Part 1: Organizational analysis

The soft-drink business has been growing over the years, with new companies cropping from different parts of the world, thus leading to an increase in the level of experienced in the product’s market. I have been interested in working in the soft drink industry in the last couple of years, with my main interest being working in the human resource department (Kaplan, & Haenlein, 2010). The soft drink industry has been growing moderately over the last five years despite having been constrained by different factors like trends in consumer behavior. The current changes in consumer health trends and the push for a more healthy society has led to a sudden shift of consumers from consuming carbonated drinks to bottled water and other beverages that are considered healthier (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007). However, despite the changes in consumer preferences there have been increasing needs for more energy drinks and low-sugar beverages that have been dominant in pushing for the soft drink industry. Soft drink companies have been working towards developing zero-sugar and other related drinks that have less negative effects to the lives of the targeted consumers.

The number of soft drink sales in terms of dollars has also been increasing in all parts of the world, with the sales for carbonated drinks leading in internationally. A look at the consumption patterns and trends of soft-drinks revealed a significant variation in different countries, with North America constituting a 69 percent of the soft drinks consumed in the world. The company that I have been wishing to work for serves more than 200 countries through its signature products with an estimated 22,000 company products being consumed every single second in different parts of the world.

Challenges and opportunities faced by the organization


Sugar reduction without affecting the product’s flavor and keeping the labels clean

One of the challenges that the organization has been having is that of reducing the sugar content of its product as a way of keeping its health conscious customer group. The need to change the sugar content of the products is linked to the increased demand for sugar-free products that will not affect the health of the consumers. The key challenge in this is attached to the fact that the company has to maintain its quality, sweetness, and flavor when making the needed changes (Shocker, Srivastava, & Ruekert, 1994). As such, the research and development department of the organization has been working tireless towards making sure that it offers the best and its products will remain attractive to the customers irrespective of the sugar content (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007).

Differentiating its products in a market place that is oversaturated

Being highly saturated with new products that almost have the same tastes and looks, it is highly challenging for the organization to differentiate its products from what its close competitors are offering in the market (Kaplan, & Haenlein, 2010). The key challenge in the differentiation strategy of the company is linked to the massive innovations that have happened in the last one decade, with each company developing new products that make it highly difficult to differentiate the new products that the company is currently producing.

Coping with the customer demand changes

There has been a shift in soft drink consumer patterns and behaviors in different parts of the world. Most of the consumers have been demanding for zero-sugar products that will not have any negative effects to their health (Connelly, Gilbert, Zaccaro, Threlfall, Marks, & Mumford, 2000). The need for more healthy products across the world due increased cases of diseases linked to the sugared products has created a need to change the products that are offered to the market (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007). Soft-drink manufacturing companies have therefore been challenged to produce products that meet the consumer needs. Coping with the increased demand to serve the current market requirements has therefore proved to be high challenging for the organization.

Adapting to the contemporary imminent policy changes

The need to operate globally calls for the adoption of an effective strategy that will make sure the company meets all the policy requirements in different countries. Coping with varied policies from different countries where the company has set its operations has been challenging because the policies have been changing over time (Shocker, Srivastava, & Ruekert, 1994). Adapting and adjusting to the changes has therefore proved to be very difficult for the organization, thus affecting its ability to operate perfectly in international market (Kaplan, & Haenlein, 2010). Meeting the changing requirements set by various global agencies that control the soft-drink sector has also proved to be very difficult for the organization.


Some of the opportunities that the organization could work on to maximize its impact in the market include the following:-

Developing healthy options

One of the opportunities that the organization could work towards maximizing its production and impact in the market is coming up with healthy options. It should continue improving its products to fit the current health needs while at the same time working towards making its customers aware of the health implications linked to its products. The organization has an opportunity to diversify its product base and serve a wider customer base. The company can utilize its diverse workforce and use its strong financial abilities to diversify its products and serve its target market better and in a more satisfactory manner.

Expanding cooperate social responsibility (CSR)

One of the opportunities that the organization could adopt is that of diversifying its activities for purposes of tackling all the negative remarks that could affect the image of the company and its ability to benefit the local population. Working on this will improve the company’s image greatly.

Research and development

The company’s research and development personnel have an opportunity to develop better and healthy products that will be highly accepted by the health conscious customers. The quantity and type of sugar used in a variety of the company’s products should be well researched for efficiency and effectiveness purposes (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007). The research and development department is also supposed to research on the flavors that are used in its production as a way of improving its products taste and appearance (Shocker, Srivastava, & Ruekert, 1994). Introducing new flavors will be highly important for the company to improve its products and ultimately increase its customer base.

Effects of challenges and opportunities

The challenges that the organization face could have some negative effective on my personal professional development. The challenges could be bring both a positive and a negative effect to my professional development. For a start, the challenges will work as a catalyst for me to think outside the box and come up with some of the best strategies that could help the organization out of some of these issues. Additionally, the challenges could also open avenues for more research about the quality of products that should be offered to diversify the company products or carry out its differentiation perfectly.

The strategies adopted by organizations to come out of these challenges could lead to more productivity being experienced in the organization, thus leading to more profits being realized by the organization. The opportunities available to the organization will on the other hand improve the productivity of the company significantly. The company will also serve a large market due to its diversification, thus leading to an increase in the revenue raised from its operations (Wilkinson, 2002). Irrespective of the benefits from the opportunities, being a human resource manager will call for an adoption of a more diversified workforce, meaning that I will have to employ more employees in the organization to cater increased product demand. I will also need to construct more outlets for the company in different parts of the world, thus digging more into the company’s budget (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007). Generally, these effects will affect me by prompting that I do more research on how to deal with the challenges as well as ways of maximizing the new opportunities that will lead to more profits being realized from the organization as I work in my respective area of operation.

Kinds of Jobs to enter as a Masters graduate

Some of the job opportunities that I may get from the organization as a master’s student include being a human resources officer, internal audit officer, assistant maintenance supervisor, or a marketing manager. I can fit perfectly in these opportunities because they are administrative in nature and I can work perfectly towards executing my duties and responsibilities perfectly.

My current Professional Skills

Some of the professional skills that I have and could help the company perform exceptionally include leadership skills, communication, risk management, scheduling, cost management, critical thinking, and negotiating skills. I also have perfect task management skills, quality management, and the ability to make people happy while working in a team (Shocker, Srivastava, & Ruekert, 1994).


One of the skills that I have natured throughout my education is that of being a good leader who always listens to what his team members are saying concerning any project. I have learned to be an exemplary leader who shows his team the way forward by engaging in any of the team tasks. Some of the leadership skills that I have learned over the years include embracing positivity, being creative, giving feedback, and motivating all my team members (Wilkinson, 2002).

Effective communication skills

Effective communication has been termed as one of the key skills that contribute towards making a successful team. Effective leaders are expected to be highly effective in how they do their communication by embracing the opinions of every team member. Adopting the right communication strategies contributes significantly towards making ideas flow and teams highly productive (Shocker, Srivastava, & Ruekert, 1994). Throughout time, I have learned the importance sharing important information amongst the team, consulting before making important decisions, and learning to listen from all members of the society.


Over time, I have also learned that the skill of scheduling that helps me to know what activities to do first and the ones to do last. I have learned to keep my priorities right as a way of avoiding conflicts when implementing any of the project practices, and this has contributed significantly in helping me achieve project goals within the set time frame (Tidd, Bessant, & Pavitt, 2005). Additionally, my scheduling skills have been very instrumental in helping me meet deadlines and work towards attaining the set project indicators.

Risk management

Having the right skills to manage risks has been one of the important elements that I have learned over the years. As such, I have learned some of the best strategies to deal with any of the risks that I may encounter during my professional engagements (Connelly, et al., 2000). Some of the skills that I have acquired over the years concerning risk management include problem solving skills, analytical skills, communicating effectively, and learning to hear stories from all the sides (Mumford, Campion, & Morgeson, 2007). Everything that I have learned will be effective in helping me handle all the risks that I may encounter. My risk management skills will dictate my success in everything that I will engage in professionally (Connelly, et al., 2000).

Cost management

Being a good leader calls for the adoption of an effective cost management strategies that will lead to more being achieved within the set budget. I have overtime learned to develop reasonable budgets that are able to meet the financial needs of any project that I engage in. Developing an effective budget is a skill that is not common to all and I can apply it on everything that I do for efficiency and effectiveness in the decision making process (Tidd, Bessant, & Pavitt, 2005).

Analysis of critical incidences

During my coursework, I have had a number of experiences that have modeled me to acquire the leadership skills that I have acquired over time. Some of the incidences that have contributed towards making me improve my leadership skills came from the leadership roles that I took in my team and the courage that I had to vie for a leadership position in the school. It was the leadership roles that I took from the team activities that helped me learn about the type of communication needed when communicating to people from different backgrounds. The roles also helped me sharpen my team participation skills by helping me to make important decisions by consulting all members of the team. Running for a student council leadership position also helped me develop some of my leadership skills. I learned how to handle external pressures that affect an individual as he or she makes his or her plans work for the benefit of their team. Being a leader also equipped me with the right knowledge on how to make different parties cooperate and work effectively towards meeting a common goal. I also learned to follow protocol and act according to the set rules and regulations effectively through the opportunity that I had to serve the population through the positions that I took. These skills have all been very effective in nurturing me to be the leader that I am currently.

To add on what I learned from the team leadership roles, some of the courses that I have learned in class have made it easy for me to acquire some important leadership skills that I have been using and can still apply in any professional during that I may take in the future. Most of the leadership lessons that I have learned in class over the years and through the interactions that I have made with tutors and other student leaders will be very instrumental in helping me gain more leadership knowledge. I have also attended various leadership workshops and seminars that have worked significantly in helping me improve my leadership skills. I will apply all what I have learned in the future to guide my team or those who are around me meet our set goals using the available resources and within the set time period.
