The United States releases twenty tons of carbon monoxide per person per year. Carbon Monoxide release is a result of burning fossil fuels with an insufficient amount of oxygen that causes the formation of carbon monoxide that pollutes our environment. Everyday fuel is burnt by cars, airplanes, large factories and manufacturing plants. This is causing a very large and deadly problem for our environment. When gases used on earth are released into the atmosphere they act as a blanket and trap radiation that is then redirected to earth. This concept is called the Greenhouse Effect (Bad Greenhouse, 1).
There are many ways in which we can slow and even stop the Greenhouse effect. More public transportation, a high speed rail system, and alternative fuel sources are just a few of the many ways we can protect our environment. Unfortunately these concepts take a lot of money to get put into action. I believe that in order to fund the conservation of the natural environment the federal government should increase gasoline tax by one dollar ($1.00) per gallon. This dollar per gallon will go towards the funding of three different but equally important goals.
Fifty cents of every dollar will go towards more public transportation. The other fifty cents per gallon will be split evenly between funding for research of alternative fuels and developing a high-speed rail system in the United States. In order for everyone, regardless of where they live, to see results the money spent on gasoline tax will stay in the area that it was purchased and put towards more public transportation in that area. This way each city/town will see improvement in their local public transportation.

Until we stop polluting our environment with deadly gases there will be no telling what may happen to the ozone layer, or us. We must do everything in our power to see that earth is protected so that we may live our lives without the worries of what we are inhaling every time we step out of our homes. Supporting and using public transportation is a small step that can be done to shield our environment from carbon monoxide poisoning but it is a step that takes your commitment. Help save the environment, support the gas tax.

The Horrors of Animal Euthanasia
The Horrors of Animal Euthanasia
Due to the domestication of cats and dogs their populations have skyrocketed. This is due in part to the lack of pet owners acting in a responsible manner. These responsibilities include the spaying and neutering of pets. These numbers of
homeless animals in communities have caused humane societies to euthanize too many
animals. This, I feel is a violation to animal rights and is a cruel way for these animals to have to leave this world. I disagree with the activists who believe that the way to keep animal populations down is to euthanize these poor animals. Nothing good could come from the slaughtering of these animals. Fostering large numbers of animals in
communities is an overwhelming task, but there are many solutions to this problem. The
euthanizing of animals is wrong and all shelters should switch to a no-kill policy.
There are too many animals in the shelters. Animal control officers are forced to
put these animals to sleep that could have made loving and affectionate pets. ( Open Your Hearts Mission, p.1 ). Last year at the Vanderburgh Humane Society 2022 unwanted cats and dogs were put to death. These animals were taken to the E-room in the back where they were injected with a syringe of cool-blue liquid death. After a few seconds the animal fell limp and eventually its heart stopped. Employees at the humane society have the task of deciding which of these animals should be euthanized. This is not something they enjoy and take pride in doing. Usually after a few days the animals which have not been adopted will be euthanized. The ones that are sick or hurt are the first ones to go.
