Decision Making Concepts in other Countries. ap art history homework help

Moreover, other studies have also realised many distinctive patterns of decision making in different countries. Knörr, Alvarez & Urbano (2013) conducted a study on 12 countries to investigate the cultural difference and their impacts on different firm managers’ decision-making process. The study found out, for instance, that Japanese managers take considerably longer time to make decisions in comparisons to their Canadian and UK counterparts. According to behavioural economic theories of decision making, the more complex and costly the decision is, the longer time it takes to execute. Therefore, it is appropriate for companies operating in the international markets to understand the decision making patterns and practices by different cultures for their smooth operation in specific countries such as Japan.

A Case Study of a Company that Experienced Cross-cultural Risk: Coca-Cola India

Coca-Cola is an American multinational company, and the world’s leading soft drink company established in 1886 and has since established its presence worldwide (Pendergrast, 2013). The Organisational structure of Coca-Cola and its operations in the international market is illustrated in Appendix 2 in the appendix section. Among the examples of companies that have successfully ventured into international markets, Coca Cola stands out. Greer (2018) records that Coca-Cola is the first international soft drink brand to venture into the Indian market. The brand entered the Indian Market in 1970s and became the leading soft drink brand in India till 1977 (Greer, 2018). Due to the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, the brand had to exit from the Indian Market and later return in 1993 (Xu, 2018).

In the return of the brand into the Indian market, the Coca-Cola brand had to face many issues and up now records the best example of a multinational company that has faced both cross-cultural and political risks in a foreign market (Pendergrast, 2013). Among the countries that the brand has expanded into, the Indian market appears unique as it the only market in the world where the brand has faced great challenges and has struggled to attain success.

Water management and pollution: In 2003, the Indian community near a bottling plant for the brand in Kerala, India, carried out a demonstration against the bottling operations that led to water pollution and scarcity (Taneja, Girdhar & Gupta, 2012). Accordingly, these allegations led to the closure of the plant. Consequently, the brand was banned operating in the Indian market by the Indian State for these unethical business activities (Pendergrast, 2013).

Presence of pesticides in soft drinks: Following the incident, Center for Science and Environment (CSE) performed an investigation into 12 major brands of soft drinks in India and a considerable amount of pesticide was recorded in the drinks. Refer to appendix 2 for an illustration. The report by CSE resulted in serious protests by Indians on soft drinks, especially on Coca-Coal and Pepsi brands. These cultural issues within the Indian market significantly affected the operations of Coca-Cola in India, to the extent that the brand was officially banned from operating in Kerala, India.

Recommendations on how to overcome Cultural risks in future

The report has performed an investigation into published literature on cross-cultural risks associated with multinational business operations. The recommendations on cross-cultural risks should, therefore focus on the limitations resulting from such risks.

The company venturing into a foreign market should first conduct extensive research on the culture of the foreign market. A clear understanding of a given market’s culture will ensure that the global business or company will adapt well based in the new market. From the macro-environmental analysis by Taneja, Girdhar & Gupta (2012), the authors argue that Coca-Cola initially failed to successfully operate in the Indian market due to its lack of knowledge of the Indian culture.

Nolder & Riley (2014) argue that successful venture into a foreign market may require an accurate understanding of marketing expertise in the new business environment. Accordingly, it can be recommended that to overcome cross-cultural risks in future, the venturing company needs to assess and understand marketing expertise in the foreign market. Notably, this is well applicable in unique markets such as Japan. Similarly, Greer (2018), relates that Coca-Cola failed in the Indian market as it lacked marketing expertise in the Indian market.

This report aimed to perform a literary investigation into cross-cultural risks and how they impact international business operation. Accordingly, the report has presented a clear definition of culture, risks, risk management and different cross-cultural risks affecting multinational businesses. The results show four broad cross-cultural risks associated that affect international businesses and which the report identifies as; the difference in cultural practices, the difference in negotiation patterns, ethical concerns and decision-making styles. The report concludes that a clear understanding of these risks will ultimately lead to an organisation’s success venturing into new cultures. Similarly, the report has also investigated the operation of Coca-Cola in the Indian market and the associated cross-cultural risks that are mostly ethical concerns.

THE GROWTH OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE WORLD history homework: history homework

With the recent development of both accessible and portable technology forms, the media and screen time have substantially increased, becoming more popular among toddlers and preschoolers. Essentially, screen time involves the amount of time spent on media devices such as television, smartphones, and computer games. Recently, most parents have raised concerns about the effects of the increased longer and younger exposure of the digital screen on children’s developmental process. Additionally, computer games’ dramatic development has increased these devices’ vulnerability to younger children, raising concern about whether it is appropriate for psychological and physical development. As a social worker, I was approached by a parent concerned about the amount of time spent on the smartphone. The parent was interested in the appropriateness of the prolonged screen exposure to the child and how it affects the development process.

As a social worker, my role is to understand child development in both toddler and preschooler ages to identify the formative stages and patterns of development and address the issues that limit this process. Some of these concerns include much time spent on digital screens by a toddler that might cause limited cognitive development. The stage between 1-3 years is referred to as the toddler stage, where the child is advancing after infancy. During this age, child growth is marked by some tremendous intellectual development and some basic toddling. Similarly, at this age, the toddler typically develops cognitive skills such as understanding some actions and language skills and interacting and exploring their environment. Therefore, the parent needs to monitor the toddler’s environment by involving the media environment to enhance development.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), parents should strictly limit their toddlers’ screen time. However, it might be quite tough to completely limit the amount of time spent on digital devices such as smartphones due to social exposure. Considering our case where the toddler is in the digital world and screens are everywhere, the parents must learn some time guidelines to limit the time spent on the screens and ensure productivity. Essentially, toddlers less than 18 months should not be exposed to screen media unless it is productive, for instance, video chatting with family members to enhance social interaction for identity. After 18 months, the toddler can start enjoying limited screen time, which should not exceed one hour a day. The parent should interact with the toddler during the screen time to ensure that the program or the computer game played is age-appropriate and productive.

Similarly, parents should ensure plenty of non-screen time to increase playtime, enhancing creativity, and physical wellbeing. However, too much time screen is not developmentally appropriate. According to the National Institute of Health, spending much time on the screens leads to premature thinning of the cortex responsible for processing sensory information in the brain. Therefore, this imposes a stunt on a toddler’s brain hence negative implication on cognitive development.

On the other hand, the age of 3-5 years is referred to as the preschooler stage. The child displays a developmental milestone and shows some physical or gross motor skills, social, emotional, and intellectual abilities. During this age, the child needs to be physically active since physical activities are essential in emotional, social, and health wellbeing. Similarly, allowing reasonable time spent on the screen can enhance some learning, which promotes active living. Similarly, parental understanding of the correlation between screen time and child development in the preschooler age helps schedule appropriate screen time endorsed for the child. During this age, interactive screen media enhances literacy skills by practicing using letters and word recognition applications in smartphones and tablets. Therefore, a parent may involve in an interactive computer game involving phonics or numbers with the child to enhance learning. Similarly, the parent might use that time to teach some moral lessons to the child. Parents are also recommended to assess select only appropriate applications or games before exposing them since most of them might claim to be educative but eventually cause harm to the child.

However, exposing the child to excessive screen time is not developmentally appropriate. In this case, too much time spent on the screen leads to inactive living; hence is associated with some physical problems, including poor cardiorespiratory and obesity. Also, non-educative programs and computer games might yield some irregular behaviors leading to lower cognitive development and emotional problems.

In conclusion, monitoring the recent trends in technology and children’s exposure to digital screens is appropriate. Therefore, for both ages, parents should limit the time spent on the screen to enhance their children’s physical and cognitive development.
