Population Health: Part 1

The entire world was recently stroked with a pandemic caused by Coronavirus disease (COVID 19). Covid 19 has had adverse effects on all population groups. It has had a super high prevalence rate before vaccines’ introduction, somewhat containing the situation in the present day. According to the New York Times, the most brutal hit in the United States was on January 12, 2021, when the reported daily average case was 251,232. This pandemic affects everyone, but people with compromised immune systems are most at risk, such as cancer patients. The immune system could be compromised with various comorbidities. The oncology population at risk deserves protection by educating them about their condition and risk factors to Covid 19.

Description of the Population at Risk

COVID 19’s population at risk is individuals with cancer with compromised immune systems. The main factor that causes immunocompromised systems in cancer patients is a low white blood cell count (Wbc). Other individuals with pre-existing health conditions include diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cancer, and many other diseases that can also cause an immunocompromised system (Booth et al., 2021). This category of individuals risk losing their lives to COVID 19 if they are infected; measures should thus be put in place to ensure they are not infected and follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. Overall, a person with active cancer and a decreased immune system can easily be infected and succumb to the disease before treatment is even initiated.

Interstate Distribution of Populations at Risk

The populations are distributed almost equally across all states, thus nullifying the argument that one state is at more risk than the others since cancer is generally worldwide. COVID 19 is also not secluded more to one area versus another. Many factors go into why one state has more cases versus others. It spreads quicker in densely populated areas than sparsely populated regions since it is difficult to maintain social distance in a densely populated region. Besides having an immunocompromised system from cancer, other comorbidities may cause a weakened immune system from state to state. The entire population is at risk of contracting the infection, but the effects of the disease will be severe in people with weakened immune systems. In sum, people with compromised immune systems are at greater risk and distributed almost equally across all states.

Social Determinants for Health Outcomes

Social determinants of health outcomes are fundamental aspects of public and population health. With the advent of COVID 19, these social determinants again determine the management of the populations and the health outcomes. There is a long list of these social determinants: socioeconomic status, culture, family, education, religion, marginalization, gender, ethnicity, race, and many others (Islam, 2019). These social determinants may vary the population at risk; for instance, people living in poverty may also become part of the population at risk because they cannot afford health insurance to be treated for health issues. In summary, one must not be blind to these social determinants of health when talking of populations at risk since they vary the population at risk directly or indirectly.

In addition, social determinants may create significant variation if a comparison is made between in a similar area. These factors introduce the concept of vulnerability which either restructures the original combination of the population at risk or adds to it. The vulnerable race, the marginalized, those with barbaric religious practices all become part of the population at Risk (Islam, 2019). Some religious practices follow their own beliefs in treating a disease that may cause a delay in proper treatment; thus, compromising their immunity, which introduces them to the population at risk. Overall, social determinants create a significant change in the population at risk, not only COVID 19.

Evidence-Based Interventions to Improve Treatment Outcomes

Evidence-based interventions entail making decisions based on the best available evidence to comprehensively care for the patient on a scientific foundation. Systemic implementation of the evidence-based intervention is pivotal in improving patient health outcomes at all levels, from hospital to community to personal levels. Evidence-based intervention is particularly significant among’ community nurses since it enables them to comprehensively care for their patients remotely, thereby improving public health (S. Li, Cao, & Zhu, 2019). In the COVID 19 crisis, community nurses guided by evidence-based interventions are vital in controlling community transmissions and mortality rates among the populations at risk. In brief, comprehensive implementation of evidence-based practice is essential in improving treatment outcomes.

Online Information Available on COVID 19

Since COVID 19 was a novel disease on the planet, there was a dire need for research and information to be provided for the public to learn about the condition. Several online publications have been made from different health organizations, the World Health Organization (WHO) spearheading it all. The World Health Organization provides real-time updates on the new information about COVID 19 on their website (World Health Organization, 2021). The online publication of this information ensures the public has ideas of signs, remote management, and they know how to protect themselves from infections. In sum, information is power, and providing it to the public empowers the public.

COVID 19 pandemic has wreaked great havoc in the medical field, especially those caring for high-risk patients. Strides have been made in containing it, yet the world is not out of the woods since new strands of the virus have and could continue to emerge. Evidence-based interventions have been instrumental in caring for the population at risk and the entire population. Alongside other medical organizations, governments have played a leading role in public education about the novel COVID 19, which has helped in its containment.

Demonstrate the importance of capital budgeting decisions and the main steps in evaluating a project feasibility.   Analyze different types of a projects’ cash flows including working capital requirements, after-tax salvage value and the operating cash flows.   Critically evaluate the project appropriateness using different capital budgeting decision rules to make an informed decision. CLO4

FINANCE – FIN 6310Capital Budgeting Analysis (NPV and other rules)ProjectShrieves Casting CompanyShrieves Casting Company is considering adding a new line to its product mix, and the capital budgeting analysis is being conducted by Sidney Johnson and you, recently graduated MBA students. The production line would be set up in unused space in Shrieves’ main plant. The machinery’s invoice price would be approximately €200,000, another $10,000 in shipping charges would be required, and it would cost an additional $30,000 to install the equipment. The machinery has an economic life of 4 years, and Shrieves has obtained a special tax ruling that places the equipment in the MACRS 3-year class. The machinery is expected to have a salvage value of $25,000 after 4 years of use.The new line would generate incremental sales of 1,250 units per year for 4 years at an incremental cost of $100 per unit in the first year, excluding depreciation. Each unit can be sold for $200 in the first year. The sales price and cost are expected to increase by 3% per year due to inflation. Further, to handle the new line, the firm’s net working capital would have to increase by an amount equal to 12% of sales revenues. The firm’s tax rate is 40%, and its overall weighted average cost of capital is 10%. Base on different capital budgeting decision rules decide if the project should be undertaken. To help you structure the task, the CFO – Michael Jones has asked you to answer the following questions.Guidelines:

What is the Shrieves’ depreciable basis? What are the annual depreciation expenses based on MACRS rates?Calculate the annual sales revenues and costs (other than depreciation). Why is it important to include inflation when estimating cash flows?Compute the annual incremental operating cash flow (Net Operating CF) including the depreciation and tax effects.Estimate the required net working capital (the change) for each year, and the cash flow due to investments in net working capital.Calculate the after-tax salvage cash flow of the equipment.Calculate the project’s net cash flows for each year. Based on these cash flows, what are the project’s NPV, IRR, PI, and discounting payback period?Do these indicators suggest the project should be undertaken? What other factors may impact on the capital budgeting decision? With a 3% risk adjustment, should the project be accepted and why?Note: MACRS annual rates are as follows:1 0.33332 0.44453 0.14814 0.0741

She felt dizzy and could not stand up anymore.  However, she forced herself to get on the balance and check her weight for perhaps the tenth time during that day. Her eyes filled with tears as she read ’50.9 KG’ on the screen, and her hatred towards herself increased.   This 17-year old teenager is just one among hundreds of other teenage girls who live around us and are obsessed with their body image.  Many factors such as biological reasons, family and peer pressure cause teenagers to become obsessed with their body image; however, the underlying cause lies in the messages that teenagers have been receiving from media since their childhood.

One cause to body image obsession among teenagers is related to biological factors.  Some teenagers have a disorder called Body Dysmorphic Disorder which is caused by problems in brain chemicals.  Individuals who have this “Imagined Ugliness Syndrome” view a small defect in their appearance as a major one (Veale, n.d.).  Moreover, as explained by Mayo Clinic staff, teenagers who have this disorder view their appearance as so “shameful and distressing that [they] don’t want to be seen by anyone”. (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).  However, not all teenagers have this disorder, and in fact only a small fraction of teenagers who are obsessed with their body image are affected by Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Another factor that causes teenagers to become obsessed with their body image is family related.  Sometimes, parents stress over their child’s body and put pressure on the child to lose weight, which causes the teenager to feel bad about him or herself.  Also, how parents feel about their own body is a major factor that contributes to how teenagers feel about their bodies. In an article by Nikki Weingartner, the author states that “How a parent feels about their own body is often the predominant influential factor that gives rise to how our children feel about their own frame.” (Weingartner, 2009).  Furthermore, growing up in a family where all siblings have ‘perfect’ bodies causes the teenager to feel bad and become obsessed with his or her body image; hence they try to lose weight in ways that might perhaps be abusive and harmful to the teenager’s body and health.  However, nowadays many parents are aware of the fact that stressing over their children’s bodies will lead to undesired effects.  Also, there are many cases where parents feel confident about their bodies, but have children who are obsessed with their body image.  Hence, it can be concluded body image problems of teenagers cannot be entirely blamed on parents.

A third factor that contributes to teenagers’ obsession with their body image is peer pressure.  As children develop into teenagers, the influence of friends increases, and these friends might reinforce wrong attitudes and values concerning body image.  For example, it is common to see many young teenagers judge their peers according to how they look and what they wear. Moreover, a teenager with low self esteem might look up to friends who are perhaps thinner or better looking than him or her, and hence try to be like them, which causes the teenager to become obsessed with his/her own body image.  Also, it is common for teenagers to want to belong to a group and become recognized within their surroundings. Therefore, teenagers might become over concerned with their body image in order to fit in a group by having the ideal looks and body.  Yet, peer pressure is a cause of body image obsession that often affects very young teenagers, because other older more mature teenagers might be immune towards this type of pressure.  Moreover, studies show that people of all ages can become obsessed with their body image, therefore, this cause is a somehow a weak one because it often only affects young teenagers.

All of the factors discussed above which cause obsession with body image among teenagers are important; however, there is a major cause that many individuals are unaware of.  Teenage obsession with body image is directly linked to the messages that teenagers have received during their childhood from the media.  The type of media that is referred to here is not TV fashion shows or magazines with slim models on their covers; instead, it is the type of media that young children are exposed to daily like Disney movies and toy advertisements.  As author Jennifer Oakes expresses it in her article, Disney movies send a message to young girls saying that ‘only skinny is beautiful’.(Oakes, 2006).  Moreover, all Disney heroines like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, and Little Mermaid are extremely thin and pretty, while all bad characters are presented as ugly and overweight.  In her article, Oakes refers to a study that was done to investigate the age at which young girls have a desire for thinness, and surprisingly, the results of the study showed that the approximate age between young girls was six years old which is a very early age for girls to become concerned with thinness and body image.  Also, another source that young girls receive negative messages from regarding body image is some children toys. A good example would be the famous Barbie doll which has the body of an extremely thin woman.  Many young girls who own a Barbie doll feel that they have to own a body similar to Barbie’s.  Jennifer Oakes confirms this fact in her article by saying that “Barbie’s perfect figure and other media driven advertisements make some girls feel unhappy with their bodies” (Oakes, 2006).  Now, the reason behind many teenagers’ obsession with their body image is more obvious.  It is concluded that the messages that young children receive from their surroundings shape their ideas and understanding regarding beauty and body image, and these ideas develop with children as they grow up.

To sum up, although teenage body image obsession is caused by biological factors, family, or peer pressure, a major factor that causes this obsession is the messages that teenagers receive during their early childhood.  Therefore something has to be done in order to reduce the amount of negative messages that young children receive from their surroundings. Movie producers, fashion designers, and dietitians have to stand up together along with the media in order to eliminate the wrong ideas about beauty.  Also, parents should raise awareness between their children concerning beauty standards and body image in order to save the future generation from this serious harmful obsession.

persuasive speech Thesis free college essay help
Description

Persuasive Speech Thesis Submission Purpose: To compose a clear, succinct proposal that asks your audience to make a change/take action Task: The thesis for the persuasive speech will be on the same topic as your informative speech. Your persuasive speech thesis will be a claim of value or a claim of policy. That means you will either: Ask your audience to change a pre-existing belief/judgment/value and embrace a new belief/judgment/value (a claim of value). Ask your audience to take a particular action in order to solve a problem (claim of policy). I have an explanation/examples of each type of thesis below, followed by the thesis submission requirements. Revisit and Revise You drafted as persuasive speech thesis for the Topic + Thesis assignment. That is a good place to start, though most of you will probably want to make some revisions. For a value thesis, you should propose a specific transformation of values. A value thesis should clearly state what you think the status quo is (the current, widespread set of beliefs that many people hold, which you want to change) then propose the new belief that you want people to hold by the time you end your speech. Example: Patriotism is love for a country, not just pride in it Note that here, it is implicit that seeing patriotism as “pride” in one’s country is the more common vision of patriotism. He then proposes a new way to be patriotic: love for a country. For a policy thesis, you will propose a specific future action: You should propose a specific action that will address a harm/problem that you have identified. For example: To help reduce the rising levels of student debt in Washington state, tuition for all public institutions of higher education should be reduced by 15% over the next 5 years. Thesis Submission Instructions Include 3 things in your persuasive speech submission. Please number them in your post. Submit the following to the discussion board: Write out your thesis statement in one, declarative sentence (in other words, your thesis should not be a question). Is your thesis a claim of value or a claim of policy? Explain in what sentence how you know which kind of claim it is. How will your persuasive speech help address the problem you identified in your informative speech?
