Sending an Informative Business Message (20%)

Objective

This assignment provides an opportunity to practice developing a strategic approach for composing and sending an informative business message in a workplace context. The message being sent, may be from the perspective of someone that holds a position of formal authority such as a manager, director or Chief Executive Officer or an employee that does not hold a position of formal authority.

Strategic Approach

The strategic approach is one that combines the written message with at least one other channel for communication, such as face-to-face conversation. The final product will be in the form of an e-mail, memo or letter depending on the most appropriate method for the situation. The focus for learning is on both the strategic process of analyzing, drafting and writing and the final written product.

There is a choice of topics. The message may: (a) address a current situation in your workplace (b) address a situation from a previous workplace that you would have liked to address but did not have opportunity, courage or skills to do so or (c) address a hypothetical situation where you are attempting to inform your employee or employer of an issue that is of personal and or professional importance.

Part 1- Written Expectations for Process (1-2 pages)

Describe the context and purpose of the message.

Identify the channel for the message (e-mail, memo or letter).

Explain the strategic approach that you are using to combine a written message with a face- to- face conversation or any other communication channels. (Refer to Figure 4.4 pg. 95 or slide # 8)

Identify the direct or indirect strategy that you will develop and why. (Refer to Figure 5.5 pg. 115 or slide #15)

Respond to relevant questions and address the steps in the 3X3 writing process. (Figure 5.1 pg. 111 or slide #9)

Refer to relevant and applicable principles and techniques for developing an effective message as discussed in Chapter 5 with particular attention to the Checklist on pg. 102 or slides # 34 & 35)

Part 2 – Written Expectation for the Final Product (1-2 pages)

A professionally written message (e-mail, memo or letter) that is the result of careful consideration of all of the steps in Part 1.

question number 1 Describe YOUR Writing Process I want you to use

question number 1

Describe YOUR Writing Process

I want you to use three different approaches to describe the process that you go through in producing a piece of writing: a paragraph, an analogy, and a diagram.

Paragraph – Describing your writing process in words focuses on the sequential nature of the process. Because sentence syntax relies on chronological order, the description of a process in words emphasizes the chronological order of the stages involved. Begin with the idea that a piece of writing needs to be produced and follow the process all the way through to the completed document.

Analogy – Think about another process that reminds you of your writing process. Begin the analogy with the statement “My writing process is like…” Describe the comparison process, and then point out the similarities between your writing process and the other process.

Diagram – Create a diagram that demonstrates the various stages of your writing process. By using a diagram, you can break out of the chronological order of the process. Remember, writing is both a linear process that occurs chronologically in time, but it also a recursive process that relies on stages that may not occur in a strictly chronological order

Module 3: Focus Learners You will need to develop profiles of three

Module 3: Focus Learners

You will need to develop profiles of three focus learners (student profiles) in your “imaginary class.” Name them FOCUS LEARNER ONE, TWO AND THREE.

Download and review Sample Models of Portrait of a Focus Learner attached

Use Focus Learner Profile self-checklist  attached before you submit this assignment.

Please use this link to find three students and develop profiles from the information provided.  http://elllps.squarespace.com/work (Links to an external site.)

Focus Learner profiles should include the following information:

At least three (3) questions about each Focus Learner assets (knowledge of learners: personal, cultural, and community) to one of his/her peers.

IMPORTANT: Below are examples of what a profile may include. Your description of your Focus Learner profiles should include information that would help you develop a clear picture of who your learner is and how the learner engages with the work.

Your focus learner must have an exceptionality identified on his/her individualized educational program/plan (i.e., IEP, IFSP or other plans). Select a learner that is representative of the varied/range of learner needs in your class.

The bolded descriptors below must be included (skills, socio-economic, language, and culture). Please include at least three of the other background descriptors in your profiles. These are what would be important for you to know about the learner.

You will find a student work sample from which you can create a student achievement chart attached . http://elllps.squarespace.com/work

IMPORTANT: Your description of the Focus Learner profiles should include the following information:

Skills, strengths (Present Levels of Performance – PLOP) for Reading/Language Art, Math, Speech/Language

Aspirations and passions (interests)

Likes and dislikes

Life experiences

Languages spoken

How the student likes to learn

Struggles or potential barriers to learning (Social-emotional and

Academic challenges)

Cultural, ethnic background

Socio-economic level(s)

Anything else the teacher deems important

IMPORTANT: See the Focus Learner Profile checklist below to ensure that you are meeting assignment requirements.

Focus learner’s classification as identified in the IEP is described.

Focus learner’s strengths and challenges and their potential impact on learning instruction and the learning targets are described.

Focus learner’s interests, aspirations and passions are  described with examples.

Focus learner’s likes and dislikes are described with examples

IMPORTANT: Before you start, review the How do I select a focus learner and the checklist below:

“How do I select a focus learner? The focus learner must have an exceptionality identified on his/her individualized educational program/plan (i.e., IEP, IFSP or other plans).

Select a learner that is representative of the varied/range of learner needs on your caseload or in your class. The focus learner selected should have multiple learning or support needs (do not select a focus learner with the fewest needs). You want to be able to demonstrate your ability to meet the complex needs of a learner. As a candidate, you are not evaluated on whether your focus learner is able to respond correctly to each learning task. You are evaluated on your ability to plan for, respond to, and evaluate and assess the focus learner’s strengths and needs. A learner with varied challenges will provide opportunities for you to demonstrate your skill in planning, instruction, and assessment. At least one of these needs (academic needs, identified by an IEP goal or support needs, identified by either an IEP goal and/or required accommodations/modifications) must be aligned with the focus learner’s IEP. The learning goal you develop or the specific planned supports to help the focus learner achieve the learning goal must be based on the focus learner’s IEP. Finally, because you are required to document that learner’s performance over several days, you will want to choose a focus learner who typically has consistent attendance.” (SCALE (2018). Making Good Planning Choices Instruction in Special Education. A&P was the first traditional supermarket operator in the United States, with

A&P was the first traditional supermarket operator in the United States, with its roots going back to 1859. In its heyday, the firm operated over 4,200 stores. During the period from 1915 to 1975, A&P was the largest gro- cery retailer in the country. However it suffered a long, painful decline that led to multiple reorganization efforts as well as bankruptcies. In 2015, the long strug- gle to revive the firm came to an end when, as part of a bankruptcy filing, A&P sold off or closed its final 256 stores.1

What happened to this retailing icon? They were sim- ply stuck in the middle. When it was on top, A&P pro- vided a clear value proposition for its customers. It was one of the most cost-efficient retailers in the market while providing a wide array of products for its custom- ers. As a result, it had both cost and differentiation ad- vantages over its rivals. However, things started to turn in the 1950s. Rather than invest in, expand, and mod- ernize its stores, its controlling owners distributed most of its profits to shareholders through large dividends. At the same time, new and aggressive competitors started to enter the market, and these competitors eroded A&P’s distinctive positioning. In the battle to win the business of cost-conscious customers, A&P faced stiff competition from massive general market retailers, most notably Walmart, as well as focused discounters, such as dollar stores and discount grocers, including Aldi. Cus- tomers looking for a higher level of service and specialty

In order to create and sustain a competitive advantage, companies need to stay focused on their customers’ evolv- ing wants and needs and not sacrifice their strategic posi- tion as they mature and the market around them evolves.

foods gravitated to grocery retailers that offered a higher level of service in larger stores, such as Weg- mans, and newer high-end providers, such as Whole Foods, that offered gourmet foods and wider organic food product lines.

A&P was initially slow to respond to these chal- lenges. When they finally did respond, as Jim Hertel, a grocery industry consultant stated, “They got caught in a downward spiral of sales declines that forced them to cut costs.” This resulted in challenges of hiring enough qualified staff and limited funds to update or upgrade stores. Even so, they were still at a cost disadvantage to both Walmart and Aldi. This left A&P with both higher prices than Walmart and other discounters and stores that felt old and dirty. In other words, the firm offered little in terms of value for its customers. After its initial bankruptcy, A&P attempted to modernize its stores and rebrand itself as a more upscale grocery retailer but lacked the financial resources to follow through on the change.

Discussion Questions

What decisions did A&P make when it was success- ful that led to its later failure?

How should the firm have responded to the new competitive challenges it faced?

What firm do you see today that faces similar challenges? How should this firm respond and act to reinforce its strategic position?
