Introduction

Aileen Wuornos was born in 1956 in Rochester, Michigan. She grew up in the state’s foster-care system after her mother was arrested for child abuse and her father committed suicide. Her upbringing could not have been easy (Cresswell, 2021). The New York Times reported that she gave birth to a son at 14, who died due to complications from his premature birth. Wuornos’ life would continue on a downward spiral from there; she began working as a prostitute to afford it. Things didn’t improve from there. By 1986, she had moved to Florida and found a girlfriend, Tyria Moore, who was believed to be a victim of Wuornos for many years until she admitted that she’d been an accomplice in the killings (Booth, 2021).

Background

The first two victims, Peter Siems and Charles Carskaddon were never found (Blanco, 2020). Tiger tail investigators had a theory on why: Wuornos said she had given the men’s wallets to her friend Dawn for safekeeping, and Dawn said she had thrown them out. The officers believed that Dawn knew more than she was saying and that there might be physical evidence in her trailer.

Aileen Wuornos is a true-crime icon. The serial killer was convicted of murdering seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990, and after spending over a decade on death row, she was executed by lethal injection in 2002.

Trial

In a professional tone: Wuornos was eventually arrested in January of 1991 in Florida. She would give several confessions and then recant them at different times. She claimed that she had killed all seven men in self-defense (Christian, 2018). She told her first story to Troy Burress, the officer who arrested her. He said that she said to him that she had shot a man named Peter Siems because he raped her, stole her car, and assaulted her. These claims would later be proven false by several witnesses and by the lack of blood found in the vehicle.

After being arrested, Wuornos confessed to six murders and recanted, confessing to the seventh (Bremmers, 2020). In her confession, she said she shot each victim because they had tried to rape her. She also noted that none of them was robbed, and one was shot with his gun after he grabbed it out of his glove compartment. The only way to prove these statements false would be to find evidence against Wuornos from each crime scene. After a nationally televised trial, she was sentenced to death by lethal injection and became one of the first women in the country to be executed for murder.

Aileen Wuornos was no stranger to misfortune. Wuornos’ life was characterized by loss and abuse, beginning with her mother abandoning her at birth (Tan et al., 2020). Wuornos was married at the age of 14 to an older man whom she claimed had raped her; he soon left her after learning that she was pregnant. Wuornos took odd jobs and lived in her car until the stress caused her to miscarry. This point marked the beginning of a downward spiral into street prostitution and petty crime, culminating in a murder spree that would earn her the title of “America’s first female serial killer.”

It is clear how Wuornos’ life story could have been used to illustrate the nature-vs.-a nurture debate, but it’s a much more complex issue than it appeared. For example, many people would attribute Wuornos’ criminality to the fact that her mother abandoned her. Still, many children are raised without their biological mothers, who never resort to crime or violence. The critical component seems to be the presence of an alternative parental figure. In this case, it is a grandmother who did not provide a stable or loving home for Wuornos; who instead abused and neglected her granddaughter

Political implications for membership in the European union required democracy and market economies thus providing motivation for states previously ruled under Communism to transition into these requirements. Economic implications of globalization meant to increase in share and wealth of the consumer market and opened up a vast diversity of international trade with the free movement of goods, labor, and money. With Western Germany thriving in capitalism, Eastern Germany struggled to give their pre-war socialist structure as Communism drew back causing east and west to struggle in unification. Divisions in Europe also can be seen in the divide between the European youth culture and older European demographics as the youth culture rapidly adopted popular western values and abandoned traditional values embraced by these older generations. Cold War tensions proved to be a strain on economies and produced the spread of distrust throughout Europe (Shubert & Goldstein, 2012). However, the end of the Cold War created a European environment where boundaries and limitations were lifted, particularly for immigration.
There were also ethnic and religious divides in many countries as well. As immigration increased dramatically in the 1990s, people from poor, turmoil-stricken countries sought asylum in Europe. Immigration emphasized religious and ethnic divides, with Muslim immigrants being a particularly large group into Europe with 29.6 million in 1990 increasing to 44.1 million by 2010. In some countries, for example the Netherlands, little attempt was been made to integrate immigrants in a nations societal fold leaving immigrants to feel a sense of estrangement in these countries (Shubert & Goldstein, 2012).
Nationalism was of big debate in Europe in the last decade. With the European Union being the preferred unification, questions of identity focused on whether to place importance on being a member of the European community versus identifying with the alignments and nationalism of the restored individual state (Shubert & Goldstein, 2012). The call for individualized nationalism produced a spawning of political parties that targeted preservation of a national identity and excluded immigrants from outside countries (Shubert & Goldstein, 2012, Ch 7.4 Society and Culture, para. 15). Globalization of Europe allowed the welfare states to disappear, money to be distributed differently and both states and people began to have trouble surviving. Many people began to suffer from welfare programs to help them in place. They suffered from higher unemployment rates, life expectancy dropped, birth rates declined, and mortality rates began to increase (Shubert and Goldstein 2012). Things continued to decline in the economical and political venues across Europe as well. Inflation was occurring, there was price gouging where there once had been stable prices, and wages for the individual dropped (Shubert and Goldstein 2012). Communist Parties began to form again in Poland and Lithuania states because economies had gotten so bad for them, they need to find a way to stabilize themselves. The only way the states could do this was with the old way of communism because the E.U. and West Europe refused to aid them in recovery (Shubert and Goldstein 2012).
Technology had advanced greatly since the first world war, giving us cell phones, laptops, highspeed internet, phone lines around the world, the more modern the technology the easier it has become to attack one enemys from afar. During the globalization of Europe, bombs were used that did not require anyone to stand near them to detonate, they were set up and the person left, keeping them safe and killing or injuring hundreds. This happened several times in Europe with the terrorist attacks.
In the 2000s the average European became highly aware and frightened of terrorist attacks because they witnessed the attacks on the United States. From witnessing the United States’ distress they then suffered many attacks themselves from the same group of people causing more fear and more reason to distrust those who were Muslim. Once this happened they began to outcast all Muslims, finding ways to ban them from areas, ban their headdress, burn their books, and over ostracize them (Shubert and Goldstein 2012). Those who had fled their countries had hoped to find a new home where fear was no longer present and they could start over fresh instead they met resistance.
I do not know what causes an individual to become a terrorist. I imagine it is that they love their country as we do ours. For what we see as terrorism they see as freedom fighting, fighting for a cause, standing up for what they believe is right and fair in the world. I believe that is what role nationalism plays in this. All of the Muslims who left their homes and received unjust treatment, where fighting back. They had targets backs and as the saying goes, if you’re being accused of something you may as well. Perhaps that too is how they felt. They took a stand and fought for their beliefs, that they brought with them from their homes.

Examples of ‘routine governmental action’ include processing visas, providing police protection or mail service, and supplying utilities like phone service, power, and water. Routine governmental action does not include a decision to award new business or to continue business with a particular party. Nor does it include acts that are within an official’s discretion or that would constitute misuse of an official’s office. Thus, paying an official a small amount to have the power turned on at a factory might be a facilitating payment; paying an inspector to ignore the fact that the company does not have a valid permit to operate the factory would not be a facilitating payment.” Defining facilitation payments leaves a lot of gray area, so global managers should always err on the side of caution, keeping in mind the intended narrow construal of this defense.
Finally, the FCPA generally limits both civil and criminal violations of the bribery prohibitions by a five-year statute of limitations. In other words, in most cases, proceedings seeking civil penalties or criminal sanctions for violating the bribery provisions of the FCPA cannot be initiated more than five years after the act occurred. Other male prevalent jobs are construction, extraction and maintenance at 27.6%. Female job occupations include management and professional at 28.5% with an additional 40.5% in sales and office work as well as 17.6% in service occupations.

The physical environment of the town shows a thriving community overall with some areas that are blighted (but not a lot). Most of the homes are well-kept, and the construction of the homes trends towards siding with some brick. The lawns (for the most part) are well-maintained, neat and tidy. Such care displays a sense of community and pride. There are relatively few abandoned vehicles that were observed, and no piles of trash, although there were some yards that were overgrown and unkempt in the poorer areas of the town. The window survey found two public parks, both with walking areas, playgrounds, tables and other amenities for the public. The parks also sport a number of baseball diamonds and soccer pitches, as well as bike trails and a swimming pool.

The town’s boundaries are twofold; both manmade and natural. The natural boundaries of the town are the east and west forks of the White Lick Creek that provide water for the town. Samuel Moore originally established the town between those forks due to the proximity and value of the water that not only could provide for the town’s drinking and other needs, but could also power the mills that he imagined there. White Lick Creek seems to be relatively clean and continues to provide a source of energy today. The other boundaries are manmade and consists of a major highway and the railroad that divides the town. Both north and south of the State Road 67 boasts housing but the more affluent and spacious homes are south of the road, while north of the State Road boasts lots that are much more crowded and run-down. There are also several public housing areas.

Economically speaking, the town seems to be a bedroom community to Indianapolis and as a bedroom community is more affluent than not. Overall the town takes pride in its appearance and most of the homes and businesses there are well maintained. Mooresville could best be described as a thriving community with pockets of low-income housing, although not described as ghetto. The town does contain a couple of public housing areas with the usual problems associated with public housing, but even these are not so rundown as would constitute complete anarchy.

There are limited areas of shopping in Mooresville, but the town does have a Mall and two large chain grocery stores. The grocery stores are full-service and it does appear that they accept all forms of payment including foodstamps. There are a variety of business opportunities as well as a small manufacturing base.

Indianapolis, with its major metropolitan area and business opportunities is only a short 25 minute drive from Mooresville for those residents that are unable to find a job in town. The unemployment rate is relatively low and stable.

As stated before there are plenty of schools and churches of several denominations. The schools all look to be in fairly good shape and the one library that was discovered by the window survey had plenty of cars in the parking lot and looked to be used and useful.

The social question that could be asked is if this town was a healthy community. Based upon the fact that there are plenty of customers for the hospital and surrounding doctor’s offices, one might believe that the health of the individuals in the community is of great importance to the town’s citizens. Of course, another way to look at it is that the citizens utilize the health care facilities at a greater rate because they are unhealthy. The local hospital does offer a number of conveniences such as classes on eating health and healthy living, as well as courses on such illnesses as hypertension and diabetes. Local health care services also offer chiropractic offices, a massage therapist and even an acupuncturist is available. However, there does not seem to be much in the way of vitamin or herbal shops in the area. The window survey and the subsequent research lends a feeling that that Mooresville’s attitude towards healthcare is ‘fair’.

My impression of Mooresville is that it is a clean and safe place to live. Overall the community seems to be a friendly one with housing that is well-kept and cared for. It seemed like a family-oriented community with a healthy environment.

The town’s demographics includes a 2011 population of 22,608 with an urban population of 14,909 and a rural population of 7,699.

Males and females were relatively equal in the community with males comprising 50.8% and females comprising 49.2% of the total population.
