whose adoption in an organization or a sector significantly affects its functioning or operations. Its introduction into the market leads to a significant disruption of most of the operations carried out in the involved sectors both positively and negatively (Klerkx, and Leeuwis, 2009). For example, the Internet is one of the disruptive technologies that are evident in the current market. Its adoption has displaced a significant number of employees in different sectors while at the same time it has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of different sectors.
The innovation presented by GreenPlastics can be described as a disruptive innovation because the company in question entails to adopt new technologies in its operations for purposes of improving its efficiency and productivity.
Characteristics of innovation champions
Innovation champions are characterized by different traits that are meant to make individuals and organizations learn from them. As such, some of the key characteristics of innovation champions include being positive influencers, being well networked, passionate about innovation, and open minded (Fichter, 2009). At times, innovation champions are always characterized by a blend of different sources that define the key causes of these technologies and how they get to be adopted over time while at the same time spreading to its target market in the best way possible. Innovation champions are also required to be unique when compared to any other technology in the market (Daellenbach, McCarthy, and Schoenecker, 1999). As such, based on the case study provided, the two primary companies joined forces and came up with a single name that was meant to guide it through the whole adoption and implementation period.
For effectiveness in its operations, the new organization has not fixed its operations towards a certain direction of operations because it plans to venture into solar energy as a way of serving new customers in the market (Daellenbach, McCarthy, and Schoenecker, 1999). It is the passion of those in the organization’s management that push them towards joining the two organizations, working towards improving its services, and showing interest towards investing in new innovations that bring about efficiency and effectiveness in the organizations operations (Fichter, 2009). Based on the explanations given in the case study, the organization is an innovation champion because it paves way for other technologies to bring out their own ideas after testing the market using new styles and skills that have not been tested by any other organization (Daellenbach, McCarthy, and Schoenecker, 1999). Despite the innovations being adopted by the organization being somehow familiar, its application and the way how the organization does everything contributes towards making it an innovation champion.
The most appropriate party in KSG who would play an important role in helping the organization become an innovation champion is the Vice President of Research and Development department and the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. The Board of Management at KSG also need to be involved in all decisions concerning the organization and its participation towards becoming an innovation champion.
Joseph Black has mentioned to Shelley that he is concerned about the number of innovations KSG has been able to bring to the market the last few years. He is concerned that the internal climate within KSG might not be supportive for innovation. Shelley asks your advice on diagnosing the innovation climate with KSG. Explain to her what instruments are available to measure the innovation climate and recommend a suitable instrument. An organization’s innovation climate defines the atmosphere that encourages all its innovators to go on with their innovation process by offering them with the right resources and tools. Some of the tools that can be used to determine an organization’s investment climate include innovation leadership, member’s innovative ability, interpersonal innovation and key concerns, and supervisor’s support. The bureaucratic structure of the organization is also another measure of an organization’s innovation climate. Team cohesion also contributes significantly towards assessing the innovation climate of an organization. The meaning of this is that, the level of cohesion evident in a given organization plays a very important role in determining how the organization invests in different innovations. The working independence of the innovators also contributes towards determining its innovation success. The independence of innovators in an organization to work on their innovations programs is also used to determine its innovation environment, with the more independent innovators having more freedom to work on their innovations while those with restricted innovations have less freedom to exercise their innovations.
Presenting innovators with an intellectually stimulating environment is considered very important in letting individuals work towards achieving their innovation goals easily. An intellectually stimulating environment entails creating an honest and open debate that gives different individuals an opportunity to discuss their ideas better and more effectively (Mathisen, and Einarsen, 2004). Making important work exchanges is always considered an important part of creating an innovative environment because it allows the involved parties to come together and develop effective and efficient ideas that make it easy for them to develop innovations decisions that are well thought of (Bates, and Khasawneh, 2005). Developing the right environment therefore works significantly towards making sure that all the potential innovators share their skills and abilities without worrying on what the management will do to them if the innovation fails (Mathisen, and Einarsen, 2004). Importantly, the process will also lead to an increase in the level of trust between the innovators and their managements.
Developing an environment that promotes trust and safety amongst the innovators and their managements is also considered one of the best strategies that contribute significantly towards helping them improve their innovation levels (Mathisen, and Einarsen, 2004). While it is always considered important for employees to develop trust between each other, being sure that their safety is guaranteed irrespective of the kind of innovation that they engage in always contribute towards improving their confidence when presenting a new idea to their bosses (Bates, and Khasawneh, 2005). Concerning flexibility, organizations need to provide their employees with flexible working schedules that are meant to improve their operations while at the same time making sure that they do confine their employees to the existing ways of doing things in the organization (Mathisen, and Einarsen, 2004). These elements are evident in the case study because the involved managements have made it easy for employees to come up with their own innovative ideas. These ideas are taken positively and nurtured within the organization without having to worry on the outcomes of the organization when the employee introduces these technologies to them.
Generally, these tools will measure the organization’s ability to facilitate all the innovative employees or stakeholders in the organization. The tools will also measure the effectiveness of the organization to accommodate innovative ideas and minds in its operations without affecting its normal operations.
Blockages evident within KSG
Distinguish between perceptual, process and environmental blockages
A perceptual block is an obstacle that restricts an individual from coming up with a problem solving innovation due to their biased perceptions. A perceptual block affects an individual’s ability to solve an existing problem because of a negative perception or by lacking the right information on what could solve their issues. A process block on the other hand defines all the hurdles that are brought about within all the products development stages. All the production hurdles experienced in the production chain like lack of raw materials and lack of resources define process blockage. Environmental blocks on the other hand refer to all the environmental factors that limit an organization’s production significantly. Environmental blockages are made up of factors like the existing environmental policies and improper waste disposals that affect the operations of an organization.
Blockages evident in KSG
Perceptual blockage is the key blockage that is evident at KSG. Most of the issues that are noted at KSG are brought about by perception variations amongst the key stakeholders.
It seems that despite KSG having a Research and Development (R&D) department, they lack an innovation strategy. Discuss why this is problematic with Shelley, using examples from the case study to highlight KSG’s approach.
Despite KSG having one of the research and developments that helps its management to come up with some of the best products in the market, Shelley still finds its production problematic. One of the main things that make the operations of the organization problematic comes from the fact that there are a series of sub-divisions between the organization’s internal management. For example, despite the organization’s research and development department coming up with a new technology that helped them bring about new plastic polymer, the kind of relationship that exist between the Research and Development’s Vice President and the Chief Executive Officer is not good, thus making Shelley to question any of the technology developed by the organization.
There is also lack of clarity in the organization’s strategy because most of the products offered by its research and development do not always go through a rigorous analysis meant to improve their quality in a significant way. Additionally, the type of production offered by the organization does not also meet Shelley’s expectations. From the discussion, Shelley is quoted saying, “But this is obviously a very different type of product for us”, a clear indication that the products offered do not meet his expectations. The discussion made in the case study gives a detailed discussion of everything that makes Shelley to term KSG’s approach problematic as opposed to being the kind of approach that he was expecting from the organization. Despite these problems being identified, Shelley notes that the note have made a thorough investigations into their finances because they offer a solid evidence about the organization’s finances. The positive note is important because it strengthens the party’s bargaining power with Shelley.
The essential tasks involved in creating and implementing an innovation strategy for KSG
For KSG to create and implement its innovation, a series of steps need to be followed by both its management and stakeholders. The most effective strategies to follow include getting an order from the organization’s management to set the right targets, carrying out a strategic orientation of innovation activities in the organization and specifying the fields to search and research on. After identifying the areas to search on, the organization through its management is supposed to begin the search process, come up with the right design for the innovation processes in the organization and later presenting the innovation to the organization’s stakeholders. If the organization follows these steps strictly, it will be easy for any form of innovation to be adopted and implemented without any issues being experienced during the adoption and implementation process. All the steps indicated above should therefore be developed in a strict way to ensure that everything required to facilitate these steps is offered within the stipulated time.
