One of the great barriers in our education system that prevents schools from meeting the educational needs and goals of English Language learner students is the lack of knowledge and training provided for teachers and staff. Teachers are not properly trained to help these students reach their goals and they are not aware of the cultural differences in students who are ELLs that will help them provide the proper education and services for these students. In order to properly address this barrier, school should provide training for general education teachers to adequately teach ELL students (Samson & Collins, 2012). Trainings should cover the important topics in teaching of ELLs including the importance of getting to know the students’ cultural background in order to understand them better and provide appropriate education. In addition, teachers should be trained to help these students develop their language skills and promote cultural inclusivity in the classroom. Teachers should encourage parent involvement in the education of their children. This can help bridge the cultural difference between the teacher, parents, students, and peers. School administrators should see the importance of these trainings and implement them as part of teacher orientation and staff development. In addition, teachers and parents who see the need should bring it to the attention of the administration of the school so they will provide such training.

As a future educator, I have positive thoughts on two-way dual immersion programs for ELL students. As ELL students build their native language proficiency, they also strengthen their proficiency in the majority language, English (Kim, Hutchison, & Winsler). The dual immersion program has many benefits, in that it provides instruction in the student’s language 50% of the time, and it provides the same content and standards as other educational programs. These programs also demonstrate positive, cultural behaviors and attitudes, meet state assessment tools, increase achievement levels for ELL and mainstream students (Kim, Hutchison & Winsler). After reading the research on these programs in different schools and grade levels, I found that TWI programs promote academic achievement, language proficiency, and positive attitudes toward school. The research in the article, found that the students reached proficiency levels in English, using productive and receptive skills, while maintaining their first language. TWI programs ensure that academic achievement is not at risk, just because the student is bilingual. Without discrimination, ELL students can speak and learn in both languages.

Teaching students, the common core curriculum in English and Spanish is the idea of two-way dual immersion programs. The program mostly teaches Spanish in from kindergarten to second grade, and in third through fifth grade is mostly English. The idea of this program is so students can speak and write in both languages. Some of the advantages of this is to have positive cross-culture and bilingual students. This program also helps even the playing field for students who only speak English amongst the ELL students. The goals are to reach the common core standards and to continue to meet the standards of a high quality Language Arts structure. I think the positives of two-way immersion programs out way the negatives. This system seems like the best way to get a non-English speaking to start speaking English. It also will help the ELL students learn good social skills with the students who speak better English. This will help them in the future with all classes.
